Chapter 2

Author: Dottie
As I drifted in and out of consciousness, I had a dream.

In my dream, I was fortune's favorite since I was young.

Edith doted on me as if I were a rare jewel, and Lucille never left my side as I grew up.

That was, until the day Trenton set foot into our home as the illegitimate son of our father, Randall Cox. From that very first day, the rivalry was set in motion.

He staged over a dozen suicide attempts in three years—slitting his wrists, overdosing on pills, turning on the gas. And each time, he "just so happened to be accidentally" discovered by Edith or Lucille.

However, Edith merely frowned with exasperation when she caught sight of the sleeping pill bottles scattered across the floor.

"Is pulling cheap stunts for attention the only thing you're good at?"

Lucille bypassed Trenton entirely as he knelt there on the floor in tears. She took my hand and immediately turned to leave.

"Ignore Trenton. I'm taking you to school."

The annoyance in their eyes was so genuine that it never once crossed my mind that their favoritism toward me could ever fade.

Thus, when Trenton staged yet another rooftop suicide threat on the very day Lucille and I signed our marriage papers, no one bothered to take his theatrics seriously.

Edith watched on with cold indifference, while Lucille's expression was utterly indifferent as she casually moved to hang up the phone.

Except this time, Trenton gave a bleak smile and simply jumped.

In the video, Edith's face twisted with horror as she bolted madly toward where Trenton threw himself off the ledge.

Lucille stood frozen where she was, phone clutched in her hand, her entire face draining to a ghastly white in an instant.

That day, I walked out of the courthouse in a daze, and in my hand was a divorce decree.

The unrestrained teasing of Lucille's friends still echoed in my ears.

"Lucille, you got divorced just three hours after getting married? Did you bring Elmer to the city hall and the courthouse for a taste of ordinary life or something?"

"Didn't you say just a while ago that you couldn't even stand the sight of Trenton? So, how come your face went completely white the moment he jumped?"

"What do you people know? Lucille's just sharp-tongued but soft-hearted. She says she hates him, but deep down, who knows how much she actually aches for him?"

For the first time ever, Lucille didn't coldly refute them. Instead, she simply frowned with impatience and said, "Shut up."

Then, she walked straight past me and dialed Trenton's number, which at some unknown point had already been pinned to the top of her contacts.

"I've gotten the divorce. Can you let the doctor treat your wounds now?"

Whatever was said on the other end of the line drew a sigh from Lucille. Then, with a note of resignation in her voice, she said, "Fine, whatever you say. I'm going back now to spend time with you."

It wasn't until her car sped past me, nearly brushing against me, that I belatedly realized what had just happened.

By the time I rushed back home, Lucille was draping a coat over Trenton's shoulders.

The room was a complete wreck. My gaze fell upon the fingernail scratches carved across the wedding photo on the nightstand. It wasn't hard to imagine just how indecent the position they had been in moments ago must have been.

My stomach churned violently.

Trenton peeked out from behind Lucille and said with a cruel smirk, "Elmer, it's not what you think. Lucille and I—"

Before he could finish, the dull thud of a punch rang throughout the room.

He clutched his jaw, staring at me in disbelief.

Almost in the same instant, I was kicked brutally by the ground.

I looked up and saw Edith, who had burst in with her bodyguards. She was glaring at me with fury written all over her face.

"Elmer, apologize to Trenton this instant!" She loomed before me, her voice ice-cold. "Trenton's depression only gets better when he's with Lucille. Can't you be a little more understanding and give him a break? Apologize to him right now!"

The way Lucille looked at me was filled with the same disgust.

"Elmer, no matter what happens between me and Trenton, you're still the only one I'll marry in the end. So, why do you have to push him to the brink like this? It's not like Trenton did anything wrong—you've truly gone too far this time. Now hurry up and apologize to him!"

Lucille's face blurred and grew unrecognizable before my eyes.

In a daze, all I could feel was that the person who had grown up beside me, who had charged alone into a kidnappers' den to save me, and who had even been willing to ruin her own hands for my sake, was drifting further and further away from me.

I swept my gaze around everything in the room, and my eyes happened to meet Trenton's. He was smirking tauntingly at me.

I jolted awake violently from the nightmare.

Before my mind had fully awakened, the name I'd called upon for 20 years escaped my lips before I even knew it.

"Edith…"

The police moved fast. In just three days, every detail of an entire black market operation had been unearthed. The scale of the network and the brutality of its methods shocked all of Capburg."Trenton Cox!" Edith growled, her eyes bloodshot.Lucille said nothing. Only the violent rise and fall of her chest betrayed her emotions. The evidence was irrefutable, and every participant was sentenced to death.Trenton was intercepted by police cars on his way to the airport. The moment he heard the car door open, he let out a terrified shriek. He tried to jump out and run, but Edith yanked him right back."I was wrong! I truly know I was wrong now!" he cried out hoarsely and crawled to Edith, desperate to wrap his arms around her leg.But she evaded him.He collapsed to the ground in a heap. After a long moment, he came back to his senses and turned to Lucille."Lucille, save me," he begged with tears and snot streaming down his face. "I love you so much. We almost got married! Plea

Lucille ultimately postponed her wedding to Trenton.Even though he nearly blew up her phone, she replied with only two words, "Wedding postponed."That day, she stood outside the door and watched me for a long time. Even when I finally passed out from exhaustion, she was still standing there.I didn't know when she finally left, only that I vaguely heard her exchanging a few hushed words with Edith outside the door before she did. From that day on, Edith barely left my side. She personally changed my bandages and gave me water. Her movements were clumsy, yet achingly tender. The psychologist, Ambrose Diaz, came multiple times. However, I remained silent, refusing to utter a single word.As for Lucille, she pulled every string she had and joined forces with Edith's people, launching a frantic investigation into everyone connected to Paradise Island. Those people had already planned to flee abroad to lay low, but they were all intercepted at the airport transit hub.The moment

The doctor's expression was extremely grave. He looked up at Edith with a complicated gaze."The patient is in extremely poor shape. He has sustained severe trauma to multiple areas of the body. These burn marks are from repeated electric shocks, and the abdominal cavity shows evidence of multiple organ extractions."He's undergone forced organ harvesting at least three times. The most recent was no more than three days ago." He paused, then sighed. "But the most troubling issue is his mental state."The patient appears to have been trapped in some kind of extremely traumatic, fear-inducing memory for a prolonged period. His cognitive faculties are showing signs of dissociation.""Forced organ harvesting?" Edith repeated numbly, as if the words refused to make sense. She shook her head vigorously, her voice suddenly rising. "That's impossible! Doctor, you must have made a mistake. How could Elmer possibly—"She stopped mid-sentence and lunged toward the bed, wrapping her arms arou

When Trenton was first brought home, Edith actually couldn't stand him."Not only is he clumsy, but he can't do anything right either. If he keeps this up, I really should throw him out. A little scratch and he won't stop yapping about it. What kind of man acts like that?"Ugh, it's so annoying. All he does is spout pretty words—was the cake I made really that good? If it were you, you'd have found something to criticize ages ago."Back then, I didn't catch the subtle shift gradually creeping into those impatient scoldings. When did things start to change?Probably after that party, Trenton vanished without any warning. When he was found in a dark alley, his clothes were disheveled, his mind in shambles. From then on, he suffered from severe depression. After that, he started trying to kill himself every few days. The methods were still as cliche as ever, but with "depression" as a convenient excuse, neither Either nor Lucille treated him with the same coldness as before. Then

"H-How did this happen?" Edith asked, her voice shaking so badly that it nearly cracked. She was being held up by a maid, her legs so weak she could barely stand. Her gaze swept over the torn clothes on the floor, then shot up to land on my scar-covered body. Her face, always so composed, was now deathly pale.I stood there numbly, staring at the stunned faces around me. My ears were ringing, and my vision swam, making it hard to make out the people around me.Lucille snapped out of it faster than Edith. She instinctively stepped forward and reached out to touch me.But just as her fingertips were about to make contact, Edith suddenly screamed with bloodshot eyes, "Don't touch him! Lucille, you're about to marry Trenton, so don't you dare touch Elmer!"Lucille froze in place, as if those words had nailed her to the spot. She opened her mouth, but no sound came out. She simply stared in a daze at the gruesome injuries on my body, her face slowly turning ashen. While they were lo

Gasping for air, I leaned against the wall and slowly slid down to the ground.I hadn't had a single moment's relief from the pain, and three years of pent-up anguish erupted all at once.I lost all control and exploded toward the door, my voice a ragged snarl."What are you all busy with? Are you busy preparing for Trenton and Lucille's wedding? Or busy forcing me to be the best man for a homewrecker who knew exactly what he was doing?"Silence fell outside the door for a beat. Then, Edith suddenly said in a sharp tone, "What nonsense are you spouting? Everyone knows Trenton and Lucille have been together for years. If anything, you're the one who forced your way in between them."Her voice faltered, as if something had suddenly crossed her mind. When she spoke again, her tone had shifted."Elmer, there's no first-come, first-served when it comes to matters of the heart. Trenton is the one Lucille loves now. And besides, you know Trenton's condition."All these years, he's only
