MasukRosa's POV
I kept my face calm throughout the ride, but inside, nothing was calm. My mind was spiralling with everything I had discovered today. I tried to talk to him despite that. Even asked l questions like everything was fine. I nodded at the right moments. I even forced a small laugh once or twice, but none of it reached my mind. My thoughts refused to settle. They kept circling the same truth over and over again. Charles was hiding something. And whatever it was, it was something about me. The phone sat inside my bag. It was switched off for now. I waited for the right moment when I would switch it on again. I told myself I would wait until he dropped me at the hotel and left. I would have the whole night to go through everything properly and I was certain that I would find something there. We stepped into the reception of a large , exquisite hotel, and I stood aside as Charles spoke to the receptionist, requesting a full suite. That pulled my attention immediately. “A suite?” I asked, turning to him. “Why a suite? A normal room is fine for me.” He looked at me, then reached for my hand, his expression softening in a way that almost made me hate myself for doubting him. “I’m not leaving you alone,” he said. My heart tightened at the revelation. “I’ll be staying with you,” he continued gently. “I can’t leave you by yourself in this condition. You can’t remember anything and your blood pressure is unstable. What if something happens?” His thumb brushed lightly over my hand as he spoke. “I need to be here with you,” he added. “I need to monitor you.” I nodded slowly, even though everything in me resisted the idea. I did not want him there. But I could not say that. He would immediately know that I was up to something. So I agreed. We were led upstairs after he paid, and the moment we entered the suite, I felt the weight of my secret trying to force themselves out of my mouth. I wanted to turn to him and demand answers. I wanted to ask him what he was hiding, why nothing made sense anymore, and why every piece of information I got contradicted the next. But I held myself back because I was beginning to figure out that he was a pretty good liar. If I could find just one person who would tell me the truth, I would leave immediately and I would find another doctor who would explain what was really happening to me, because at this point, I did not even trust the diagnosis I had been given. I was still lost in those thoughts when Charles sat beside me. He took my hand again, his voice softer now. “I love you,” he said, lifting my hand to kiss it. “We’re a family. You, me, and our baby.” I looked at him and forced a small smile. He searched my face as he spoke, like he was trying to read something I was not showing. “I know this is hard for you,” he continued. “The memory loss…the confusion. But I’m your husband, Rosa. Everything you need to believe that is there. The certificate, the pictures—you don’t have to doubt me.” His eyes held mine, still searching. “Are you hiding anything from me?” he asked quietly. “Are you starting to remember something?” For a second, I almost said it. I almost told him about the phone because I was tired of the lies and the fact that I felt like a fool. But I held myself back. “No,” I said instead. “Everything is still… unclear. That’s why I get anxious sometimes. It’s difficult not knowing who you are.” He squeezed my hand gently. “I understand,” he said. “And I’ll stay with you through it. Until everything comes back.” I nodded. But inside, nothing felt settled. Later that evening, food was brought in. We ate quietly, the kind of silence that felt heavier than conversation. I could feel him watching me sometimes, studying me, but I avoided his gaze. I was trying to hatch a plan. Maybe while he slept, I could sneak into the toilet and go through the phone. If I found out anything that suggested another lie, I would be gone by morning, memory or not. When we were done, he brought out tea. “The doctor recommended this,” he said. “It will help you relax since you're always anxious. It will help you sleep well too.” I stared at the cup for a moment. I didn't want to take it. But if I didn't, he would suspect something was wrong. I didn't want that, so I took it and drank the tea, hoping I would be able to wake up at night. Not long after, exhaustion pulled me under. I barely remembered lying down or remembered him beside me. I only faintly heard his voice. “Good night,” he said softly. “See you on the other side.” Then everything went dark. *** When I opened my eyes, nothing made sense. I was lying on a bed, staring up at a ceiling that felt unfamiliar. The light was too bright, forcing me to squint as I raised my hand to shield my eyes. For a moment, I did not know where I was. Or who I was. I blinked slowly, trying to adjust, trying to make sense of the room. Then I noticed him. A man, standing not too far from me. I frowned immediately as I couldn't remember who he was, no matter how hard I tried. “Who are you?” I asked, my voice weak but clear enough to make him turn around. “I don’t remember anything. Who are you?” He stepped closer, calm, composed, almost relieved. “I’m Charles,” he said gently. “Your husband. Thank God you're awake, baby.” The word settled in my head, but it didn't hit any memory. “You have temporary memory loss,” he continued. “It’s because of your pregnancy. The doctor said you’ll recover soon.” He reached for my hand, holding it carefully, like I was something fragile. I watched him, uncertain. “If you’re Charles,” I said slowly, “then what’s my name?” A small smile formed on his lips. “Your name is Rosa,” he replied. “You’re my wife, and we’re expecting a baby together.” I looked around the room again, trying to understand anything. “Where are we?” I asked. “This is a hotel,” he said. “We came here for a short stay in Jersey City.” “And where do we live?” I pressed. He did not hesitate to answer. “We’re heading home,” he said. “To Pennsylvania. That’s where our family house is.”Rosa's POV The drive back to Manhattan felt strangely unreal. I sat quietly in the backseat of the car, staring out the window as the city slowly came into view. I could not decide whether my heart felt heavy or light. Everything that had happened over the past few weeks, and especially over the past few days, felt like a blur stitched together by pain, fear, loss, and miracles. It felt impossible that I was still here.It felt impossible that life had continued after everything that had happened.A warm hand suddenly squeezed mine. I turned my head and found Alex watching me. A smile immediately tugged at my lips."You're thinking too much again," he said softly.I laughed under my breath. "Can you blame me?"His fingers tightened around mine. "Are you worried about going back?"I knew exactly what he meant. I looked down at our joined hands before nodding."A little."His expression softened."Because of my father?""Because of everything," I admitted. "It feels like I'm returning
Rosa's POV "Charlie, what the hell have you done?!"I heard Taylor's scream as though it were coming from the far end of a tunnel. Nothing around me felt real anymore. All I could see was Alex. The man I loved had just been shot..One moment he had been standing there trying to protect me, and the next he was collapsing to the floor, blood spreading beneath him.My entire world narrowed to that single horrifying sight. And I abandoned everything and ran towards him. Behind me, I vaguely heard Charles shouting my name. I heard him threatening me, telling me to stop. But the words never fully registered.I dropped beside Alex and grabbed his face with trembling hands."Alex."My voice shattered."Alex, look at me." Tears blurred my vision. "Why would you do that? Why would you let yourself get shot?"His eyelids fluttered. Slowly, he lifted a hand and brushed my cheek. The touch was weak. And a faint smile appeared on his face."Rosa."His voice was barely audible. His thumb brushed awa
Alex's POV The moment my car turned into the ranch compound, a gunshot shattered the air.My heart stopped, and for one terrifying second, I could not breathe. The only thought in my head was Rosa. She was in that ranch.I threw the car door open before I could form a complete thought, and sprinted toward the ranch. Every horrible possibility flashed through my mind. I had spent weeks searching for her—weeks chasing dead ends, wondering if she was alive, hurt, or trapped somewhere with Charles.I had finally found her. I could not lose her now. I burst toward one of the large windows and froze.Nobody had been shot. But Charles stood in the middle of the room holding a gun. Smoke still curled from the barrel.Rosa was standing several feet away, trembling. Beside her stood Taylor. The moment my eyes landed on Rosa, everything else faded. Relief crashed into me so hard that my knees almost gave way. She was here, alive, and standing right in front of me.For weeks, I had imagined thi
Rosa's POV "Your time is up, Taylor."Finally, I felt something close to satisfaction.Taylor's hand trembled around the gun, enough for me to notice. After everything she had done, after every lie, and every betrayal, she was scared. She should be.I folded my arms across my chest and smiled. "And now I'll tell you where I went when I left the ranch."Taylor stared at me. I could practically see the calculations racing through her mind."I went to the police station."The color drained from her face and she knew she was in trouble. "The police know everything," I continued. "And most importantly, Alex is probably the one arriving right now."For a brief second, panic flashed across her features. I almost laughed. This was the woman who had spent years pretending to be smarter than everyone around her. Now she looked cornered, and she looked exactly like what she was.A criminal and a coward. She tightened her grip on the gun and swallowed hard.I sat down now and leaned back in my c
Rosa's POV Taylor used the gun to point at a chair across the room. "Sit."I quietly moved toward the chair and lowered myself into it.A laugh escaped her lips. "Who would have thought?" she said mockingly. "All this time, you could have been obedient. Maybe I should have carried a gun around from the beginning."She twirled the weapon lazily. "Turns out this is the only thing you respect."I ignored her. Inside, I was praying that Alex would arrive before everything spiraled completely out of control.Taylor returned her attention to her phone. Her fingers moved rapidly across the screen as though she was checking messages or tracking something. I had no idea what she was doing. What I did know was that I needed to keep her talking. I needed to buy time."How did Charles do it?" I asked. She barely looked up. "Do what?""The search results. How did he manipulate everything I saw?"Taylor finally raised her head and laughed. "You of all people should know the answer to that. You're
Rosa's POV The moment I stepped into the ranch house, I became madder. The timid, soft-spoken girl who claimed she was pregnant and stranded no longer existed. That was only a role Taylor picked to deceive me.Taylor sat comfortably in the living room as though the place belonged to her. She looked up when I entered, and a bright smile spread across her face. She was still acting because she didn't know I had gotten my memories back. For a moment, I almost admired her dedication.I sat down across from her and folded my hands in my lap. Since she wanted to play a game, I could play one too.My gaze drifted to her stomach. "You never told me how far along you are."Taylor blinked. For a fraction of a second, I could see that she was thinking hard about what I said before the smile returned."What?""Your pregnancy," I said lightly. "How many months now?"Her hand immediately moved to her stomach. "About five months."I nodded slowly. "Really?""Of course."I tilted my head. "Are you s
Rosa’s POVI was in the office, still hung up on the call I had made last night. Everything about that call screamed suspicion. The woman on the line had known my name and she recognized my voice because I hadn’t used my phone. And she had been unnecessarily rude and defensive. My guts hadn’t bee
Rosa’s POVI spent the entire afternoon preparing. Every detail was important. And when Alex walked in, I could see the way his eyes darkened and the satisfied smug playing at the corner of his lips as he took in the setting. And me. My heart was racing, not from fear, but anticipation. “You’ve ou
