Chapter 3

작가: Andy
Too late.

The two hot-tempered Dons had already assembled their forces and were heading straight for Garcia territory.

Each one thought Garcia was backing the other, and each planned to wipe out the alliance at the source.

This was exactly what Garcia wanted.

Leon and I rushed to meet up and raced to the Garcia underground casino.

By the time we got there, the casino was already in chaos.

The Garcias had both Dons' forces pinned down in a dead end.

Snipers were positioned all around.

Victor Garcia, head of the family, laughed maniacally.

"Cosimo, Romanov, you've been at each other's throats for twenty years. Today, you both die here!"

He waved his hand.

"Open fire!"

At the last possible second, Leon and I charged in with our people.

I led a team to break through from the left flank while Leon flanked from the right.

Through the hail of bullets, I spotted my father and Dmitri crouching behind the same card table.

Vittorio and Dmitri were still screaming at each other.

"You old bastard! Did you set me up with Garcia?"

"Bullshit! Your men are the ones ambushing us!"

I tossed a smoke grenade their way.

"Dad! Stop arguing! Move!"

Leon was yelling at Dmitri too.

"Dad! Over here!"

The scene was absolute chaos.

Leon and I had a decision to make.

If we rescued both fathers at the same time, our cover would be blown.

Garcia's firepower was too heavy. We each had to cover our own father's retreat.

During the retreat, one of Garcia's men lobbed a grenade.

It landed right between the two Dons.

Leon threw himself at my father without hesitation and tackled him to the ground.

I kicked over a slot machine and shielded Dmitri behind it.

Boom!

The blast was deafening.

The smoke cleared.

My father was untouched, just struggling to breathe under Leon's weight.

Dmitri was shielded by the slot machine, with only a scrape on his leg.

Each Don stared at the enemy's child who had just saved him. Neither knew what to make of it.

We made it out safely.

Leon and I immediately launched into damage control.

I jabbed a finger at Leon's face.

"What were you doing running around like that? You almost got my father killed!"

Leon fired right back.

"What do you know? If I hadn't reacted fast enough, your father would've been blown to pieces!"

"And you! What was that with the slot machine? You nearly broke my father's legs!"

In front of everyone, we argued viciously.

But my father's eyes had lost a few shades of their usual murderous edge when he looked at Leon.

Dmitri no longer looked at me like he was sizing up a corpse.

Neither would admit it out loud, but they both knew perfectly well that if it hadn't been for the other man's child, they'd be dead.

The ambush shifted something in both Dons.

They were still trading insults, but when it came to dealing with Garcia territory, they started cooperating without a word.

Leon and I seized the opportunity to go back to the casino ruins.

In the safe inside Victor's office, we found a top-secret file.

It was the complete record of the case from twenty years ago.

It turned out that neither family had double-crossed the other.

Garcia had bought off high-ranking insiders in both the Cosimo and Romanov families.

The two moles had each forged their boss's orders, creating the illusion of a mutual massacre.

I stared at the two forged orders in the file.

"These used encryption keys that only the top brass of both families would know."

Leon's face went pale.

"That means the moles are real, and they're probably still alive, right under our noses."

The last page of the file was missing. The moles' identities had been erased.

Leon held the documents, visibly agitated.

"This is enough! We show this to our fathers. Prove the whole thing was a setup."

"Then we can finally be together, out in the open!"

I snatched the file from him.

"No! The moles are still out there. Going public now is too dangerous."

Leon snapped.

"Sylvia, what are you so afraid of?"

"Do you even want to go public? Are you still suspecting my family?"

I took a deep breath, forcing my temper down.

"I'm not suspecting you. But if we don't flush out the moles, they could set up another trap and get our people killed."

Leon laughed bitterly.

"Excuses. You just think the Cosimo family is above everyone else. You look down on me."

I was trembling with fury.

"Leon, you bastard!"

We had a massive fight in the ruins and stormed off in opposite directions.

One year after the wedding. The Cosimo and Romanov families had fully merged, jointly running the largest port operation on the West Coast. But to outsiders, Leon and I still looked like we wanted to tear each other apart. At today's family council meeting, I'd gotten into yet another screaming match with Leon over a new shipping route."This route will be managed by the Cosimo side!" I slammed the table."Not a chance. The Romanov side has invested more resources into this line!" Leon shot back, stone-faced.By the end of the argument, I slammed the door behind me and stormed out.Leon followed right behind. We marched one after the other, radiating fury, straight into that same old shipping container at Pier Seven. The door clanged shut. The men outside tensed up immediately.Loud banging echoed from inside the container, along with my muffled gasps.A new recruit panicked, drew his gun, and started toward the container."Should we go in and help Mr. Romanov? "My daughter is the pride of the Cosimo family. She's not giving up her name! Leon can become a Cosimo!" My father pounded the table so hard the coffee cups rattled.Dmitri didn't budge an inch. "In your dreams! My son is the sole heir of the Romanov family. Sylvia will become a Romanov!""Leon takes the Cosimo name! We can take care of him!""Sylvia takes the Romanov name! She'll want for nothing!"The two Dons were screaming at each other in the Cosimo living room, spit flying. When neither could win the surname argument, they moved on to the wedding venue."The wedding has to be at the Cosimo estate! I want the whole world to see my daughter's big day!""Absolutely not! It has to be at the Romanov five-star hotel! The Romanov reputation is on the line!"After the venue, they fought over the unborn children."The first child takes the Cosimo name! They inherit the Cosimo legacy!""Why should they? When the Garcias discovered their mole had been caught, they knew the game was up.They prepared to flee from Pier Seven with the last batch of ledgers and arms."Left side is mine, right side is yours." I drew my gun and chambered a round."I'll handle the heavy fire in the middle." Leon kissed my forehead. "Be careful."The fight erupted.Leon and I stood back to back, coordinating both families' younger generation through our earpieces."Cosimo team one, flank from the side! Cut off their retreat!""Romanov snipers, three o'clock! Take out that machine gunner!"The two families had spent years fighting each other. Now, fighting together, they were surprisingly in sync.Gunfire and explosions tore through the night sky.Victor's men gave ground inch by inch as we drove them toward the edge of the pier.I'd just taken down two attackers rushing me when I saw, up ahead, my father and Dmitri pinned down in a fierce firefight. The enemy's fire was too heavy. Once they learned how long we'd been together, both fathers skipped right past the question of whether they approved."Don Cosimo, your daughter is something else. She's got my son wrapped around her finger!" Dmitri pointed a finger at me.My father smacked his hand away. "Don't flatter your boy. Leon's the one who stuck to my daughter like a leech! She's the one who got the raw end of this deal!""Raw end? My son is the sole heir to the Romanov family. He could have any woman he wanted. Your daughter should consider herself lucky he even noticed her!""In his dreams! The men lining up for my daughter would stretch from the East Coast to the West Coast! Your son doesn't even rank!"The two Dons stood right there in front of everyone, going at each other like a pair of barroom brawlers. The mole thrashed in the corner, desperately trying to get their attention.Leon walked over and took my hand like it was the most natural thing in the world."What now?" he asked quietly."Business firs

"Sylvia!" My father was the first to react, crossing the room in three strides. He seized my wrist and pulled me behind him.Dmitri wasn't far behind, grabbing Leon by the collar and hauling him away."What the hell are you doing?" Both Dons roared in perfect unison.I wiped the scraped corner of my lip. Before I could say a word, my father had already drawn his gun, aiming it right between Leon's eyes."I knew it!" My father's entire body shook with rage. "Not a single decent person in the Romanov family!"At those words, Dmitri immediately pulled his gun and leveled it at me."That's rich! Did that woman seduce you?" Dmitri barked at Leon. "Have you lost your mind? A Cosimo? Are you tired of living?"The two patriarchs hurled accusations back and forth while their men raised weapons all around. The room was a heartbeat away from a bloodbath.Leon reached up and wiped the lipstick from the corner of his mouth, his eyes fixed on me.I held his gaze and drew a deep breath."I made the f

The cold war began. For three days straight, neither of us said a word to the other. On the fourth day, my father summoned me to the living room."Sylvia, you're not getting any younger. It's time to think about settling down."He handed me a photograph."This is Matteo Bellini, the son of a casino mogul. You're having dinner with him tonight at the Peninsula Hotel."I was about to say no, but then Leon's stupid, punchable face flashed through my mind.I clenched my jaw."Fine.
