I hated that sentence, I never heard anything good after those six words had been said. Dr Sanchez pulled out the card from earlier and let out a nervous sigh before giving it to me. I'm not heartless, I just learned how to use my heart less… FIVE YEARS LATER After an hour of sitting idle in a moving vehicle, the limo finally came to a stop in front of Italy's renowned five star hotel… Mangia's Brucoli luxury hotel, where the auction was going to take place. If it were for me, I would have never come here but Dr Sanchez was a people's person, he loved attending charity galas and always dragged me along with him. He turned to me and asked “Are you ready??” I nodded, smiling reassuringly at him. Tonight was going to be our first night being seen out in the public together since our arrival here in Italy, a week ago. Our door opened and Dr Sanchez stepped out of the car. Stopping not that far from the door, he held out his hand to me. I opened my eyes and it's like déjà vu. I groaned, blinded by the bright light shining down on me and shut them close before opening them again, this time usisng my hand as a shield. I looked around the room, confused of my whereabouts andturned my head sideways. Dr Sanchez sat in a sofa not far from the bed I was laying in, with a newspaper in his hands.“Dad??” I croaked.Looking up, he said “You're awake” his lips stretched upward in a relieved smile as he folded his paper close. I nodded, smiling back and tried to sit up straight but winced quickly dismissing the idea when a short sharp pain shot up my scalp like lightning from the back of my head. When I leave, you'll finally understand why storms are named after people.A week had gone by quicker than expected, the news of the robbery at the charity event had quickly faded into thin air and were now nothing but a rumour. As for me, my wound was healed enough… I no longer needed to wear a bandage around my head anymore. But Sadly, that also meant I now had to go on a date with Dino. Speaking of which, we went on a two hour drive to Acireale… the town I grew up in with my siblings before our parents moved us to Sicily.To make me feel and I quote “more relaxed and comfortable” on our date, Dino had decided to bring me to watch the carnival in Acireale just outside Sicily near Catania and if I were still the same girl I was five years ago… I would've been ecstatic. We all have demons, I just chose to feed mine...“Eva… Eva!!” I'm jolted out of yet another nightmare by Dr Sanchez. Gasping for air, I sat up straight and hugged him. Ignoring my sweat covered clothes, he wrapped his strong arms around my shaking body and pulled me closer. Clinging to him, I could still feel the sofa I was sleeping on spinning beneath us like I was still falling in my dream.“There there… I'm here, you're safe just breathe and everything will be alright” Dr Sanchez whispered into my ear, all the while comfortingly rubbing slow circles on my back. Listening to him, I took deep breaths of his musk. The woody scent that I had grown to like serving as a herb to calm my nerves down. I chanted in my head, the only words I'd known for the past five years… It was all a dream, a reminder of how cruel the world can be when you're poor before gently pulling back from his warm embrace.“Are you okay??” He asked, still worried.
