Tori

The guest pass has been burning a hole in my jacket for two weeks, and today it earns its keep.

Fourteen days.

That was the deal I made with myself in front of a coffee shop, and my brother has spent all fourteen of them dodging me.

Three texts, ignored.

The barn, bailed on repeatedly.

One phone call that lasted ninety seconds and contained the word "busy" four times, which is a record even for the new and unimproved Noah.

So. Time's up. Surveillance phase over. Contact phase initiated.

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 74 – Load-Bearing Wall

DaxNoah's breathing changes first.I'm standing in his kitchen with my arms full of hunter, wrung out from the longest night of my life, and against all medical advice my body picks now to notice that he's warm and pressed against every inch of my front. Then his scent shifts. The cedar goes syrupy at the edges, honey creeping in underneath, and my exhaustion packs a bag and leaves without giving notice.'Finally,' the wolf says. 'He watched us open every door we had and he stayed. I want him screaming our name by sunrise.'Sunrise was twenty minutes ago.'Then we're already late.'Noah tips his head back. His eyes have gone dark green and heavy-lidded, and there's a flush crawling up his throat that I want to chase with my tongue."We should sleep," he says."Absolutely.""Big day. War starting. Responsibilities.""Huge day."My hands have moved to his hips without consulting me."Enormous.""So why are you looking at my mouth?""You started it. Your scent's been making promises for

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 73 – The Third Door

Noah"You gonna come in, or should I bring the kitchen out here?"He's standing on my top step with his hand still raised, caught mid-knock like the door cheated. It did.Me and the door have been ready for hours. His clothes are wrong.Same ones as last night, but they've been through something, and there's dried blood down his forearm with no cut under it."Hey," he says."Hey."Neither of us moves.I’ve been up since he left, drank a whole pot of coffee at three like a genius, rehearsed being calm so many times the word stopped meaning anything. Now he's here and my heart starts carrying on like it's got somewhere urgent to be.Even in shambles he's stupidly good to look at.Unhelpful information. Noted anyway."Noah. I..."He stops. Looks like he’s going to start again. Stops before anything comes out.Whatever he practiced in the truck just died on my doormat."Inside."I step back to let him past."This isn't a doorway conversation."He walks into my kitchen and doesn't sit.Doe

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 72 – The Whisper

DaxThe alley door of Vintage opens before my knuckles touch it."You're late," Maxim says, "Which I'll forgive, and you smell like wet dog and gasoline, which I won't.""Lovely to see you too.""It's four in the morning, puppy. Not even creatures of the night enjoy this hour."He steps back to let me in."Your cargo?""In the truck. With someone I trust. You get me first."Something crosses his face at that, quick and entertained."Words some people would pay to hear, but I’m really not interested. I’m afraid you’ll have to settle for your hunter."The wolf has me baring my teeth at the insult to Noah and Maxim chuckles as he turns his back on me nonchalantly.“You really make it too easy.”The bar's empty and half dark, chairs up, one lamp burning at the corner table. There's a pocket watch lying on a green cloth under it, taken apart into about forty pieces, tiny screwdrivers lined up in size order. So that's what two hundred and twenty years of free evenings looks like.Good to kn

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 71 – The One That Got Taken

DaxHe shifts back the second Mato sets him down on the garage floor, like the wolf shape is a coat he can't get off fast enough. And then he's a person.Naked, filthy, folded into the corner between the workbench and the wall, arms over his head, shaking so hard his teeth are rattling. And I know him.I never met him, but that doesn't matter.I had my nose on his trail for a whole night, months ago, following it across a gas station lot to a fence where it stopped dead under fresh tire rubber, and I never lost it.Some trails you close the file on. That one stayed open in my nose.Cody Brandt.Nineteen.Locked up the station at one in the morning and never made it home.'Oh,' the wolf says, and nothing else. He's got nothing. Neither do I.We looked for this guy.His face was on the community board for weeks. And the whole time he must have been trapped somewhere, being turned into the thing shivering on my garage floor."Cody."He flinches at the name like it hit him."Nobody here i

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 70 – Handle With Care

Dax"I promise."It's out of my mouth before the smart half of me finishes voting.Noah blinks. He came in loaded for a long fight, and the yes got there first."Just like that?""Just like that. Don't make me repeat it, it nearly took my head off on the way out."'Good,' the wolf says, and lies down for a nice little nap, like all our problems are fixed now."Okay," Noah says, quieter than I think he meant it to come out."Okay? I hand over the biggest thing I've got and I get okay?""You get okay tonight."Something crosses his face, fast, there and gone."You get the rest when you keep it."“Not even a little hint about what it is I’ll be getting? Will it leave marks?”He shakes his head at me, then picks the chili back up like we didn't just rearrange my entire future. That's Noah for you. Detonate, then snack. Here's what I'm not telling him.It wasn’t hard.I braced for it to cost me something, because I’m basically promising to put him ahead of the pack.Ahead of everything. An

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 69 – Live Cargo

Dax"Run it again," Finn says."The part where you pull a panicking wolf out of a moving line without killing him or getting killed by the others.""I hit the last one after the line clears the bend. You're between me and the rest of them, making yourself enormous. Reena's on the west bank keeping an eye out in case she’s needed. Mato stays downwind, ready to join the party if it’s clear everything’s going to shit.""And the wolf you're sitting on politely agrees not to chew through his own tongue.""That part's still in development.""Great plan. Airtight.""You're welcome to improve it.""I'm marinating."We're at my kitchen table with a map of the area pulled up on my phone, the quarry road a pale scar through all that green.Finn has eaten all four of the chocolate bars he brought for me.'Finally,' the wolf says, pacing. 'Months of strangers crossing our ground and we get to put one on the dirt. Take the big one at the front.'We're taking the last one. We don’t want all the othe

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 6 – Tells

DaxThe thing's in pieces at our feet and my body's still waiting for round two.I never come down off a kill clean. My blood's still up, ears still straining, every muscle still voting to hit something else.I don’t think it’s a werewolf thing. It’s an adrenaline thing. So when the wolf decides to

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 5 – Carrion

NoahThe wolf hits it like a truck, and the thing barely rocks.Wrong.Two hundred pounds of Alpha at a dead run should fold anything with a spine. This rotten thing takes the hit, slides back a boot-length in the dirt, and swings an arm the size of my leg.The wolf has to wrench sideways midair to

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 2 – Heel

DaxThe wolf wants to turn around. He's wanted to turn around since I cleared the fence, and he isn't being quiet about it, because quiet isn't a thing he owns.He just keeps shoving the same word into the back of my skull like a toddler with a doorbell.Ours.Ours, ours, ours."He's a hunter," I t

  • Knotting the Hunter   Chapter 1 – Sight Picture

NoahThree weeks I've been hunting this wolf, and tonight, finally, he does me the courtesy of holding still long enough to kill.Big of him. He's at the tree line where Northgate's fence gives up and the real woods start, and he's shirtless.Obviously. He almost always is.Cold's got nothing to sa
