•Cassie POV•

“Mommy, who’s that man?” Cara asked as she sat in the back seat of the car, her head resting on my laps while I brushed my hand over her hair.

“Baby, that man is someone mommy once knew a long time ago,” I muttered, playing with a strand of her hair. “He used to mean a lot to mommy, but not anymore. That’s why mommy was harsh to him.”

Cara pouted and adjusted softly on my legs. “Okay, mommy.”

I took in a deep breath and rested my back against the seat, staring as the city blurred past. It had been a good seven years, and I hadn’t expected Scott to still act like the incident had happened just yesterday. I remembered the day I said yes to Jerald.

I thought of Scott, how much I wanted him to suffer the way I had. But as I started to receive love and attention from Jerald, I felt maybe things happened for a reason. If that incident hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have found Jerald.

But now, seeing Scott always trying to get my attention, I didn’t know if getting a restraining or

•Cassie POV•The next morning, I woke up early to get Cara ready for school. The room was still quiet, the curtains barely letting in the soft morning light. I helped her sit up on the bed and gave her the medication the doctor prescribed. He said she was okay now, but I still needed to make sure whatever caused the reaction didn’t happen again. She swallowed it slowly, her face calm, but her eyes looked tired.“Mommy, I don’t want to wear a bow today,” Cara said as I reached for the purple bow, about to pin it on her neatly packed ponytail.I paused and leaned closer so I could look at her face. “Why, baby?” I asked gently. “You love wearing your bow to school.”“Yes, mommy,” she said quietly, “but I don’t want to today. Aunt Maria said I’ll get bullied, and my bows make me look like a doll on display.”My heart skipped, and a sharp heat rushed through me. I forced myself to stay calm as I crouched to her level, placing my hands on her knees.“How could she say that to you?” I mutter

•Scot POV•The ringing tone of my phone woke me up, and I reached over to grab it from the nightstand, checking the caller ID before answering the call.“Hey man, you won’t believe this,” Charles’ voice came through, and I shifted on the bed, rolling to the other side. The hangover had relieved me, but I could still feel a slight pain around my scalp. “What happened? If you’re about to start asking me questions, I’m not in the mood to answer any of them.”“Chill,” he said. “But I’ve got some information that might interest you. I got a call from my boss today, the one at Carter, and he told me a reputable family is in need of a bodyguard. I didn’t know which family until I realized it was the Lewis family.”I sat up immediately when I heard the last word. “Are you seriously kidding me? If this is a prank to lure me out, I’m not interested, Charles. I need to rest my head.”“Well, I’m not telling you to leave your house,” Charles clicked his tongue. “I’m just letting you know because I

•Cassie POV•I sat in the car, waiting for Tamara to come out, my pulse racing as my thoughts went back to what Layla had said. How did she know I came to do a DNA test? Did she know something I didn’t?My fingers tightened around the steering wheel as my heart beat faster.I shook my head slowly. “There’s no way she could know that,” I whispered to myself, trying to calm my thoughts. She must have just been guessing. Layla always liked to talk like she knew more than she actually did.Still, the thought refused to leave my head.I was so lost in it that I didn’t notice the passenger door open until Tamara slid into the seat and shut it loudly.“I thought you were going to wait for me at the reception,” she muttered, dropping her bag by her feet.I turned to her, my hand shaking slightly as it rested on my lap. “Tammy… I saw Layla at the hospital.”She raised a brow. “Okay… and?”“She knew,” I said quietly. “She knew I came to do a DNA test.”Tamara’s eyes widened as she stared at me

•Scott POV•I adjusted my position on the couch, my eyes slowly opening as they caught the light from the chandelier above. I groaned, my hand going straight to my forehead, rubbing it as if that would make the pain ease. It only made it worse. My head felt like it was splitting in two.“How are you feeling now?” Charles asked as he walked into the living room, holding a mug. He sank into the couch opposite mine.“I’m fine,” I mumbled as I sat up. “But this headache is terrible.”“Well, you drank too much last night. I knew you were going to wake up with a terrible hangover,” Charles said plainly.I stood up and grabbed my phone from the couch beside me. The screen was filled with missed calls, but I didn’t bother checking them. “I have to go. Maybe get some painkillers.”Charles studied me for a moment, his eyes softening. “Layla called.”I paused.“She’s been worried sick about you.”I exhaled slowly, running a hand through my hair. “I hope you didn’t tell her I was here.”Charles f

  • It's Too Late Now   Chapter 35

•Cassie POV•I pulled the car into Tamara’s driveway and sat there for a while without stepping out. I took a deep breath, brushing my hand over my hair as I tried to calm myself. My heart was thumping fast, and the fear that everything might get ruined because of what Maria said hit me harder than anything that had happened in the past.I finally opened the car door and stepped out, walking toward Tamara’s front door. After knocking twice, she opened it.“Cassie, I’m so happy to see you,” she said with a cheerful smile. “You came at the right time. I just finished making pancakes, and I got some fizzy drink.”I followed her inside and sank into a chair, dropping my bag beside me. Tamara left the room and returned with a plate of cupcakes, placing them on the table before heading to the fridge for drinks.“What’s with the long face?” she asked, noticing I wasn’t giving off my usual cheerful vibe. “Did something happen?”“Yes, Tamara,” I said quietly. “After the incident at the pool, M
