“Granny, Jason did not do any of those things. Mom and aunt are lying,” Vanessa defended Jason. She had to, because she knew he was not in the wrong here; her mom was. And she never thought she would see her lie like this.

When Lady Smith heard Vanessa's words, she had a thoughtful look on her face. That was because Vanessa would never lie about this, and she knew it. So that meant Seraphina and Cassira were the ones lying; Lady Smith was sure of that. “Oh, is that so?” she questioned.

Seraphina flinched at her gaze.

“Mom, don’t believe Vanessa, she is not…”

“Quiet, Seraphina!” Lady Smith demanded. “I don't want to hear another word from you.”

“Grandmother, wait. Don’t be so quick to believe Vanessa,” Charlie said. He then stepped forward with a seemingly placating hand raised, turning to Vanessa. “Vanessa, my dear cousin, how can you stand by this man? After he so brazenly insulted our family, humiliated Aunt Seraphina and Mom in front of everyone? You should easily just… dump him r

Jason had no clue where Mikayla lived, and she was in no state to tell him. So he took her to the only place that made sense: His villa. It sat tucked away in a private enclave. A place with tall gates, security cameras, and silence money could buy. This villa was given to him by the eclipse syndicate, to use while he is here on his mission. The building itself was sleek and modern. Jason stepped out of the vehicle, and walked around to open Mikayla's side of the door. She was still unconscious even now. Jason searched for a pause and she was still breathing. Maybe she was exhausted and was going to be asleep for a while. He carried her inside the villa and placed her on the leather couch in the living room. The moment he let go, she curled into herself slightly, instinctively. She looked vulnerable, curled like someone used to bracing for the worst. Jason almost felt bad for her. Jason stood for a beat, staring down at her. She was breathing steadily. A bruise was forming along h

It was clear that she was expecting to be paid. That's why she was even willing to do this dangerous thing in the first place. Because she was promised to be given enough money to at least pay half for her mom's medical expenses.Mikayla tried to reason with her cousin, “George, she’s your aunt. She really needs the operation, please!”“So?” he shot back. “You want money? Earn it. One good con doesn’t mean you’re in.” George said.Mikayla looked like she was about to cry, her eyes almost met Jason's. But she was not strong enough to do that, not after the move she just pulled on him. She was feeling guilty about it, and ashamed too.Another guy nearby spoke up. “George. Bringing her in was a mistake. She’s soft. You see her face, she is about to cry.”“She doesn’t belong in this,” another one of George's friends added. “This girl’s going to rat on us, the second shit gets hot. She’s desperate,” He went on. “People like that don’t stay quiet. She’ll sell us out to the cops.”George lis

After getting the car keys from Vanessa, Jason left. Half an hour later, he drove down the quiet road, the city fading behind him. The headlights cut through the darkness, the smooth hum of the engine filling the silence. The highway was mostly empty, just a few cars passing by now and then. His mind was still replaying the night’s events, Seraphina and Cassira’s lies getting exposed, Lady Smith stepping in, and Vanessa... surprisingly kind. She even gave him her car to get back home with. That could only mean that she didn't dislike him anymore. That was the part that lingered with him most. She was finally starting to accept him.Up ahead, the road curved slightly. He adjusted the wheel, glancing at the speedometer. He wasn’t in a rush, but he wanted to get home, take a hot shower, and shut his brain off.Just at that same time, out of nowhere, someone jumped out from the bush onto the road. It was very dark so they weren't very visible, until they were Infront of the vehicle.Jas

“Yes. Would you like me to play it in front of Charlie and Lance?” Lady Smith asked coolly, holding up her phone for Seraphina and Cassira to see.The threat of the footage was enough to shatter the confidence right off their faces. The color drained from Seraphina’s cheeks, her jaw slack. Cassira clutched at her mouth like it could hold back the memory of their public meltdown. They knew exactly what was on that video, and what it would prove. If that video was played, that would prove that Jason hadn’t lied, and they were actually the ones who had lied.“There’s no need to play the video,” Seraphina said quickly, her voice suddenly thin.Lance blinked in surprise, giving his wife a taken aback look. Why wouldn’t she want it played? If she was telling the truth, this should’ve been her golden ticket. “Why not? Mom, go ahead and play it,” he said, turning to Lady Smith.“Lance, no! Don’t,” Seraphina snapped. “There’s no need.”“There’s every need,” Jason cut in, his voice even and cal

“Vanessa, why did you bring that here?” Charlie snapped the moment Jason and Vanessa walked in.Jason raised an eyebrow, unfazed. “I have a name, Charlie. Use it,” he said, cool as ever. He glanced around the room, then added with mock curiosity, “What time is it? You guys are up pretty late.”He acted like he didn’t notice the daggers in their eyes, like the tension in the room was just bad lighting. And Jason didn’t care. When were they never glaring at him disdainfully anyways? He was already used to it by now.Plus, he already knew exactly why they were mad.Seraphina had clearly beaten him here, spinning her little fairy tale. She'd probably told them how she and Cassira got kicked out of the gala, pinning it all on him like he’d set the place on fire. And he indeed got them kicked out, so maybe that specific part wasn't a lie, but the reasons would be.“You! How dare you show your face here?” Lance Smith roared, his voice thundering through the opulent entrance hall. He took a h
