Chapter 4
If it was America, England, Australia, probably anywhere in the world they would strongly suggest that you see a psychiatrist after trauma like the one Leah experienced that day. But now, this was Africa and someone with that qualification was not even remotely close.
Leah had to find some way to work it out for herself.
That was probably why she found herself back in the place where the lions were mating since yesterday. You may call it a sort of a ground hog day. Or you may call it sheer stupidity. But there she was. Something in her subconscious mind was trying to warn her to take a very good look around her, before she got out of the Suzuki.
She saw nothing at first and thought she was safe. And while she lost her cell phone somewhere in this area, she might also look around to see if she can find it.
And there they were again. King Lion and his queen of the moment. Queenie was teasing him with the flick of her tale. Exposed herself shamelessly in front of his yellow eyes. He fell to the ground and covered his face with one of his huge paws. Everything about him screamed out, please, no not that again. Can’t you see I am bored with the situation. Bored with you.
Even a great lion like him sometimes look at greener grass from times to times. Only by way of expression, Leah thought. As lions probably never look at grass in that way at all. But what was a human being like Leah now doing on his grass? Kicking and walking through it while looking for her cellphone.
Or was it for trouble?
Which was always on the lurk in Africa. She found it. A stick the size of a telephone pole suddenly got stuck in the ball of her left foot. It must have been Doctor Sergio Martinez's curse. He dryly referred to the little wooden thing that she landed in as a telephone pole. Karma. Never joke about anything that bad. She would remind him of that curse when he later comes to save her again from the danger in which she now was.
He would come. She was honestly hoping for that, as mister Lion suddenly took his foot away from his eyes and sit straight up. He couldn’t miss her. There she was again. The annoying human upright character from yesterday.
Leah new he was going to storm. They both were on the other side of her Suzuki Jeep. How the heck was she going to get on the roof? And what about a tree.
“Lions are better climbers than humans.” Leah could almost hear her grandfathers voice in her ears. He was always a teacher. Totally in tell with nature. He was magic.
She hesitated. Could probably still get into the little Jeep and close the door, but no. Leah’s feet was stuck to that huge telephone pole.
Two ticks and the lion was on top of her. Funny that she did not perish the moment he landed on her. A fully grown male lion could weigh way over two hundred kilogrammes. It was over. She was probably history from that moment onwards as everything went black.
But just for a while. When she woke up, the lion was still on top of her. She could smell him. Like the smell of a wet domestic cat. This was the very first time she was that close to a male lion. She rose an arm, trying to protect her throat. That part of her body a lion usually zoom into, to make his final kill. But he didn’t kill her at that moment. For some reason his eyes was not filled with anger and hate anymore. It was filled with something else. What she saw there was something like … want.
The male lion wanted to mate with her.
His body started to move. His spear was seeking for a hole where it could sink in and where he could release what was building up in his body for the survival of his species. What he had was huge…
Leah tried to move away. But that made him snarl. He looked down at her and bared his teeth. She wanted to vomit from the smell that came from his mouth. Something big and wet was now under her T-shirt. If only she could grab it with her hands, help to release him before he used it on her. In her!
But that was not good enough. He knew what he wanted. He wanted her. He wanted to loose himself inside of her, and that was the only thing that could satisfy that urgent need of his.
It was a decision of life and death. Although for a moment she felt that death was the more dignifying way to get out of a situation like this.
Leah slowly parted her legs. There was no way to lower the short that she was wearing. He was going to do what he was going to do through her cloth. Finally she could get hold of his largeness. Although it usually look small when you see two lions mating, she new what she held in her hand was much more than she ever received in there.
At last she pleaded, even though she new that he would not understand a word she was saying. “Please whatever you do, just do it slow. Be gentle and I won’t resist. It was a long time since I had anybody in me.”
The bed light next to Leah klicked on. It was Sergio and he was trying to release the grip of her hands she had on some poor innocent animal. A poor thing that was outside when it starder raining a little earlier.
“Please, just let go of my cat. You are going to choke her to death. She only wants to welcome you. Keep you warm and sleep with you…” he picked up the liitle African wild cat and cuddled it to his body.
“Yea, that’s what the lion also said. Just not in that many words.” It was out there before she could get a hold on her silly mouth. “Then he was trying to rape me.”
“Oh goodness me. No no, not little Gato. Gato will never do anything like that without your consent. And Gato, by the way is a she, not a he. And why did you go outside? It is raining, or haven't you notice again?”
The cat was totally bewildered and slippery because of her wet coat and Sergio had no choice but to let her go.
Then he touched Leah forehead with the back of his hand asked very sympathetic. “Are you okay. Do you have trouble to sleep?”
“I rather not sleep anymore. I had a very bad dream. But you can go back to your bed now…”
“I can go and make you a mug of hot chocolate. I am also wide awake now.”
“No thank you, it is okay. I’ll page through that magazine for a while. Hopefully I did not wake up anyone else.”
“Oh but you did!” a voice from the door. A voice from hell. “How are you Leah? Your dad told me that you had a little accident yesterday.”
Ralph Jameson, her ex husband. The last person she was expecting to see there. The last person she ever wanted to see again.
“I am much better, thank you.” Why was she all of a sudden worried about the way her hair looked. About the fact that she was not wearing any lipstick. “What are you doing here Ralph? When did you arrive?”
“Early last night. With my own plane. I always promised your dad I will come back and finish what I started here. I finally made my fortune Leah, and now I am back to claim my share in Hurter’s Retreat again.”
She could only stare at him.
She was now wide awake, yet living in a nightmare.
Chapter 76Things are moving in the right direction. Leah packs the last of her tea sets in the kiln. Three teapots and eighteen mugs. The curator wants two for the exhibition in the next month. Mad hatters but not Alice in wonderland was the assignment under which the artists are instructed to work. Leah always makes more, you never know when something gets out of a kiln flawed. That is pottery for you. Before Sergio and she leaves for Inhambane, she’s got to create three more works with a kaleidoscope theme for another exhibition.Leah loves working for the galleries. Their assignments make her think. Let her creative juices flow. She also started a brand-new Facebook page. Leah’s mud creations and curios. There are no followers on there yet and she’s got only a few friends on her own Facebook profile. But it is okay. She considers it as a storage page, where she can keep track of what she is doing. Maybe also to refer potential clients to, if they want to see what she I
Chapter 75There are two of them. And it's been going on for months. Pale yellow, like the grass in which they hide, they watch the village in front of them with intent. By now, the lions know that the prey they are looking for lives in branch structures and plastered with mud. The roofs are made of a thin layer of mulch. The doors often consist of twigs and brances, flanged together with ropes in a frame. At dusk, the people begin to make fires. A deterrent to many of the large predators. Don’t go there. But here, no more. On the contrary. It's sign to get closer. If someone doesn't come out soon enough to throw more logs on the fire, the lions will start scratching at the doors. Or stand up against it. The doors usually break out of the frames and the big animals walk in and simply harvest a meal. Drag it out without hesitation and go feasting on it in the grass nearby. When the door is strong enough to remain standing, the lions step back and jump onto the roof of the rickety struc
Chapter 74Leah wakes up when Sergio kisses her on the cheek and then puts a mug of coffee on the table next to her. She fell asleep, with her head on her arms, where she was working on her mad hatters’ project.“Drink your coffee, and get in bed. You will fall from your chair, and I don’t want to discover you on the floor ever again.”She takes a sip from the mug and then smiles at him. “Oh gosh, yes. Last month this time. It worked Sergio. Thank you for insisting to take me to see Silvi and doc Klitz.”For a moment Sergio’s heart stops. “You mean… you mean it started…”“Yes, and guess what Serg? Almost no pain.”“Oh no…” he is so disappointed. Not about the no pain. No, there was just that one moment when he hoped that one of the little lives that was swimming in his lower body would join with that little egg in her body, creating a little him… or her.“Sorry Sergio?” She's clearly having trouble believing her ears.“Oh no Leah. That is not what I meant. I was hoping that after the
Chapter 73Sunday evening and Sergio is checking his cell phone, wall calendar and white board. His to do and to remember lists are on there. The date of Leah’s surgery is also written on there. That was three weeks ago. Her check up is in two weeks. But they are not going to drive the distance to Inhambane. No, he booked them a charter in Aleit’s small plane. They don’t really need a vehicle in Inhambane with family there. His dad’s beach buggy is always at his disposal. Or the Nissan pick-up. As long as you don’t touch the old man’s Prado. Now Sergio is counting back from the date he picked Leah up from the floor in her apartment. Twenty-five days. Which means her period has to start this week.He draws a red dot on Wednesday. Oh, may goodness that means she is in PMS at the moment. He’s got to be real careful what he says to her, and how he says it. He gives her a sideways glance and his eyes goes to Gato.It also means by the following weekend his cat will be pregnant for a month.
Chapter 72“Hey baby Angel!” How good to hear Sergio’s voice on Thursday. “Coming home tomorrow. I can’t wait to see you. How’s things going there on Hurter’s Retreat and in the Gonzales Camp.”“Hectic amazing Lionman! I don’t even know where to start telling you everything. Just get yourself here and see for yourself.”Yesterday Aleit landed on the landing strip in front of the hangers here on Hurter’s Retreat to drop Pierre and their stuff off. This morning, he left again to pick up four French tourists in the Congo. And he made a booking here at Hurter’s Retreat for tonight. And Maria is so happy to have Pierre here, to help her with a fancy dinner for tonight. To have Pierre and Aleit on board can only have a positive outcome for Leah’s future plans. After Aleit left, Leah and Pierre go through her grandmother’s stuff in the one store room. And Pierre assures her that there are more than enough utensils for him to use in the new kitchen as well. He does not need fancy stuff to mak
Chapter 71Monday at the hospital and sanctuary, Sergio’s got one thing in his head. Actually, that thing is a person and she’s got a name.Leah…He never thought that a women can be your best friend and the girlfriend of your dreams at the same time. Then he realises. This is how it feels to be madly in love with someone.Sergio walks over to the wall calendar to see what the rest of his week looks like. Tomorrow is the day when he and a few of the volunteers are going to some of the small towns to do clinics there. Sterilise some of the stray cats and dogs. Check for rabies and just attend to the farm animals. Make sure that all the animals are treated okay by their owners. For their field excursions they have a Tata bus, with a small examination table, operation theatre and a laboratory at their disposal. Basic. Primitive. But somehow it works for what they’ve got to do.Sergio will leave early today in order to go and pack. They will sleep three nights in tents in the veld. There
