The first time Celine Wolfe saw Adrian Kane up close, the storm outside the Manhattan ballroom raged like it had a personal problem against the city.

Rain lashed against the towering windows. thunder rumbling low and distant, as if echoing the power and deceit swirling within the ballroom.

Inside, the crème de la crème of New York society moved through the space like predators in silk and tailored wool, laughing too loudly, sipping champagne from crystal cups, their faces masks of gentleness that hid the monsters beneath.

Chandeliers dripped with light, casting fractilms of rainbows across marble floors, while string quartets played softly in the background.

Celine was not one of them. Not anymore.

She moved among the guests in the crisp black and white uniform of the service staff, a silver tray balanced carefully on her palm, refilling glasses with the precision of someone who had spent weeks practicing this exact role.

No one looked twice at her. That was the point. For the past ten years, she had been a ghost erased from the glittering world her family once inhabited, surviving on scraps of memory and a burning resolve that never dimmed.

Tonight, she had slipped into this elite charity gala through forged credentials and a network of favors. The event was hosted in one of Adrian Kane's properties, a fortress of old money and sins.

She was here to observe, to listen, and eventually, to strike at the heart of the man who had played a part in her family's ruin.

Her father, Sebastian Wolfe, had once been a famous man in real estate and finance, a man whose name commanded respect in these very circles.

But ten years ago, everything shattered. Adrian's father, Victor Kane, had seen to that destroying their empire with forged documents, whispered scandals, and debts that swallowed them whole.

Blood had been spilled in the process, or so the shadows also whispered.

Her mother had withered away under the weight of it all, her father left broken and forgotten in a cold grave. And Adrian? He had been there, complicit or at least complicit by blood, rising from the ashes of their downfall to claim even greater power.

Celine's grip tightened on the tray as she wove through the crowd, her heart a steady calculated anger.

She wasn't here to serve drinks forever. This was revenge. A step into the lion's den. She had spent months mapping the layout, studying guest lists, and perfecting her disguise.

The hairpin tucked into her updo wasn't just for show, it was a tool, one of many she had stole in dingy back rooms and abandoned warehouses.

Revenge wasn't impulsive; it was a slow, a deliberate art.

She paused near a marble pillar, scanning the room under the disguise of adjusting a napkin.

That's when she felt it, a presence behind her, heavy and commanding, like a shift in air before a storm breaks in.

"Careful there," a low deep voice murmured, close enough that the warmth of his breath brushed the nape of her neck.

"You look like you want to kill everyone in this room."

Celine's pulse spiked, but she didn't drop the tray. Instead, she turned slowly, deliberately, forcing her expression into one of polite neutrality. And there he was.

Adrian Kane.

He stood inches away, towering over her in a black suit that brought out the sharp lines of his shoulders and the sharp set of his jaw. His dark hair was perfectly styled, a few strands falling across his forehead, and his eyes piercing gray, like storm clouds trapping lightning locked onto hers with an intensity that made the air between them thicken.

Up close, he was devastatingly beautiful, sharp cheekbones, a mouth that looked like it had never smiled without a reason, and an aura of danger that radiated from him. He held a glass of whiskey loosely in one hand, the amber liquid catching the light as he regarded her.

For a fleeting second, the ballroom faded. Celine's mind hurtled back ten years, to the night everything changed.

---

She had been just fourteen then, wide eyed and sheltered in her family's Upper East Side penthouse.

The Kanes had come for dinner under the pretense of alliance, Victor Kane with his wicked smirk and veiled threats, Adrian at his side, already carrying himself like the heir apparent he was.

Celine had watched from the staircase as her father argued in hushed tones, papers scattered across the mahogany table they sat at.

Accusations flew, embezzlement, betrayal, threats wrapped in sweet voices. Victor had laughed, a sound like breaking glass, and by morning, the Wolfe empire was crumbling. Investigators swarmed. Assets froze.

Her father's desperate calls went unanswered, and soon, the whispers began suicide, scandal, weakness.

Adrian had stood by his father's side through it all, his face empty with no emotion, untouched by the wreckage. He hadn't even glanced at her that night, a mere shadow in the hallway.

But she had memorized him: the way he commanded space without effort, the cold calculation in his gaze. He was the devil's son, and tonight, in this ballroom, he still wore the crown.

---

Celine blinked, pulling herself back to the present. Ten years of planning, of scraping, of fueling her hatred with every sleepless night.

And here he was, the man who had ruined her, standing so close she could smell the faint trace of his cologne leather, sandalwood, and something darker, like smoke and sin.

He didn't recognize her. Of course he didn't. Celine Wolfe had died that night along with her old life; she had become a nobody, a waitress, a ghost. "Celine Voss" was the name on her forged ID tonight, a careful fabrication.

She said nothing at first, simply offering a sweet, practiced smile as she met his eyes. Inside, she imagined his empire fracturing, his world reduced to the same ashes he had left hers in. Her blood sang with it.

"Most people avoid eye contact with me," Adrian continued, one eyebrow arching slightly as he sized her up. His voice sound like velvet over steel, unhurried, as if he had all the time in the world to assess her.

His gaze traveled slowly from the modest collar of her uniform to the curve of her neck, down to the tray in her hands before returning to her face. "You're quite different."

Celine shrugged lightly, careful to keep her movements fluid, non threatening. "Well, maybe they know something I don't."

Her eyes stayed locked on his, willing the hatred to stay buried beneath the surface. She couldn't let it burn through.

Not yet.

He took a slow sip of his whiskey, the ice clinking softly against the glass. The storm outside light the moment with a distant crack of thunder.

"I could ruin your entire life before this whiskey melts," he said, gesturing casually to the glass.

There was no boast in his tone, just simple fact. "You look at me like you aren't afraid. That's either bravery or stupidity."

“Or maybe both”

Celine felt a spark of something close to anger, yes, but laced with an unwelcome awareness of how his presence pulled at her.

The controlled dominance in how he carried himself, the weight of his attention.

She hated herself for noticing. "Well, maybe it's something in between," she replied, her lips curving into a small smirk despite herself.

"Careful." His voice dropped lower, intimate in the crowded room.

"You're standing very close to the devil and looking a little too comfortable."

He held her gaze for a beat longer, then turned on his heel and walked away with precise, measured strides. The scent of him lingered, an unwelcome scent that clung to her senses.

Celine exhaled slowly, her tray suddenly heavier. She moved on, refilling glasses with practiced grace, but her mind raced.

*Get it together,* she told herself. *You're here for a reason. Observe. Infiltrate. Destroy.* The party continued around her the laughter, the deals whispered over champagns, the oblivious elite. She hated them all a little more for it.

Later, as the evening deepened, she was reassigned to the head table.

Her supervisor, a woman with a clipboard, had nodded slightly. "Refills only. Keep it discreet."

Celine approached with fresh bottles, her steps measured. Adrian sat at the center, flanked both sides by business partners whose faces she recognized from old photos and news clippings investors, allies, vultures. The hair on her arms rose as she neared him, a primal warning she ignored.

She leaned in to refill his glass, her hand steady despite the storm inside her. His eyes followed her movements, heavy and unreadable. Around the table she went, pouring with practiced care. Then it happened.

One of Adrian's investors, a portly man known in certain circles for his wandering hands and loose morals, let his palm slide down her back as she passed.

Lower. Boldly onto the curve of her ass.

"What the……" Celine gasped, jolting forward.

Before she could finish, Adrian's hand shot out like a viper. He grabbed the man by the collar of his expensive suit, yanking him half out of his chair.

"You touch her again," Adrian murmured, his voice low and laced with cold fury, "and you leave here without your hands."

The killer energy in his eyes was unmistakable, raw, a power that silenced the immediate area.

The investor, controlled by wine or absolute idiocy, sneered and reached for Celine's arm again, his grip bruising.

She jolted, the tray tipping.

Glasses of champagne crashed to the marble floor, shattering. The entire ballroom fell into a stunned hush. Heads turned. Whispers rippled outward.

Security acted almost instantly, dragging the man away amid protests.

Adrian remained seated, his expression one of terrifying calm, as if the disruption were beneath him. Guests resumed their conversations hesitantly, but the tension lingered. Celine knelt quickly to gather the larger shards, her cheeks burning not from embarrassment, but from the conflicting surge of unwanted gratitude mixed with her rage.

*He defended you,* a traitorous voice whispered. *No. It's control. Everything with him is controlled.*

She excused herself moments later, slipping toward the service areas before anyone could question her.

But her true destination was elsewhere. The study. She had studied the floor plans obsessively.

This was her window while the party distracted the elite, she would find what she needed. Proof. Leverage. Something to begin unraveling Adrian's world.

Heart pounding, she walked through the hallways with feigned confusion, glancing at "lost" directions on her phone for the cameras.

Down one corridor, up another.

The faint sounds of music and laughter faded behind her. At the end of the west wing hallway stood the door, darker wood, heavier hardware, a clear warning.

*No trespassing.*

Celine glanced both ways, then produced her gold hairpin. "Six months of practice," she muttered under her breath. "Don't fail me now."

The lock was twisted. She worked it patiently, ears straining for footsteps, sweat beading at her temples. Click. The door yielded softly.

Inside, the study enveloped her in its scent: aged leather, aged whiskey, and that damned cologne. The room was many bookshelves lined with rare volumes of books, a massive oak desk, everything in a perfect order.

A control freak's sanctuary. Her eyes landed on a drawer that stood out, its hardware slightly more dark, as if guarding secrets.

She knelt, tools ready, and began picking the second lock. Time stretched. Beads of sweat traced down her spine. Finally, it opened.

A thick black file with gold-edged pages rested inside, clearly handled often. Celine's breath caught as she lifted it. The first page: SEBASTIAN WOLFE** in bold, italic script.
