As Jason sat in the backseat of his sleek black car, watching the city lights blur past the tinted windows, his phone buzzed.

Vanessa: ‘Just so you know, my family’s throwing a party tonight at the Pearl Hotel. It’s big. Everyone important will be there.’

Jason read the message once, his expression unreadable. The Pearl Hotel? Of course the Smiths would go all out. They had just landed a deal with Sterling Enterprises—thanks to him—and now they wanted the whole city to see them as royalty. He was curious to see how they will treat him now after he has helped them so tremendously.

Jason now hoped they’d finally acknowledge the truth: he was the reason for their resurrection. Hoped they’d give their blessing to him and Vanessa—publicly, sincerely. He had helped them rise from the ashes. They had no choice but to respect him now. Or so he thought.

What Jason didn’t know was that this night—this celebration—wasn’t going to be the victory lap he expected. In fact, to them, he wasn’t even

“Darling, thank goodness you’re here. This whole situation has gotten completely out of hand. The poor boy simply can’t accept reality.”The guests leaned in, practically salivating with anticipation. This was better than reality TV—they were about to witness the Smith heiress publicly destroy her own fiancé. Hell, had they known this was what went on at the smith royale events, most of them would never skip them.Vanessa’s eyes darted from her mother to Jason. Her anger at him—for what she believed was his lie—was undeniable. But hearing them say that he was causing a scene? That made her even more furious. The audacity.Jason met her gaze and let out a small, tired sigh. He didn’t defend himself—because he figured she knew him well enough by now to understand that he’d never create drama on purpose. In fact he never did at all.But Jason was wrong.“Jason, at least have some decency not to cause a scene,” Vanessa said, her voice sharp with disappointment. If Jason was capable of ly

Jason could not believe what he was hearing. His gaze moved slowly between Charlie and Seraphina, disbelief etched across his face. He didn’t know what was wrong with these people, but it sure as hell was infuriating. And it had to be said that Jason barely let himself get infuriated, but this time he had no choice, because how could they not know he was the one who had made that deal happen?Back when the smith family got the news, Jason had specifically told them what would happen, and even Vanessa herself had confirmed it. ‘And who the hell is Cassius anyway?’ Jason thought to himself. But the name itself made Jason’s jaw tighten. Whoever this idiot named Cassius was, he had some balls—or maybe he was just a shameless bastard claiming a victory he had nothing to do with. It made Jason want to teach this Cassius character a lesson he wouldn’t forget. But thinking about lessons, Jason knew the Smith family deserved one too. He let out a slow, deliberate sigh and asked, “And who is t

Jason stepped out of the car in a tailored black suit that cost more than most people’s cars. The fabric moved like liquid shadow, perfectly fitted to his frame. Already a handsome guy without any embellishment, the suit transformed him into something that commanded attention, and he was getting it.Cameras clicked the moment his foot touched the pavement. Flashes erupted like tiny lightning storms.‘What the hell’ Jason’s eyes swept over the cluster of reporters. Then understanding dawned, cold and bitter. Of course. The Smith family would do something like this—invite the press just to show off. Probably hoping to broadcast their big comeback to the world. He adjusted his cufflinks with deliberate precision, straightened his jacket, and strode toward the entrance like he owned not just the building, but the entire block.Whispers sparked among the photographers and other news people. Even some of the guests who were just arriving could not help but slow down and look back at him and

“Okay. I appreciate that , Jamal.” Jason said, although he was still thinking about the Caelthorn family that had reportedly disappeared years ago.He didn’t know them and was only hearing about them now, but why did it sound so familiar?“You’re welcome, sir. Do you want me to send someone to search the property for another piece of the map, or maybe the Obsidian Dagger itself? Or should I get clearance from the Voss family so you can do it yourself?”“No need. I’m friends with Selene Voss. I’ll ask her to show me around. That way, I can see if the dagger is in there.” Jason’s gaze narrowed in thought. “Anyway, do you have any idea why their location is on the map as a clue? I find it strange that they disappeared—probably dead—and now they are tied to the Obsidian Dagger.”“That’s what I’m trying to figure out,” Jamal replied. “I also think they’re connected to the dagger. The Caelthorn family was known for their esoteric collections and fascination with ancient artifacts.”After a

“As the head of this family, and your grandmother, I demand that you end your engagement with him, immediately,” demanded Lady Smith, her voice final.Vanessa felt a cold dread creep into her stomach. Her initial anger at Jason, fueled by the family’s fervent belief in Cassius, suddenly felt complicated. To be ordered so bluntly to dismantle her own life—even a part of it she currently resented—was infuriating. Her fingers curled so tightly around her glass she feared it might shatter. The thing Vanessa hated most about her family was how they always tried to make decisions for her—especially when it came to her love life. And she hated being told what to do. Especially by her grandmother, whose authority was absolute—and rarely gentle. Yet what could she say? She did believe Jason had lied, and the idea of being free of a fraud was tempting. Still, this engagement wasn’t meant to be broken. It had been arranged by her late grandfather.Meanwhile, Seraphina pressed a hand to her chest
