“Tell me exactly who was in that corridor.”

The whisper cut cleanly through the upbeat bossa nova jazz. A white-gloved waiter slipped past them, silently sweeping Rafael Navarro’s sweating mojito glass off the high-top table, but Diego didn’t blink. His heavy, bandaged hand remained anchored to the curve of Isabella’s waist, his thumb moving slowly against the black silk as though he had all the time in the world.

Isabella let out a short, sharp sniff and lifted her right

  • LA DOCTORA    He almost found out

The back door of the center SUV was pushed open. Diego Vargas stepped out into the thick smoke. He did not look like the cold, untouchable CEO who ran a billion-dollar company. His expensive dark suit jacket was flying open in the wind. His tie was gone. The top buttons of his shirt were undone, and his chest was heaving. His face was tight with raw panic. "Isabella!" Diego shouted, his voice tearing over the noise of the idling engines. "Mister Vargas, please wait by the car," the Deputy Chief said, holding his hands out. "We are still clearing the area—" Diego ignored the gold badge. He walked straight past the Deputy Chief, his dark eyes scanning the broken glass and flashing police lights. "Boss, the lobby is not secure!" one of his security men said, running up to his side.

  • LA DOCTORA    They came for the doctor

The deafening, high-low wail of a Dallas PD siren shattered the quiet of the stairwell. Outside the wire-reinforced window, tires screeched against the asphalt. Bright, erratic flashes of red and blue light flooded through the glass, strobing across Mateo's face. Mateo took a sharp step backward. He reached for the zipper of his cheap gray windbreaker, pulling it up to his collar to conceal his tarnished silver badge. He backed toward the heavy steel fire door leading to the back alley, resting his hand flat on the red metal crash bar. "Wait," Isabella gasped, her hand instinctively flying to her fleece pocket. Her bloody fingers clamped over the rigid plastic of the DEA dongle. "Mateo, you cannot leave me in here with this." "Tuesday night, Izzy," Mateo commanded over the rising shriek of the sirens. "The building is locked down!" Isabella shouted, stepping toward him. She pointed down at her ruined, blood-s

Mateo didn't wait for the shock of the federal indictment to paralyze her. He reached across the concrete landing, his thick fingers locking brutally onto the shoulder of Isabella's fleece jacket. "Look at it," Mateo commanded. His voice wasn't a cold federal bark anymore; it was a gritty, bitter scrape in the echoing stairwell. He wrenched her forward, shoving her upper body against the heavy steel fire door. Isabella let out a sharp gasp, her blood slicked palms instinctively flying up to brace her fall. They slapped flat against the narrow, wire reinforced glass window, leaving thick, crimson handprints smeared across the pane. "Look out the window, Izzy," Mateo hissed, stepping directly behind her. Isabella stared through the smeared glass. The Dallas street three stories below was a fractured nightmare. The burning chassis of the armored SUV roared, throwing a violent, flickering orange glare over the pavement. The

Mateo's fingers dug into the nylon collar of Isabella's fleece jacket. He threw his weight backward, dragging her out of the toxic smoke and into the dark, wet shadows of the hospital's service alley. Isabella's rubber soles skidded over the glass-covered asphalt as she fought for balance. "You are killing him!" Isabella screamed over the deafening crackle of the burning SUV. She planted her feet hard, twisting her shoulder to break his grip. She pointed a shaking, blood-soaked finger back toward the street. "His airway is collapsing! Let me go back!" "Keep walking," Mateo barked. He didn't look back at the smoke. He grabbed her by the bicep, shoving her toward a heavy, unmarked steel emergency door set flush into the brick wall. "You're a federal agent!" Isabella shouted, her voice cracking as she clawed at his wrist with her slick, crimson fingers. "That is a civilian dying on the pavement!" "That is a Castillo cartel foot soldier," Mateo fired back, his jaw locking into a rig

  • LA DOCTORA    you are my asset

A sharp, burning cramp locked the muscles in Isabella's forearms. She knelt on the glass-covered asphalt, her bare knees soaked through with cold water and civilian blood. She drove the heels of her hands upward into the hinges of an unresponsive man's jaw, forcing his mouth open to keep his tongue from collapsing into his windpipe. Thick, toxic black smoke rolled across the street, stinging her eyes. "Connor!" Isabella screamed over the deafening wail of an approaching firetruck. "I am losing his airway! Hand me a Mac Three blade and a seven-point-zero tube!" Connor dropped to his knees on the opposite side of the dying man. He grabbed the heavy red trauma bag, his blood-slicked hands ripping the zipper open. He shoved both hands inside, digging through the compartments. A handful of empty plastic wrappers and a discarded roll of medical tape flew onto the wet pavement. "Connor! The tube!" Isabella barked. Her fingers slipped against the dying man's jaw. The tips of her purple

  • LA DOCTORA    The hospital wasn't the target

The heat radiating off the burning SUV baked the cold water from Isabella's scrubs in seconds. Thick, oily black smoke rolled across the pavement, stinging her eyes. She stepped off the curb, her sneakers crunching over a carpet of shattered glass. "Help! Somebody, please!" The frantic scream came from the shadows between two parked cars. A woman in a torn cocktail dress was sobbing over a man thrashing on the asphalt. A pulsing pool of dark arterial blood was rapidly expanding across the street from a deep shrapnel laceration in his thigh. Isabella dropped to her knees directly into the puddle of blood. "Hold his shoulders down," Isabella commanded, her voice cutting sharply through the woman's screams. She slammed her bare hands directly into the man's torn flesh, her thumbs digging into the femoral artery to pinch off the flow. "He's bleeding out!" the woman shrieked, her hands hovering uselessly in the air. "I said hold his shoulders down!" Isabella barked, her dark eyes fl
