The night passed slowly, painfully, but she managed.

By morning, Fatima had the kids ready for school. Even Wave went to a daycare facility. Mrs. Wilson had breakfast ready, and Fatima sat with the kids as they ate. She had no appetite, but before they could ask her questions, she forced herself to eat anyway.

Mrs. Wilson informed her that her husband had already left by the time she arrived and that Mr. Kingston was staying in one of the guestrooms. “I’ll take breakfast to him now,” Mrs. Wilson said.

Fatima stopped her gently and asked her to take it after they had all left. She whispered so the kids wouldn’t hear. She didn’t want them to know he was there, they would want to see him, and she didn’t want them to see him like that.

After breakfast, they were ready to go. The storm had calmed, though it was still raining lightly. Fatima drove the kids to school and then headed to work.

When she arrived, she found her office decorated.

“You got an upgrade,” Gisele said excitedly. “They even gave you the chair you’ve been asking for forever.”

Gisele, her best friend and a nurse at Oakwood Medical, beamed at her. Fatima had been promoted to MD, Clinical Supervisor years ago, which came with her own office.

“I see,” Fatima said distractedly, reaching for her phone as she noticed the email her lawyer had sent.

She had filed for divorce weeks ago. The papers were ready. Nicholas had been acting strange, and the cheating scandal had gone far enough to threaten her image.

She had been holding the divorce papers in his office when he walked in and told her they were renewing their vows. She thought they were finally going to fix their marriage. He hadn’t been present as a husband for months, hadn’t even touched her, but when he spoke about renewing their vows, she believed him. She hid the divorce papers in a hurry and got distracted planning the wedding.

That was why she told him to check his drawer and instructed her lawyer to continue with the process after she had asked him to dismiss it days earlier.

“I’ll leave you to it,” Gigi said. “Once I’m on break, I’m coming back so you tell me everything.”

Fatima nodded, forcing a smile. After Gisele left, she sank into her chair, covering her mouth as reality crashed over her again.

It had all been there, the late-night calls, the frequent trips. She should have known. Even when she first filed for divorce, she believed they had simply outgrown each other. But now she knew the truth. She had seen it with her own eyes. He admitted it had been going on for three years. Three years.

She wondered how stupid she must have looked. How many times he had probably laughed at her for not seeing it. Tears slid down her cheeks as she stared at the new rings on her finger. She had accepted them even after he had said another woman’s name… three times.

She reached to pull them off.

“I wouldn’t do that just yet.”

Fatima looked up sharply to see Violet standing in the doorway, her handbag at her side. One look at her face told Fatima she already heard.

Violet was Nicholas’s mother. Image was everything to her. She had been the loudest voice insisting on renewing the vows. And she had never liked Fatima. She saw her the same way Nicholas did: as someone useful for appearances.

“Mother,” Fatima said quickly, standing up and inviting her in.

Violet paused, scanning the office with visible distaste before stepping inside. No diamonds. No luxury. Nothing worthy, in her eyes.

“First things first,” Violet said, standing instead of sitting. “You and Nicholas are not getting a divorce.” She spoke with quiet finality.

Fatima dropped back into her chair, bracing herself. She was about to speak when two more figures stepped into the office. Nicholas and Leslie.

Fatima stood immediately.

They stopped a short distance away. Nicholas was holding a brown envelope. She barely had time to wonder what it was before he spoke, explaining that they had the test results.

Her stomach dropped.

Violet must have dragged them to the hospital. That was just like her. But bringing them here, into Fatima’s office? “Give it to Fatima,” Violet said. “She’s the doctor here.”

Fatima’s breath caught.

She had to look at her husband’s mistress’s pregnancy results.

Just what kind of cruel fate was this?

****

Fatima walked to her desk and sat down, staring blankly at the papers in front of her without really seeing them. The new wedding ring on her finger caught the light. Slowly, deliberately, she reached up and began to twist it.

“I wouldn’t do that just yet.”

The voice came from behind her.

Fatima froze.

Her head snapped up as she turned toward the sound.

A man was sitting in her chair.

Ian Kingston.

Nicholas’s friend.

He looked completely at ease—one arm draped over the armrest, long legs stretched out in front of him as if this were his office. His jacket was gone, his shirt slightly undone, the faint scent of antiseptic still clinging to him.

“What are you doing in my office?” she asked sharply, she asked, confused. When she left earlier, the Ashfords had been here.

He rose to his feet with an easy smile. “You stitched my wound,” he said casually, rising from her chair. “I came for a follow-up.”

He stepped closer. Fatima moved back instinctively, remembering how he had shown up at her door the night before with a bullet lodged in his arm.

“What are you doing?” she asked, panic slipping into her voice as he closed the distance.

“Well,” he said lightly, stopping just short of her, “you locked the door.”

He took two steps back, giving himself a perfect view of her.

“I thought you’d buy me a drink first but…” Using his good hand, he began unbuttoning his shirt, letting his gaze linger on her neck, the sinful intent behind it clear.

“I’m a man, despite the billion-dollar company I own… sometimes I go on sale,” he added with a wink, and the effect of it hit her lower belly, a gasp escaping her lips as a shiver ran down her back, making her body tingle in a way her mind refused to acknowledge – a truth she had denied since the day she met him.

It was the next morning. Fatima had barely slept the night before. Since she didn’t take any sleep medication, it was even worse. She kept turning, but as a mother she still had responsibilities, even with Mrs. Wilson there. As soon as her seven a.m. alarm went off, she got up and started her day. After a few minutes to get herself ready, she went downstairs. She found Mrs. Wilson already in the kitchen. Breakfast was made.“You don’t seem to have had a good night’s sleep,” the woman said, handing her a cup of coffee.“Thank you.” Fatima took the cup, sat on the kitchen stool, and took a sip while Mrs. Wilson continued working. “Are the kids awake?”“Yes. They already had their morning bath. Ms. Bonnie is helping Mr. Wave with his shoes. She insisted.”“Alright. Um, so I have an awkward question.” Fatima started. The woman nodded. “You worked for my parents, right?”“I’ve been with the family for years, Mrs. Kingston.”“Fatima. I keep asking you to call me Fatima.”“I can’t.” The woma

Of course Madelyn was alive. Fatima already knew that. She felt sorry for Ryan because he had no idea Madelyn had probably moved on. Madelyn had made it clear she didn’t love him anymore. But Fatima knew telling Ryan the truth would only start an argument.“Ryan.” Fatima swallowed hard as he handed her his phone.“Please speak to her. I’m overwhelmed right now,” he said.Luckily the call hadn’t started yet. It was just in the caller log. Fatima didn’t know what to do. If she refused, Ryan might start to suspect her. So she took the phone and pressed the call button.Fortunately, the call went straight to voicemail.“No, something is wrong.” Ryan grabbed the phone from her hands. “I heard her voice. She’s alive.” He tried calling again himself.Fatima wanted to tell him the truth, that Madelyn probably heard his voice and ended the call because she didn’t want to talk to him. But she knew better than to say it.“Are you sure it’s her?”“It’s her number, Fatima. It’s her,” he said, soun

Obviously Fatima didn’t want her kids far away. She couldn’t bear the thought. But she also knew Nicholas was right. These kids needed to be away from all the drama. Everything would be much easier if they were somewhere safe.“Let me connect him,” Fatima said. She added David to the call.“Oh my god, if it’s not my favourite great-grandchild,” David sounded excited on the other end. He thought he was speaking to Bonnie.“Hello, Grandpa. How are you?” Fatima said.David cleared his throat and his voice became serious when he realized it was Fatima. He hadn’t forgotten how he had done her dirty. He felt bad about it, but he didn’t regret it. If he could choose today, he would still do the same thing.“Fatima. How have you been holding up? I’m sorry I haven’t gotten time to check up on you.”“I’ve been good. Listen, Nicholas is on the line.”“I’m sorry, child. There’s nothing I can do. That clause was put in place by my grandfather,” David said. He thought they were calling to ask for h

It wasn’t that she really cared, but this was surely shocking. He had just been with her a few minutes ago. Death, right?“Ian is dead?” she asked.“I have no idea. The crazy thing is he came to attack me, then someone else started attacking him.”“I don’t get it. What do you mean by someone else?”“Well, he ran with me. He had a bullet. He might be fine.”“So you two escaped?”“I can’t drive, so he had to drive.”“What?” This was confusing for Fatima. “You’re saying that you and Ian rode together and he didn’t kill you?”“He was not going to kill me in the first place. He just wanted to bruise me. But yes, I needed to leave that place ASAP.” Fatima understood what he was saying.“So, you both have a new enemy?”“It looks like it. Whoever it was, they were prepared. They shot up the place and seemed to be aiming for both of us. They might have heard we were both there. They wanted to kill two birds with one stone,” he explained.“Great. That means the two of you are now cool, right?”

Fatima went on and told Ryan how, even five years ago, Madelyn had tried to force herself on Nicholas.“I don’t know, but I think she was only with you because you’re Nicholas’s cousin.”“She was celibate before meeting Nicholas.”“They just hooked up in a club,” Fatima clarified, because he was starting to make excuses for her.“Yes, and you know how she is. She probably got attached.”“After one night? Listen—”“I’m sorry, are you the reason Madelyn is in this condition now?”“Huh?” Fatima was confused.“Maybe you found out about the hookup and—”“You know I’m not that kind of person. What are you trying to say?”“Well, to think of it, Nicholas was the first person arrested for her accident. She said she saw him, so maybe you’re trying to cover for your baby daddy?” Ryan sounded serious as he raised his eyebrows.Fatima remembered the last time he had even called the police on her. She knew he didn’t play about Madelyn.“You know what? It’s fine.” Fatima realised she would just be w

How the hell was that even possible? Being in love with two men at the same time? Both jerks? What was wrong with her? She wasn’t some teenager. She was twenty-eight, for goodness’ sake. What in the world was this?Okay, Fatima decided she had had enough of talking about her messed-up love life. She dismissed the conversation before her therapist could dig any deeper, said goodbye, and promised to call back soon.Right then, a knock sounded at the door. It was Mrs. Wilson and Bonnie.“Mommy, why is she here?” Bonnie asked as soon as Fatima opened the door.“Honey, it’s business.”“She still works with Daddy?” Bonnie sounded judgmental. She didn’t want Leslie anywhere near her mom. “And why was she asking for you?” Fatima looked at Mrs. Wilson, whose facial expression clearly showed she agreed with Bonnie.Yeah, Leslie had been rude to her kids before. Fatima still remembered that day when Leslie insisted she would rather Nicholas take her to the hospital than drive the kids to school.

After the strange call with Nicholas earlier, Fatima began to suspect Ian. He was right in front of her, so she confronted him, but Ian denied working with Nicholas and, once again, insisted he had nothing to do with him.“So you’re trying to drive me crazy now?” Fatima questioned, because none of
