Verna snarled and rose to her maximum height before lunging forward towards Enzir. She almost hit the former governor with her clawlike hands, but Enzir was quick to jump backwards while hurtling a bolt of energy towards Verna.
The snake creature screeched and was pushed backward by the strength of the energy bolt. She shook her head as if dazed, but otherwise seemed unharmed. She scanned the area for Enzir who was quick to dart away to safety. Verna saw Enzir running towards the crumbling walls of the ancient city and slithered towards him at full speed.
The giant reached the first line of outlaws who were throwing rocks at him using slings. The giant shielded his face from the onslaught of falling rocks and then took another step forward. The g
Casser fought the side by side with Remuel and they were able to hold their position against the onslaught of imperial soldiers. Remuel’s remaining outlaws stood their ground, but Casser knew from the sound of their breathing and the way that they held their weapons that they were all exhausted. Casser looked around him and saw the outlaws with their mouths open as they tried to catch their breaths.“I don’t think we can hold on much longer,” said Casser to Remuel who likewise looked around him at the valiant men and women who stayed behind to hold off the attacking imperial soldiers.“We will have to make our escape soon. The warm gust of wind reached the outlaws who immediately covered their faces with their hands as dust and debris flew all around them. Not a few of them cowered in fear as they saw the strange apparition above them. More than their fear of the giant and the snake creature who they had tried to hold off, the enormous apparition flying over them presented a more immediate danger that portend their imminent defeat and destruction.Much to the outlaws’ surprise the huge bird circled above them twice before dropping to the ground in front of them to face the attacking imperial forces. Casser was surprised at the sight of the giant bird in front of him and involuntarily lowered his jaw in his amazement. Remuel immediately raised a bow and aimed at the giant bird, getting ready to shoot at the first sign of aggression from the towering animal. Then, Remuel felt a gentle tap on his shoulder, urging him to lower his weapon. It was Enzir who had suddenly turned up as if out of n
Eldion found the noise of battle disconcerting and he struggled to keep track of all the movements around him. He could see where his friends were as they fought the increasing number of imperial soldiers that reached them. He fought as hard as he could using a long bamboo pole that Wen was able to find for him. He stayed near Wen and were able to incapacitate the few soldiers that were able to breach the line of outlaws led by Remuel and Casser.Eldion could tell from the flashes of light beyond the line of outlaws that Enzir and Lankko were shooting energy bolts at the soldiers while the deafening screech of the mankora was evidence that the giant bird was fighting the imperial soldiers as well. He took a glance and saw the towering figure of Kora. Aside from growing substantially in size, Eldion was amazed at how her appearance had changed as well. He would not have recognized her had Enzir not pointed at her and told Eldion and Wen that it was Kora, changed by the magic e
There was a flash of yellowish flight and Eldion looked around to see what it was. What he saw made his eyes open wide and his jaw drop. Kora’s huge wings were flapping wildly as she hovered over the courtyard. She had opened her beak and there issued what appeared to be a stream of fire. Soon, tall flames rose between the imperial soldiers and the area in front of the courtyard, stopping the imperial soldiers from going any further.Eldion saw Kora land on the ground and was quickly patted by Lankko as if to praise her for what she did. Enzir held on to Kora as well and talked excitedly with Lankko. Their words could not be heard, but it seemed to Eldion that they were expressing their own surprise at what Kora could do.Eldion felt a pat on his shoulder and realized that it was Casser calling him to come with him to the tunnels. Wen was standing next to him, also gazing at the wall of flames created by Kora to defend the entrance to the tunnels. The flames flic
Casser realized that he would not be able to get through the gap in time and stopped struggling as he reached for his long knife that was dangling from his belt. It felt awkward as he used his left hand to pull his weapon while his dominant right hand was being pulled by Wen and Eldion.“Stop it!” shouted Casser at Wen and Eldion who did not understand why Casser told them to stop. Then, they saw through the gap that the soldier was almost on top of Casser and his evil intent reflected on his face.Casser struggled to get his long knife free. In his haste, the long knife slipped from his hand and slid to the floor towards the approaching soldier. The soldier was caught unawares and slipped when he stepped on the round handle of Casser’s blade. There was a loud thud and Casser looked the collapsed form of the soldier. Then, just from behind the soldier stood Remuel holding his own long knife. He had saved Casser from the attacking soldier.“Cass
Casser approached Remuel and asked, “How about Noha and my cart? Where can I find them?”Remuel looked at Casser intently and pointed to a direction down the river. “You will just need to walk on this side of the river and follow it downstream. You will come across an old dirt road next to a shallow pond. I have called all of my outlaws who were standing guard and they told me that they left your cart under the trees. Noha should be cooling off or feeding in the water.”“Thank you,” said Casser and he extended a hand to Remuel. The two men shook each other’s hand firmly.“Stay out of trouble,” said Remuel.“I will and so should you,” replied Casser.Remuel then made a soft whistle that sounded in the forest. The outlaws immediately stood up from where they stood and made way through the trees. Eldion could tell that there were other outlaws waiting under the cover of the trees and fo
Remuel melded into the forest with his outlaws and the area around the waterfalls became clear of any sign of human activity. The small hole that served as entrance to the tunnels was very well hidden under a thick curtain of vines that it would be impossible to find for anyone who did not know that it was there.Eldion felt the wind blow and heard the rustle of leaves as the branches of the trees swayed. There was a faint spray of water that fell on his face and he seemed to remember the same feeling although he was not sure when. He looked at the glorious waterfalls that cascaded over the cliff face that was covered with moss that shone in the sunlight. Only the waterfalls and its pool were reached by sunlight as most of the area was shaded by the thick canopy overhead formed by the towering trees.“Let’s go, Eldion,” said Wen and Eldion remembered that they needed to follow the river downstream. He quickly joined Wen as she walked over the large pe
“Aren’t you even a bit worried that thieves just ransacked your cart?” Wen asked Casser as she watched him pour a bucketful of water all over Noha.Noha brayed and shook the water off her head and body. “Good girl! I know you liked that.” Casser spoke to Noha and walked towards Wen with the empty bucket still in his hand.“Nothing I can do about it, Wen. Whatever the thieves took is gone. There’s no use worrying about it,” replied Casser coolly. “I’m just glad they did not take everything.”As Casser spoke, he lifted the cover of the cart and climbed aboard. Inside, he saw that everything was in disarray and the empty pigeon cage was not in its proper place. When he saw Eldion holding his ceramic jug, he frowned and dropped his eyes. Then, he heaved a sigh and returned his gaze at Eldion.“I’m glad they didn’t take that because that means a lot to me. Just return it where
