Chapter 355

Aвтор: Maureen Green
Just then, Chester walked in. "Aspen, I have some news, though I'm not sure if I should tell you."

"What is it?" Aspen asked.

He explained, "I heard that Colin hasn't been in a good mood lately, and he's making a mess of things at the company. He seems to be pushing all the blame onto you."

Aspen said flatly, "Let him say what he wants. I have nothing to hide and don't fear him slandering me."

"But I also heard he's been drinking heavily lately, and his health is deteriorating," Chester continued.

Aspen felt a slight twinge in her heart, but she quickly suppressed the feeling. She simply said, "That's his business. It has nothing to do with me."

Chester nodded. "You're right. We should just focus on our own affairs."

...

In Colin's office, he was yelling furiously into his phone. "Useless! You're all useless! You couldn't even handle such a simple project—what good are any of you?"

He hung up and slammed his phone onto the desk.

After a while, Gwyneth walked through the door

"I didn't want to distract you. You've been under so much pressure already," Aren said gently. He reached for her hand, only for Aspen to subtly pull away. His expression faltered for just a moment, but he quickly regained composure.Aspen dabbed the corner of her mouth with a napkin, then took a slow sip of wine. "How much more are you keeping from me? Your real background? Your family connections?"Aren set his fork and knife down, his expression turning unreadable. "Pen, are you asking all this because someone's trying to turn you against me?""Don't dodge the question, Aren," Aspen replied, her voice calm but unyielding. "I just want the truth."He looked at the woman he loved, struggling inwardly. "Yes, there are things I haven't told you. But it's not because I don't trust you." "Then why?""Because some of it is… complicated. And if I told you everything, it might put you in danger," Aren said, his voice dropping.Aspen let out a quiet, bitter laugh. "So you're protecti

By the time Aspen returned to her apartment, the sky was already dark. She was overwhelmed with exhaustion from the endless meetings, the suspicious stares, and the whispers behind her back. She reached for her keys, but just as she unlocked the door, the familiar sound of clattering pans echoed from inside.A warm, savory aroma drifted out, rich and comforting, like the smell of home.Aspen pushed the door open and froze in surprise.Aren was in the kitchen, wearing an apron and focused on searing a thick cut of steak. Several elegant side dishes had already been plated beside him, and the table was set with two lit candles and a decanter of red wine waiting to be poured."You're back?" she asked, setting her bag down, her voice laced with disbelief.Aren turned around, still holding a spatula in one hand, and gave her a warm smile. "I wrapped things up with my family and rushed back to cook dinner for you. I wanted it to be a surprise. I just didn't think you'd be working so l

"It's nothing, just thinking through some work issues," Aspen said with a faint smile, hiding the storm behind her calm expression."If there's anything I can help with, just say the word," Riley offered gently."Thank you. I will," Aspen replied softly, though her mind remained troubled. Her time in the corporate world had sharpened her instincts, and they were now warning her that Aren was hiding something. After a moment of hesitation, Riley spoke again. "Mr. Fuller came by earlier. He was in the employee lounge for quite a while."Aspen looked up sharply. "Why was he here?""I'm not sure, but after he left, people started talking," Riley whispered. "It's about Mr. Jefferson."Aspen's hand froze mid-motion. "What are they saying?" "They're saying Mr. Jefferson might have a hidden agenda. That he's backed by some mysterious financial group trying to gain control of our company."Aspen let out a cold laugh. "It's just gossip, that's all. Don't bother with it. Riley, go ahead

Aspen sat in her office, surrounded by towering stacks of paperwork waiting for her signature. With the press conference fast approaching, she needed to comb through every detail to ensure nothing slipped through the cracks."Riley, double-check the finance sheets again. I don't want a single error tomorrow.""Yes, Ms. Nicholls," Riley replied quickly, jotting it down before heading out.Aspen leaned back in her chair and massaged her temples, trying to ease the dull throb that had been building since the board meeting ended. She had been working nonstop for over ten hours. Aren hadn't returned after leaving hurriedly the night before. He had only sent a text saying that his family situation was complicated and would take some time to resolve. Just then, the computer notification chimed. It was another new email. The sender was listed only as "Someone Who Cares" with no specific name. Aspen frowned and was about to delete it, but her finger stopped just before hitting the del

"I'll be back as soon as I'm done. It won't take long," Aren promised, resting his hand gently on her shoulder. "There's fruit in the fridge. Make sure you eat them."His voice was as tender as always, but Aspen caught a rare undercurrent of tension in it. "It's fine. Go on. Don't keep Mr. Jefferson Senior waiting," she said, offering a calm smile.Aren grabbed his coat and cast one last look at the table, where steam was still rising from the dinner they hadn't finished. The reluctance was clear in his eyes. "I'll be back soon," he said one last time, then turned and left with Bianca. The sound of the door closing echoed louder than usual in the quiet apartment.Aspen drummed her fingers against the table and muttered to herself. Aren had never gone into detail about his time overseas, nor had he ever truly opened up about his family's background. She only knew from scattered conversations that he came from a rather traditional family, and he seemed to have some kind of rif

Aren's voice was low and gentle, carrying a quiet promise that left no room for refusal. The warm kitchen light cast soft shadows across his face, outlining the sharp lines of his features.Aspen looked down at the bracelet around her wrist. The silver glimmered under the light, shifting with a subtle glow as she gently rubbed the delicate clasp with her fingertip. She asked, "Does this bracelet have any other secrets?"Aren paused before giving a small nod. "There's something stored inside... Things I want you to know, but I can't talk about them yet."That caught Aspen's attention. She looked up and pressed him, "What things?"However, Aren simply shook his head and brushed his fingers gently across the inside of her wrist. He simply said, "When the time's right, I'll tell you everything. For now, let's eat." He skillfully changed the subject while picking up his fork to serve her a piece of fish. "Try this. I specially chose the freshest salmon."Aspen let him change the subj
