Chapter 2

Autor: Nine-Cup Brew
Three days later, I deliberately took the day off from work to accompany Dad to court for the lawsuit.

"Once I get my wages back, the first thing I'll do is buy your mom a few new outfits. I can also help Uncle Daniel out so he can buy Iris a laptop for her college applications." The thought of getting his money back visibly lifted the old man's spirits, and he babbled on the entire ride.

Yet, the moment we arrived at the courthouse, Mr. Smith, who had contacted Dad the night before, seemed to have vanished off the face of the earth. No matter how many times we tried, we couldn't reach him.

"Did he get the time wrong?" Dad sat in the plaintiff's seat, anxiously picking at the thick calluses on his hands. "Clem was the one who contacted Mr. Smith, Cece. Why don't you call Clem and ask him?"

However, before I could dial Clement's number, the door was pushed open. The person who walked in wasn't Mr. Smith, but Ben's newly hired lawyer—the intern Clement had been staying late at the office to mentor and help with her thesis, Reina Ellington.

Right then, Mr. Smith finally answered the phone. "I'm so sorry, Celeste. Mr. Hawthorne suddenly sent me out of town to handle a case, so I can't take Mr. Blackwood's case at the moment."

As soon as he hung up on me, Reina's voice echoed through the courtroom. "Your Honor, I'm an attorney with Hawthorne Law Partners and the legal representative for the defendant, Ben Lindwood. We can proceed with the hearing."

"Hawthorne Law Partners, legal representative for the defendant..." Those words completely crushed the hope in Dad's heart. "Hawthorne Law Partners... Isn't that Clem's law firm, Cece? W-What's the meaning of this?"

My heart felt as if a sledgehammer had struck it. It never crossed my mind that Clement would go back on his word at the last minute, let alone that Reina would turn Dad from the plaintiff into the defendant.

"The defense hereby files a counterclaim in the labor dispute case brought by the plaintiff, Ben Lindwood, against David Blackwood.

"The grounds for the counterclaim are as follows—first of all, during his tenure, the defendant, David, led his team in carrying out construction in violation of regulations, resulting in substandard project quality and causing the plaintiff direct economic losses."

Reina stated mercilessly, "Secondly, throughout the construction process, the defendant used inferior materials in place of those specified in the contract and substituted substandard building materials, seriously violating the terms of the contract. Thirdly…"

The hearing lasted two hours. We didn't have a lawyer, and not a single witness dared to speak up for Dad. Even my appeals were deliberately interrupted.

He was stranded up there all on his own, stammering as he tried to explain himself. The more anxious he became, the harder it was for him to make himself understood.

Slowly, the judge's expression shifted from sympathy to impatience.

In the end, we lost. By the time the dust settled, the original 120 grand had ballooned to four times that amount, and Dad was ordered to pay Ben for emotional distress.

When we emerged from the courtroom, Dad clutched the ruling with trembling hands.

"It's going to be okay, Dad... I'll figure something out." I held his hand as my nose stung.

Just then, a black Mercedes pulled up in front of us. When Clement climbed out of his car, Dad's dim eyes abruptly flared back to life.

He hurriedly greeted him, clutching the ruling. "Clem, you're here! Are you here to help me—"

Clement, however, walked right past us. He popped open his umbrella and stopped in front of Reina. "Great work today. You must be exhausted. I made reservations at your favorite fine-dining restaurant to celebrate your victory!"

Reina smiled and slipped her arm through his. "I couldn't have pulled off that counterclaim without your help, Professor Hawthorne!"

"You were exceptional to begin with. I merely put the cherry on top." The couple chatted and laughed as they walked down the steps, as if no one else existed around them.

My fingernails dug deep into my palms as I called out to Clement, "Clement Hawthorne, are you deaf? Did you not hear Dad?"

The air instantly froze.

Ben walked out of the courthouse, his gaze shifting between Clement and Dad. "Mr. Hawthorne, is this your father-in-law?"

Clement didn't even bat an eye. "I don't know him."

Ben's expression visibly relaxed. He turned around and glared at Dad menacingly. "Did you hear that, old man? The big-shot attorney doesn't even know you, yet you have the nerve to pretend you're his father-in-law. Why don't you take a good look in the mirror and see who you are?"

Dad's face turned beet red. His lips trembled, yet he couldn't make a sound.

"Clement Hawthorne, you bloody bastard!" I bellowed.

However, he only halted for a fraction of a second. The moment Reina said, "Professor Hawthorne, I'm hungry," he started his Mercedes and sped off without the slightest hesitation.

Dad stood rooted to the spot, clutching the ruling in his hands. His body swayed as though he could collapse at any moment.

"Dad?" I ran over to support him. "Dad, what's wrong?"

He looked at me with tears glistening in his cloudy eyes, though he refused to let them fall. "Cece… did I embarrass you?"

My tears burst forth. "N-No, of course not, Dad…"

"In that case… why won't my son-in-law acknowledge me?"

Even after I took him back to his hometown, I still couldn't answer him. For the first time in my life, I hated myself for being so powerless, and I hated myself for marrying the wrong man.

During the time we were apart, there were moments when the reality of losing me hit Clement harder than he wanted to admit. Like the moment he saw the trash can overflowing with our wedding photos and pictures of us together. Or when he pulled open the refrigerator and realized there were no more lunch boxes I had packed for him with my own hands. Every morning, he woke up to an empty space beside him, with none of my warmth or familiar scent left on the bed. His phone no longer lit up with messages from his in-laws. "Clem, it's getting cold. Remember to bundle up!""Clem, we sent you and Cece a handmade down duvet. Let me know when you receive it..." It was only then that he realized what he had lost. He also understood the reason I had been so determined to cut off the ten-year relationship between us without a second thought. "I'm so sorry. I was wrong! I was foolish and lost my head for a moment. I couldn't resist the temptation, and I ended up hurting you and your paren

"I'll represent Cece in her divorce proceedings!" The moment that voice rang out, all the professors and students seated inside the lecture hall rose to their feet. Countless law students outside the hall set their books down and crowded around the entrance until it was completely blocked. Reina blanched when she saw the two women."It's Ms. Sterling, the one and only female legend in the legal profession, who hasn't lost a single case in 30 years, and her daughter, Ms. Wilson. She became a partner at Crestline Legal Group at 24, and she's the attorney who won that high-profile child custody case!" "Ms. Sterling has been out of the spotlight for eight years and hardly ever makes a public appearance. Ms. Wilson, on the other hand, is famous for being utterly impartial. Now that the two of them are here, Clement and Reina have definitely bitten off way more than they can chew!"May helped Clarissa navigate her way to the front amid the cheers of the crowd. "Mom and I are here to su

As I took in the face that was contorted with rage before me, I realized that perhaps I had only loved Clement for such a long time because I had been wearing the rose-colored glasses of our youth. Now that those rose-colored glasses had come off, he really was no different from any other cold-hearted man. Meeting Clement's furious gaze, I let out a soft chuckle. "A man who rigs the rules and fabricates evidence to hurt others has no right to lecture me about what's illegal. I may not know the law, but I know human nature, and I know right from wrong!" I continued nonchalantly, "If you're that upset about it, why don't I call the cops on your behalf? It'll give them the chance to investigate how you colluded with a deadbeat debtor to screw Dad over. "Dad was simply attempting to recover his unpaid wages, yet you twisted the narrative on him and forced him to pay 500 grand in damages, driving him into the ICU out of sheer rage."Reina completely lost it. Clutching his sleeve, she

I chuckled and ignored Clement's warning glare. Without a moment's hesitation, I opened the file and began my presentation. "I'm Celeste Blackwood, and I'm an elementary school teacher. Truth be told, I've created countless multi-page presentations for lesson plans and parent-teacher conferences. I never thought that this time, I'd be making one packed with evidence of my husband's affair with his mistress." I watched the color drain from Clement and Reina's faces with every single word I uttered."Celeste, have you lost your mind?" Clement stared at me with a pained expression. "Are you dead set on destroying our decade-long relationship today?"Reina was so anxious her eyes misted over. "Mrs. Hawthorne, you've completely misunderstood my relationship with Professor Hawthorne. I'm begging you to stop making a scene, alright? At this rate, you're going to ruin my future!"Mrs. Hawthorne? That was the very first time I'd ever heard her address me that way. I wasn't flustered in

In an instant, the room fell pin-drop silent. Reina blanched, and she instinctively shot Clement a pleading look. "Professor Hawthorne, what... what's going on?" She probably hadn't expected me to barge in. For a moment, she was completely thrown off. Clement appeared flustered for once. "Have you lost your mind, Celeste? Reina's defending her thesis today. She has spent such a long time preparing for this. Are you trying to ruin her future?" I slowly looked up and met his gaze calmly. "What, are you feeling guilty because you've been caught red-handed? Clement, you're the one who started all this. Who are you to point fingers at me? Besides, I've already given you two plenty of chances, haven't I?" Clement was at the peak of his career at 30. However, back then, no matter how busy, exhausted, or late it was, he would always come home to spend time with me. Even if he only had a single day off, he would go shopping with me, watch movies, or take me to the countryside to relax

That night, two different teams of doctors cycled through the operating room. Mom held me and fainted from crying multiple times. Dad's condition finally stabilized when day broke. Yet, Clement never once set foot in the hospital to see him. "Cece, where's Clem? Did he not come back with you?"Dad came to on the third day. Noticing how haggard I looked, his eyes filled with heartache. "It's okay, Dad." I forced a smile. "I won't allow something like this to happen again, and I won't let anyone hurt you or Mom again."After hearing that, Mom and Dad fell silent for a long while before patting me on the shoulder. "Go ahead and do what you want to do. We'll support whatever decision you make." After stepping out of the hospital room, I called Clement again."What is it?""Mom and Dad want to see you. Plus, there's something I need to talk to you about." His voice was raspy, as though he hadn't slept all night. "Tomorrow won't do. Reina's defending her thesis tomorrow. I need
