He gave her a startled look. Dea understood him too well. His silence had been his way of protecting his family from a disgusting truth.
“The less they know, the better.”
She stroked his clenched hand.
“What happened that made you hate the dark?”
“I know the dangers that the night holds.”

“But it’s nothing to what the darkness had revealed inside me.”

Dea wrapped the plaid around her and leaned back in her chair and looked outside the window of her apartment. She had always enjoyed New York City in the autumn but lately, she had struggled to see the beauty. There was a crisp bite to the late October weather and the leaves were turning crimson and gold, but all she wanted to do was stay in her apartment, behind those walls, and just sleep... Once she got back to the States, the first days were excruciating. Dea experienced a level of physical and emotional pain she’s never experienced before. All she could think was Theo’s last words to her… ‘Get the fuck out of my life!’ She kept hearing those harsh words, awake or in her dreams, like a bad kind of mantra or something. Dea clenched the banister and slowly descended the grand staircase of the Kralidis estate. Holiday decorations swathed the limestone walls and the tallest, fattest Christmas tree sat in the center of the entrance hall. She heard a harp being played in the music room and watched the other guests stand around and chat as they drank the finest champagne. Her silver dress sparkled under the chandeliers but, for so many reasons, she wasn’t in a festive mood. She pressed her lips as she searched from right to left, the well-dressed crowd. Her heart stopped and she jolted with surprise when she saw Theo. His dark hair was recently cut and ruthlessly tamed, emphasizing the sleek shape of his head. Theo’s angular jaw was clean-shaven and his dark suit fitted his sleek, athletic body. Theo successfully tamed the wildness within. He was now a commanding presence, a man who ruled all he could see. The party had drifted into the music room. Theo searched the crowd that had already broken into the usual groups and cliques. The older generation was on one side of the room while the younger relatives were sitting together and checking their phones. Theo struggled to remain upright as he drew in a shallow breath. He was bringing an innocent child into this cruel and dangerous world. Dea lowered her gaze and turned her head to the side.“I… I was going to tell you.” Theo doubted it. If the nurse hadn’t mentioned the due date, he may never have known. The possibility sent a chill down his spine. She would have kept him away from his child.“When did you find out?” he asked in a snarl. She swallowed hard and pressed her lips together. When Theo thought he was going to have to shake the truth out of her, Dea quietly responded.“I found out six weeks ago.” He gripped the side of the bed tighter as the white-hot anger spread inside him.
