I was so angry at Hannah's mother! I had never seen a mother talk to her daughter like that. Not even my grandmother, who was always picking on my mother and aunt, had ever said such cruel things. And I saw the disappointment and sadness in Hannah's eyes. I saw when she simply closed her eyes and waited for the blow from her mother's hand, the woman who should love her above all else. My mother had never hit me, not even threatened to.

But I understood that woman didn't love Hannah.
