Raina huddled beneath a pile of branches, her fever getting worse by the minute. At first, she could still stay awake, forcing herself not to fall asleep, but eventually, she lost control. In her delirium, her foot slipped, and she suddenly fell from the tree!

Startled awake mid-fall, she instinctively reached out and managed to grab hold of a thick tree branch. It stopped her from plummeting to the ground, but the smaller twigs scratched and pierced her hands. Her palms were quickly covered in blood.

The pain brought her back to her senses, if only slightly. Looking around, she was surrounded by pitch-black darkness—no light at all. Just as she’d expected, no one had come looking for her. She had known, deep down, that no one would. Still, that truth didn’t stop the bitter ache in her chest. A deep, crushing sense of despair welled up inside her.

“Why though? I’ve seen some of their promotions—according to them, this VIREXIN is some kind of miracle drug. Okay, maybe not ‘raise the dead and regrow flesh’ miraculous, but apparently, it can drag someone back from death’s door if they’re still breathing…” Rael looked at Raina with a gossipy glint in his eye.The VIREXIN itself was actually poisonous. Back then, Raina had no idea why her mother was researching it, but she remembered clearly: her mother never intended to release it to the public. If Mireille hadn’t exposed it, almost no one would’ve even known the VIREXIN existed.Looking at the situation now, five years ago, Lucas had gone so far as to offer Jasper’s marriage as a bargaining chip to get his hands on the pill. That probably meant he’d already been sick back then—trying to use the VIREXIN to prolong his life. What he didn’t realize was, the pill wouldn’t save him—it would kill him.Raina shook her head. “The VIREXIN shouldn’t exist in this world to begin with. And Lu

The others didn’t know why Briar had left only these few people behind, but as always, they obeyed without question. As soon as Briar gave the order, the rest quickly dispersed. As the crowd streamed away like a receding tide, Briar asked, “Who prepared the ginger soup last night?”Though the remaining people all wore expressionless masks, their confusion and puzzlement were evident beneath them. One person stepped forward and said, “Master, it was me.”Briar gave a slight nod. “Very well. You may leave.”The person hesitated for a moment, still dazed, but obeyed the order and departed. That left four people, each still standing in the same spot as before.Briar glanced at them and asked in a sharp voice, “Does anyone wish to confess that it was you who put something in the ginger soup last night?”The shadow guards were instantly dumbfounded. After a brief silence, one person lifted his chin and asked, “Master, are you suspecting us?”That question was practically a challenge. The sh

His serious apology left Raina completely at a loss for words.Fortunately, Leif didn’t seem to expect her to respond. He silently reopened the first-aid kit and began treating the bite wound on her arm. This time, his movements were deliberate—careful to avoid any unnecessary contact with her.Raina: “…”She finally realized something was definitely off with Leif today! With a mix of confusion and unease, Raina glanced at him. But when she noticed him looking back, she quickly turned her gaze away. She didn’t dare meet his eyes, though she couldn’t resist wanting to know what expression he was wearing. The whole thing was driving her nuts. But to Leif, her strange behavior meant something else entirely. While wrapping her arm in gauze, he suddenly asked in a low voice, “Does it hurt a lot?”“Ah—” Raina blurted out. “It’s okay. Not that bad… Uh, Mr. Vexley, are you alright?”Whether it was the terrifying man from business rumors or the man she had been around these past few days, Leif

After taking care of everything, Raina stayed by Gale's side a while longer to make sure he was stable. Only then did she go to call Leif upstairs.Leif's expression was grim, but he didn’t say anything. He stepped up the stairs, one foot at a time. The moment he reached the top, his eyes fell on the white bandage wrapped around Raina’s left hand.He stared at her hand. Though his face didn’t change much, Raina suddenly had the feeling—maybe it was just her imagination—but it seemed like… he was really, really upset. After a long moment, Leif spoke, his voice calm but heavy:“What happened to your hand?”Raina hadn’t thought much of the injury herself. When he asked, she instinctively hid her hand behind her back and replied nonchalantly, “It’s nothing. I just accidentally cut myself earlier. I’ve already treated it, it’s fine. Let’s—”But before she could finish, she stopped abruptly—because the look on Leif’s face made her flinch. She instinctively took a small step back, unable to

Raina pressed her fingers to her forehead, momentarily speechless. What was wrong with this kid? Why couldn’t he just let it go? She had already tried so hard to change the subject, and yet he still insisted on dragging it back. How could Leif have such a blockheaded subordinate? At that moment, Leif finally couldn’t help but speak up. He said, “It was me.”Rael: “…”Ha. Men!Just as he was about to say something, a loud bang rang out behind them. All three instinctively turned—only to see that Gale had somehow fallen from his chair. His face had gone deathly pale, and his small hands were clutching his throat tightly, as if he were choking—or worse, trying to strangle himself. The veins in his arms were bulging, and his bloodshot eyes were filled with pain and terror.Raina sprang into action. She yanked her bag open and pulled out a small emergency kit, her voice sharp and urgent:“Something’s wrong—his Velvet Mercy symptoms are flaring up!”But… this didn’t make sense.Gale had bee
