Chapter 1

Author: Seven Sevens
On Christmas Eve, my parents and my fiancé, Ivano Dominici, finally agree to accompany me to Iberion to see the aurora. But when I arrive there, they never show up no matter how long I wait.

I send messages to ask. They reply helplessly that something urgent has come up at the last minute and tell me to go to the observation point and wait. I stand alone on the icy field, turning back every few minutes to look at the road behind me.

When my hands grow numb from the cold, I scroll my social media feed and see a recent post from my younger sister, Giada Soave.

Holding gifts in her arms, she sits beneath a luxurious crystal Christmas tree with my parents embracing her from both sides.

Ivano stands behind her with his hand resting lightly at her waist and his eyes full of tenderness.

The caption reads, "Merry Christmas, I'm grateful to spend the holiday with those who love me most!"

The comments section buzzes with blessings, praise, and envious messages.

I stare at the screen for a long time without moving. This is not the first time they break their promise to me because of Giada.

But this time, I do not argue or make a scene.

I simply type and send one line calmly in the comments, "I wish your family of four a Merry Christmas."

I finally let go of my obsession and stop waiting for people who will never come to me.

But when I quietly step away, the ones who cannot let go turn out to be them.

...

Cristina's POV

I stood alone on the ice field until the aurora faded.

I took a flight home, and my family still wasn't back.

As soon as I took off my coat, my phone started vibrating intensely. My fiancé Ivano Dominici's name lit up the screen, sharp and glaring.

I didn't pick up right away like I usually did. Instead, I let it ring until it cut off. Only when it rang again did I slowly answer.

Before I could say anything, Ivano's slightly impatient voice came through. "Cristina Soave, can you stop trying to compete with Giada for attention? She can't handle the cold. The weather in Iberion is too much for her.

"Have you thought about how lonely she'd be spending Christmas alone? We stayed behind just to keep her company. Delete that comment now, or I won't pick you up."

Lonely?

No one knew the taste of that word better than I did.

After war broke out in the country where I was studying, Mamma begged me to drop out and return to Caldoria immediately.

That feeling never left me.

It morphed into anxiety, fear, self-doubt, and countless sleepless nights.

I looked at my cold, swollen fingers, then slowly asked, "Ivano, did you have a happy Christmas?"

Caught off guard by my response, the other end of the line went quiet.

All the lectures he'd planned were suddenly stuck in his throat.

Smiling, I said softly, "I had a happy Christmas too because I discovered a secret. The comment I wrote wasn't meant to mock you. I genuinely wish all of you well."

Without hesitation, I hung up.

The black screen reflected my face, calm and emotionless.

The secret I'd discovered was that true love didn't need to be begged for. What I begged for wasn't real love.

I exhaled into my palm, then turned and walked into the closet.

I pushed aside the luxurious dresses I'd never worn, revealing a simple suitcase in the corner.

I pulled it out and unzipped it. Inside were all my trophies, certificates of merit, and my hard-earned degrees.

I had hoped they'd be proud of me, but now… it didn't matter.

I packed my laptop and stationery. These were the only things I truly planned to take with me.

Suddenly, my phone rang again. It was Florina Cannella, my biological Mamma.

I stared at it for a moment, then let it ring until it stopped.

Next came a call from my Papa, Tatum Soave.

I declined it, then turned the phone to silent before walking into the bathroom.

Papa's message was short and commanding. As the Don of the Soave family, he was used to being obeyed.

"Giada's heart is almost giving out because of that comment of yours! Come here and apologize to Ivano now!"

I glanced at it coldly before turning off my phone.

Before I could sever ties completely, there was one last thing I had to do.

I reached into the safe in my room and pulled out two items—a Donna ring and an unlimited black bank card.

The Donna ring was worn on my finger during my engagement to Ivano, in front of both families. It was a symbol that I was to be the future Donna of the Dominici family.

The unlimited black bank card was a gift from my parents the day I returned to Caldoria.

They told me that it was a guarantee I would never be looked down on again. I had always treasured it and never used it.

I placed them side by side on the bedside table and took a photo.

Then, I opened the family group chat, where my sister, Giada Soave, was always posting selfies and interacting with them.

I tapped on the photo and sent it.

I then typed one last message in the chat. "I've never used them. You can give them to someone more suitable. From now on, I'll rely on myself."

Without any hesitation, I blocked all of their numbers. After that, I sent the evidence of the Soave family's underground casino laundering, tax evasion, and Ivano's assassination dealings to the police's email. At the same time, the confidential file about Giada's true identity was also made public.Having done all this, I took a cab to the airport. The terminal was crowded with people, but I found a corner to sit in.In my suitcase were just a few old clothes and the design drafts for "Midnight Sun".I looked down at my phone, and as expected, the internet had exploded."The Soave family is suspected of massive international money laundering and tax evasion. Tatum Soave and his wife, Florina Cannella, have been arrested. Their assets are frozen!"In the pictures, my high and mighty biological parents were shown being arrested with handcuffs, their faces a picture of disgrace.Meanwhile, forums overseas were buzzing with the revelation of Giada's true identity. When I returned to Soave Manor, the mood in the living room was just right.Mamma was trying on expensive jewelry on Giada, Papa was reading the newspaper, and Ivano was on the phone in the corner. The scene looked so warm.Frowning, Papa put down his newspaper as soon as he saw me walk in. "You finally remember that this is your home?"Mamma, on the other hand, quickly switched to a fake, concerned tone. "Cristina, where have you been these days? We've been so worried about you."Ivano hung up the phone, his face showing a trace of surprise as he took my hand. "Cristina, I knew you'd come around. Since you're done with this tantrum, just stay home now. I've kept your ring for you."I pulled my hand away and ignored him. Walking straight to the coffee table, I threw the document envelope I had been clutching onto it."What's this? How rude!" Papa's face darkened."A document."I pulled out a chair and sat down, coldly watching them. "A document about how much my life is really

The day after I received my Fennaris visa, I went back to the private investigation firm. The office windows were tightly shut. The investigator, Elmo Gullo, sat behind his desk. Wiping sweat from his forehead, he pushed a sealed document envelope toward me."Ms. Soave, investigating Mr. Dominici and the Soave family's secrets is far too dangerous. We were planning to abandon the investigation and refund you."He swallowed hard and said in a low voice, "But just last night, a top-tier hacker from overseas breached our system and sent us this confidential file."My heart skipped a beat. "A hacker from overseas?"Elmo looked at me. "The hacker had no malicious intent. They left only one message."My breath hitched.I suddenly remembered that anonymous sender. That night, when my life's work was gutted, and I was teetering on the edge of despair, they had helped me recover all the data and told me never to be confined."What did they say?" I asked.Elmo handed me a printed note

I had underestimated Ivano's methods. The next morning, just as I opened the door to my apartment, there he was. This mafia Don, with his far-reaching influence, was standing in the narrow hallway of my humble, run-down building. For the first time, there was a hint of regret on Ivano's usually composed face.He sighed lightly, then placed a bank card gently on my cheap fold-out table. His deep-set eyes were filled with indulgence, and his voice was soft enough to drown me. "Cristina, I hate seeing you suffer out here. Take this card, forget about the Fennaris project, and come home with me."I stared at the card and laughed.Even now, he still thought that money could solve everything.I looked away from the card."Ivano, I don't need your money." My voice was so calm that even I found it strange.Ivano froze for a moment, clearly not understanding my rejection. He must've been used to me carefully trying to please him.I continued, "If you really feel guilty, then please ke

Cristina's POVIvano called me more than a dozen times, but I didn't pick up.That night, to obtain the necessary family identification for my visa application, I slipped back into Soave Manor under the cover of darkness. The living room lights were dimmed.Just as I reached the shadowed entrance, I heard a loud crash from inside. A thick folder was slammed onto the table.Ivano stood with his back to me, radiating fury.Giada, who had been lying on the couch scrolling through her phone, jumped at the sudden noise. When she saw the screenshots scattered across the table, her face drained of color."These are your dark web hire records and overseas account transfers."Ivano's voice was icy. "Giada, who gave you the nerve to pull these underhanded tricks right under my nose to ruin Cristina's future?""Ivano… I…" Giada's lips trembled violently, and her eyes reddened instantly.Ivano didn't say a single word. He simply stared at her, his gaze as cold as if she were a stranger.

Third-person POVThe night after Cristina received the anonymous email, Ivano sat at the head of a private room in an upscale club on the outskirts of the city, casually sipping his drink and making small talk.Odorico Dante, a partner on the Fennaris project, approached with his own glass and clinked it against Ivano's."Mr. Dominici, you truly have some remarkable talent around you. Just the other day, I saw the design sketch posted by Ms. Giada Soave. The Soave family sure has put a lot of effort into nurturing her. Even her casual sketches have a certain charm."Ivano took a sip of his drink calmly. "She just does it to pass the time. She's not a professional designer.""Of course. She's the Principessa, after all. As long as she's happy." Odorico laughed, agreeing. Then, he swiftly changed the subject. This time, his tone was more excited. "But speaking of real professional designers, we've unexpectedly recruited a rare genius for our overseas project today!"Ivano didn't l
