Chapter 4: The Blind Date Ambush

last update publish date: 2026-02-14 22:45:17

Two weeks.

Two weeks of dodging Ryan’s calls. Two weeks of watching clients ghost me. Two weeks of Mia threatening to expose Ryan on her blog while I beg her not to.

Two weeks of Adrian Knight’s assistant leaving voicemails I delete without calling back.

“Zara, you’re coming to dinner tonight.”

My mother’s voice isn’t asking.

“Mom, I have a deadline…”

“You always have a deadline. This is important. A family friend wants to discuss a potential business opportunity with you.”

I pause, paintbrush hovering over the fabric sample I’m working on. “What kind of business opportunity?”

“Interior design, what else? He’s opening a new hotel chain and needs someone creative.” She sounds pleased with herself. “I told him all about your work. He’s very interested.”

My chest tightens with hope I can’t afford to feel. A hotel chain. Multiple projects. Exactly what I need to rebuild after losing Morrison.

“What’s his name?”

“Does it matter? Just be at Lombardi’s at seven. Wear something nice.”

She hangs up before I can ask more questions.

Lombardi’s. The Italian restaurant in Manhattan that costs more for one meal than my weekly grocery budget. Family friend with a hotel chain who wants to meet me specifically.

This feels too good to be true.

But I’m desperate enough not to care.

-----

I arrive at Lombardi’s at 6:58, wearing my one professional dress that didn’t cost three paychecks. Navy blue with a structured blazer.

The hostess greets me. “Ms. Bennett? Right this way.”

She leads me past tables of people who belong here, to a private booth in the back.

My steps slow.

This doesn’t look like a business dinner.

Adrian Knight sits in the booth, perfectly composed in a dark suit. His eyes meet mine, and something flickers across his face.

I stop walking.

“There’s been a mistake,” I say. “I’m supposed to meet…”

“A family friend,” Adrian finishes. “About a business opportunity.”

This is a setup. My mother set me up on a blind date with Adrian Knight.

Adrian stands. “Please. Sit.”

“I should go.”

“Or you could sit and let me explain before you run.”

I sit.

“Let me guess,” I say. “Your family arranged this too.”

“My grandmother. She and your mother met at some charity luncheon.” A slight smile touches his lips. “Apparently, we’re both disappointing for being single.”

A waiter appears. Adrian orders for both of us without asking. I’m too off balance to care.

When the waiter leaves, Adrian leans forward. “I didn’t arrange this dinner. But I’m not surprised we’re here.”

“Why not?”

“Because my grandmother is strategic. And because I’ve been trying to contact you for two weeks.”

“About what?”

“About Ryan Carter damaging your business. About you losing Morrison because of his rumors.”

Heat floods my face. “How do you know about Morrison?”

“I make it my business to know things.” He takes a sip of wine. “Especially when my employees sabotage someone’s career.”

“Ex employee?”

“As of yesterday, yes.”

I blink. “You fired him.”

“I don’t tolerate that behavior.” His voice is cold. “But firing him doesn’t undo the damage to your reputation.”

My hands clench in my lap under the table. “Is that why you wanted to meet? To tell me you fired Ryan? Consider me informed. Thanks.”

I start to stand, but Adrian’s next words stop me.

“I want to offer you a solution.”

I sink back down slowly. “What kind of solution?”

He’s quiet for a moment, choosing his words carefully.

“We’re both here because our families won’t leave us alone. And you’re here because Ryan ruined your professional reputation.” He pauses. “What if we could solve both problems?”

“I don’t follow.”

Adrian pulls out a folded paper. Sets it on the table between us.

“A contract. Six months. We appear to be in a relationship. Public appearances, social media, enough to convince our families and the gossip mill.”

My brain struggles to process. “You want to fake date me.”

“I want a mutually beneficial arrangement.” He taps the paper. “I get my family off my back. You get your reputation restored. People see you with me, they forget Ryan’s rumors. You’re no longer the clingy ex. You’re Adrian Knight’s partner.”

“For six months.”

“Six months. Then we part ways. No mess, no drama, no feelings.”

I stare at him. At this man who followed me into an elevator two weeks ago and told me I wasn’t ordinary. Who just fired Ryan for spreading rumors about me. Who’s now sitting here proposing the most insane thing I’ve ever heard.

“You’re serious.”

“Completely.”

“We barely know each other.”

“Which makes it perfect.” Adrian’s expression doesn’t change. “No emotional entanglement. No risk of actual feelings complicating things. Just a simple business arrangement between two people who need something from each other.”

The waiter returns with our food. I don’t even look at it.

“Why me?” I ask when we’re alone again. “You could have anyone. Why would you want to fake date someone who’s…” I gesture vaguely at myself. “Ordinary?”

His jaw tightens. “You are not ordinary, Ms. Bennett. And that’s exactly why this works.”

“Explain.”

He leans back, studying me. “You walked into that dinner two weeks ago and ended a relationship with more grace and dignity than most people manage in a lifetime. You didn’t beg. Didn’t cry. Didn’t make excuses. You simply refused to accept being treated as less than you deserved.” He pauses. “That’s not ordinary. That’s remarkable.”

My throat tightens.

“And more importantly,” he continues, “you have no interest in my money or my name beyond this arrangement. You won’t try to make it real. You won’t develop feelings and complicate things.” His eyes meet mine. “You want your career back. I want my freedom. We can give each other exactly that.”

I should say no. Should walk out and never look back. This is crazy.

But Adrian slides the contract across the table.

“Read it. Think about it. Call me when you decide.”

I look down at the folded paper. My fingers itch to open it, to see what exactly he’s proposing in legal terms.

“And if I say no?” I ask.

“Then we finish this very awkward blind date, go our separate ways, and you never hear from me again.” He stands, dropping bills on the table that probably cost more than my rent. “But if you say yes…”

He lets the sentence hang there.

I watch him walk away, leaving me alone with a contract and a choice that could change everything.

My phone buzzes. Mia.

Mia: “How’s the business dinner?”

I look at the contract. At the door Adrian just walked through. At my half eaten food that cost more than I make in a day.

Me: “It’s complicated.”

I pick up the contract with shaking hands.

Inside, written in clean legal prose, is an offer I can’t afford to refuse and can’t afford to accept.

Six months of pretending to be in love with Adrian Knight.

The question is: can I trust myself not to make it real?

  • LOVE WAS NOT IN THE CONTRACT   Chapter 77: The Seed of Doubt

The restaurant Adrian picks is small, candlelit, and has no photographers outside, which under normal circumstances would make me happy.Tonight it just means there is no performance to hide behind. He is already there when I arrive, which he never is. Adrian Knight is a man who operates on a schedule so tight that being early is practically a personality flaw. But he is there, jacket off, sleeves rolled, looking at his phone with the particular frown he gets when someone says something professionally stupid in an email. He looks up when I walk in and the frown disappears.“You’re on time,” he says.“You’re early,” I say.“I had a good reason to be.” He says it simply, like it is nothing, and pulls out my chair, and I sit down and think about Vanessa’s voice and feel something tighten in my chest. He’s very good at making people feel special for exactly as long as he needs them.Stop it, I tell myself.I pick up the menu. The first ten minutes are easy enough. We order. Adrian studies

  • LOVE WAS NOT IN THE CONTRACT   Chapter 76: The Poisoned Friendship

The thing about poison is that it never tastes like poison.I think about that on the walk back to the studio, my coat buttoned wrong at the collar, Mia’s contact still glowing on my screen. The lunch was good. The restaurant was warm. Vanessa was, genuinely, excellent company. And somewhere between the starter and the second glass of wine, I stop watching her the way Mia tells me to. I stop cataloguing the warmth and the carefully chosen word and the non-intimidating restaurant. I just sit there. And let myself be disarmed.Which is what she wants. Which I know is what she wants. And I do it anyway.I call Mia.She picks up before the second ring. “Tell me everything.”“I told you already. She was nice. Warm. She apologized.”“For what specifically.”“For how she treated me when Adrian and I first got together. Said she couldn’t believe he was actually letting someone in, and then she saw how he was with me and she,” I pause, trying to land it accurately, “she said it was different.”

  • LOVE WAS NOT IN THE CONTRACT   Chapter 75: Vanessa’s Return

I show Mia the text. Her response is immediate and physical. She puts down her coffee, picks up my phone, reads it twice, puts my phone back down, and then looks at me with the expression of a woman who has opinions she is organizing into a ranked list.“No,” she says.“I haven’t said yes yet.”“You’re thinking about it,” she says. “I can see you thinking about it. Stop thinking about it.”“She says no agenda.”“She absolutely has an agenda,” Mia says. “Vanessa Hale was born with an agenda. She comes out of the womb with a five-year plan and a seating chart.” She picks up her own coffee. “Do not go, Zara.”I look at the text again on my phone.I just think we got off on the wrong foot and I’d like to change that. The thing is, I think about Victor this morning. About what he says to Adrian. About three weeks and the contract ending and the conversation that has been waiting and the thing I need to be brave enough to do. And I think: I have spent eight months being afraid of things tha

  • LOVE WAS NOT IN THE CONTRACT   Chapter 74: Victor’s Warning

I am right about Victor.I find this out on Monday morning from Adrian, who calls at nine forty-five sounding like a man who has just survived something he does not fully anticipate and is still doing the internal accounting on it.“Victor would like to have lunch with you,” he says, without saying hello.I put my coffee down. “With me.”“With you. Specifically. Not both of us. You, individually, at twelve-thirty on Tuesday.” A pause. “I think it is a follow-up to the conversation he has with me this morning.”“A follow-up.” I sit down. “What kind of conversation does he have with you this morning.”“The kind,” Adrian says, “where he closes the door and does not open his clipboard. Which I have not seen him do in eight years. So.”“So,” I say.“So it is, I will say, a very Victor conversation.”“How did it go.”Another long pause. The kind that means something significant happens and he has not decided how to feel about it yet. “Can I call you back at noon? I need, I just need a minut

  • LOVE WAS NOT IN THE CONTRACT   Chapter 73: The Morning After Reality

He texts at nine-seventeen.Not about the kiss. Not about the soon or the almost-confession or any of the things that have been building for eight months and which kissing him in the Marlow lobby does not exactly resolve, just, clarifies.Just: Good morning. How are you feeling about last night?I stare at it for a long time over my first coffee of the morning.Because on the surface it is a perfectly reasonable text. Thoughtful, even. The kind of thing you send to someone after a significant event to check in. And it could mean: how are you feeling about the launch. About the reviews. About the rave coverage and the client’s face and the journalist who uses the word considered three times. It could mean all of that.It does not mean all of that.I type back: The launch was everything I hoped. Thank you for being there.I stare at what I write. Then I add: And for the record, I’m not sorry about the other thing.I press send before I can think too carefully about it.His reply comes i

  • LOVE WAS NOT IN THE CONTRACT   Chapter 72: The Celebration Kiss

The thought arrives the way certain true things do, quietly and completely, without asking permission. I look at him, at his small real smile and his warm honest face and the way he is standing in the middle of the room I build like he belongs here, like there is nowhere else he would rather be on a Thursday evening, and I think: enough.Enough almost-saids and doorways and corridors and car windows.Enough standing at the edge of the thing and not jumping. He is still looking at me when it happens.I close the distance between us in three steps and I kiss him.Not carefully. Not performing for a camera or a photographer or a room full of colleagues who expect it. Not the Chapter Eight kiss that lasts three seconds too long and leaves us both shaken and pretending otherwise. This is different. This is me, in my room, in my light, at my launch, kissing Adrian Knight because I want to and because I have wanted to for eight months and because pure joy is, I am learning, the most honest t
