Morning light slipped through the narrow windows of the east wing chambers, pale and cold. Caelian woke slowly, the way he always did, careful, listening first. For a long second he thought he was still dreaming. A heavy arm was draped across his waist. Warm breath stirred the hair at the back of his neck. The solid heat of another body pressed against his back.

His eyes opened fully.

Ravyn.

The king was still asleep, or at least pretending to be. His face looked younger without the usual hard

Roshan had stopped pretending the visits were casual. At first he had spaced them out, a few days in the demon realm, a short appearance in Eldoria under the cover of some vague errand, then a quiet disappearance before questions could form. That fiction had worn thin. Now he crossed into the mortal palace most evenings, sometimes earlier when the pressure on the other side became too much. Before each crossing he did the same small working: a press of will, a brief distortion of light and perception, and the single horn vanished from sight. To any ordinary human eye he looked like a tall, sharp featured man in a dark coat, unusual, perhaps, but not impossible. Only the handful of people who already knew what he was could still sense the truth under the glamour. Everyone else simply saw a private guest of the crown and knew better than to ask too many questions. The household guards stationed near Garrick’s block had grown used to the quiet figure who appeared in the upper corridors a

The pregnancy had begun to show in earnest. What had been a slight softening at Caelian’s lower stomach weeks earlier was now a clear, rounded curve that no amount of careful tailoring fully hid. The formal clothes made for the birthday elevation already sat differently across his frame. Soft robes and looser tunics had become the default inside the royal wing. Maids moved through the private chambers with an almost exaggerated quiet. The household had adjusted around the visible fact of the queen’s condition the way it adjusted around any major change in the palace, with attention, caution, and a steady stream of unnecessary cushions. The symptoms had changed with the shape. The earlier waves of nausea had settled into something more manageable, but everything else had sharpened. Caelian cried at almost anything. A letter from a border lord phrased too coldly. A maid setting a cup down too hard. The wrong texture of bread. Once he had stared at a pair of his own old boots left nea

“I have an announcement to make.” The great hall held its quiet. Hundreds of faces remained turned toward the high table. Candlelight caught on jewelry and polished metal. Somewhere near the far doors a servant froze with a pitcher still in hand. Ravyn stood with one hand resting on the back of Caelian’s chair, the other loose at his side, and looked out over the gathered courts of Eldoria and its watching guests as if the next words had been waiting in him for a long time. “Most of you know the history of my marriage,” he began. His voice carried without strain. “It was made by treaty and sealed by blood when I was not yet ready to understand what I had been given. I spent years treating that bond as a chain. I was wrong. The man beside me endured those years without becoming cruel in return. He stayed. He survived attempts on his life, on his place, and on the future we are now building. He has given this kingdom a stability I once thought I would have to force at the edge of a bl

The idea settled in Ravyn’s mind three nights after the Marenhold carriages rolled out of the gates and refused to leave. Caelian’s birthday fell at the end of the following week. In previous years the day had been marked with little more than a quiet meal and a gift given in private, a consequence of the old coldness between them and the court’s habit of treating the consort as an awkward political fact rather than a person worth celebrating. That version of the day was no longer acceptable. Ravyn wanted the capital, the court, and every watching foreign seat to understand exactly where Caelian stood. Not as a tolerated treaty spouse. Not as a temporary arrangement. As his queen. The distinction mattered. In Eldoria the title of consort had always carried a lesser weight. Elevating Caelian to queen would place him equal in rank, equal in protection, and equal in the line of the realm’s public honour. It would also make the unborn child the undeniable heir of two bloodlines. Ravyn i

The morning the Marenhold party was due to leave dawned clear and cool. Gifts had been prepared the night before, fine cloth, a set of worked silver, a sealed letter of continued trade goodwill that Ravyn had signed with the kind of careful politeness reserved for allies who had overstayed their welcome. The packages sat near the doors of the smaller dining room where breakfast had been laid. King Aldric and Princess Seraphine arrived on time, dressed for travel. Their twenty guards waited in the outer courtyard with the carriages. The atmosphere at the table was formally correct and quietly strained. No one mentioned the dining room confrontation or the garden exchange. Everyone at the table remembered both. Caelian sat at Ravyn’s right. A simple bowl of plain rice and a cup of weak tea had been placed in front of him, the only things his stomach had been reliably accepting for days. Ravyn’s attention was divided between his guests and the way Caelian’s hand rested lightly against

Evening had settled properly over Eldoria Palace by the time the air in one of the upper corridors folded open. Roshan stepped through without ceremony, the crease between worlds sealing behind him as if it had never been there. He was humming under his breath, some old border tune that had no business sounding cheerful in a human fortress, and walking with his hands in the pockets of a dark coat that looked almost ordinary until the light caught the edges wrong. The household guards stationed along the hall glanced up, registered the hum and the familiar face, and returned to their posts without challenge. Word had already gone around weeks ago: the consort’s kin came and went as they pleased. No one who valued their continued ability to stand upright tried to stop them. He was halfway down the corridor when a woman swept past him in the opposite direction. Princess Seraphine of Marenhold looked furious. Her jaw was tight, her eyes hard, and the controlled elegance she usually wor
