Chapter 2

Author: Orange Cravings
Milton's cold words stabbed into my heart like steel needles. The exhaust fumes from the car made my lungs seize up, and suddenly, I coughed up a mouthful of blood.

After wiping it away with the back of my hand, I let out a bitter laugh.

Milton's loyalty would always tip toward Rita.

"Oh, my God! That kid's foaming at the mouth! Is he dying?"

Panic rippled through the crowd, but not a single person stepped forward to help.

While holding my breath, I pushed through the chaos and loosened Oliver's collar. "Wake up! Don't fall asleep!"

But his pupils had already gone dull. He was too weak to respond.

Suddenly, a still-burning cigarette butt droppped nearby and reignited the lingering hydrogen. In an instant, flames shot up toward the sky, and a wave of scorching heat slammed into us.

Screams erupted around me. In the chaos, I was shoved and trampled, my wrists and ankles swollen and throbbing.

When I looked down, I met Oliver's terrified gaze. His voice was barely a whisper. "Larissa… run…"

It felt like the fire was boiling the blood in my veins.

The skin on my back sizzled from the heat. My vision swam, and a cry escaped my lips as pain seared through my body.

I clenched my teeth, hoisted Oliver onto my back, and ran toward the nearby fountain.

Pushed left and right by the panicked crowd, I eventually dropped to my knees.

Sharp stones tore into my skin, but I kept going. While pressing on his chest again and again, I called to him softly, over and over.

Finally, his chest began to rise and fall with strength again. And just like that, everything drained from me. I collapsed beside him, hollow as an empty shell.

The bodyguards arrived too late. The moment their eyes landed on me, they gasped.

"In less than an hour… Ms. Glisson's entire body is torn to shreds! If it weren't for her, Mr. Oliver would've—"

Oliver, who had just regained consciousness, burst into tears and gripped my hand tightly. "Larissa… I don't want you to die."

I didn't allow myself to close my eyes until I saw Mr. Patton Senior—Oliver's grandfather—personally escort Oliver into the ambulance.

When I opened them again, my entire body was hooked up to machines.

During rounds, the doctor said I was incredibly lucky to survive. My will to live during surgery had been so weak, but every time the child was mentioned, my heart rate steadied.

When I heard that the baby was safe, I finally let out a long breath of relief.

The hospital room door opened. Mr. Patton Senior entered, and the moment he saw I was awake, his face lit up with joy. He immediately moved as if to bow.

"Larissa, if Oliver hadn't been willing to trust you, I never would've dragged you into this. You could've been home with your family, celebrating together."

At his words, I lowered my eyes and gave a bitter smile.

What family? Besides the child in my belly, I had no one left.

"I swear I'll get to the bottom of who set off those fireworks. You deserve an answer."

I quickly helped him up, my nose stinging with emotion at the rare moment of concern.

He had no real obligation to me, yet here he was—fighting for justice on my behalf. Meanwhile, my husband, Milton, had already branded me the culprit.

My lips curled into a smile that felt more painful than tears. Just thinking about Milton's cold indifference drained every last bit of color from my face.

Upon noticing my silence, Mr. Patton Senior sighed and gently patted my shoulder before heading for the door.

"As long as Patton Group stands, you'll always be our savior," he said.

I nodded firmly, truly grateful for that warmth.

But just as I let myself soak in the brief comfort, an unwelcome visitor stormed in.

"Larissa, who gave you permission to steal Rita's primary doctor?"

Without warning, Milton yanked me up from the bed. The tight furrow of his brows made his displeasure crystal clear.

Rita clung to his side, shrinking back when her gaze met mine, her eyes red-rimmed and watery.

"It's okay, Milton… Larissa's already hurt me so many times. I'm used to it. Please don't fight because of me," she whined.

Her trembling voice only poured fuel on Milton's fury. He jabbed a finger hard against my forehead. "If it weren't for Rita holding me back, I would've taught you a real lesson!"

Then, his voice dropped to a threatening growl. "I'll ask you one thing—are you giving him up or not?"

Rita broke down even further, her voice cracking with desperation. "You promised when we were kids that you'd marry me! Why did you marry Larissa instead? Just because she saved your life? You never loved her—if you did, how could you believe me so easily?"Just then, Mr. Patton Senior's voice cut through the chaos. "Milton, don't forget who caused that car accident all those years ago."Rita widened her eyes instantly. "How do you know that?"She realized too late she'd said too much—fear spread across her face like wildfire. And just as expected, Milton snapped. He tore at the patch of skin grafted onto Rita's body—my skin. As she fell, her gaze caught mine. "Larissa… you're alive?"At her words, Milton's head

"I've cut ties with Rita. Is that what you all wanted?" Milton's shoulders slumped, and his voice was heavy with bitterness."There's a reason for everything… Rita and I grew up together. If Larissa hadn't saved me back then, the one I should've married was—"Before he even finished the sentence, the last defense around my heart crumbled completely. I'd never felt so shattered."It's not that I didn't love her, I just couldn't let go of my guilt toward Rita. But now I finally understand… the one I truly love is Larissa," he continued in a low voice. The once-powerful, untouchable Milton—now pale as a ghost—could barely stay on his feet."If you'll just tell me where she is…" His pursed lips tightened as he made a shocking declaration."I'll announce the bankruptcy of Jenning Group and live a simple life with Larissa—as just husband and wife."But to me, every word dripped with hypocrisy. When he was worth billions, he couldn't even protect me. If he were penniless… how much mor

Under Mr. Patton Senior's orders, a notice was posted outside the Patton residence gate.Clear and bold, it read, "Milton and dogs not allowed inside."In my memory, Milton had never looked so humbled–he begged the security guards in a low voice just for a chance to see me.From inside the courtyard, Oliver kicked a soccer ball straight at his head in an effort to stand up for me.Blood trickled from Milton's temple, but Mr. Patton Senior merely scoffed beside him. "Larissa's dead because of you. Who do you think you're putting on this little act for?" he mocked. The housekeepers followed his command and tossed all the bags Milton had brought directly into the trash, right in front of him. Then, loud and clear, Mr. Patton Senior announced that the Patton and Jenning families would never cooperate again.Milton opened his mouth, ready to explain, but after one call from Rita, he turned around without a word and walked away. Before leaving, he clenched his fists and looked Mr.

Thankfully, heaven showed me mercy—I survived. My only regret… was losing that innocent child.I often found myself sinking into silent sorrow. But maybe, in a way, it was a blessing. To be spared from being born into such a twisted family—wasn't that its own kind of luck?Mr. Patton Senior took me in as his goddaughter and brought me back to the Patton residence to recover and rest.Whenever I thought of Milton outside the OR—weeping and begging for forgiveness—my nose would sting. He hadn't even sent anyone to the hospital to check if I'd lived.Rita, on the other hand, had been incredibly active. Milton was overtaken by panic. He stared at my belly."Larissa… How could you possibly know Mr. Patton Senior? Wake up! You're faking it, aren't you? This is just another one of your tricks, right?" he shouted.Even he seemed to realize how absurd he sounded, but still, he desperately tried to shake me awake. But I lay there like a corpse—eyes wide and empty while staring blankly at the ceiling. In the distance, I thought I heard the faint cries of a baby. The sharp stench of blood and alcohol filled the room. Furious, Mr. Patton Senior kicked Milton aside like garbage. "What the hell are you doing just standing there? Call a doctor!"Everything became a blur as I was rushed into the operating room. Doctors from all over the hospital swarmed around me."The skin on her abdomen and back was forcibly removed. Severe burns. We can't save the baby.""The patient's bleeding out! She needs an emergency transfusion!""Mr. Smith, the blood bank's running low…"Suddenly, Milton bolte

Right after I finished speaking, Rita threw herself off the hospital bed. Her eyes were red-rimmed and swollen, filled with stubbornness and sorrow."Looks like I've been getting in the way of your perfect little family. The doctor said if I didn't get new skin grafts soon, the burns could kill me. Don't worry. I'll stay out of sight so I won't ruin your happiness," she said. She deliberately pulled back her sleeve, exposing the mottled, raw skin beneath. Then, with tears streaming down her face, she dialed her phone and called to give up on treatment. And with that, the last flicker of guilt in Milton's eyes vanished completely. He leaned in and gently kissed the corner of Rita's mouth. Then he turned to me, his gaze dark and venomous."You're not pregnant," he said quietly, his voice ice-cold.Then, he called the doctors into the room. "Since Rita needs new skin… cut it from her stomach."Without warning, he raised his foot and slammed it down on my abdomen, pinning me into th
