“You’re sentencing me to death?” I asked, not sure if he even heard me as I had lost my voice.

“You’re a rogue. If I had let you stay for any longer without doing anything, I would be dead by now because you were sent to kill me. You don’t walk into a pack and try to kill the alpha of the pack without facing the consequences.”

“That was before I knew you were my mate. You killed my brother. You took my best friend away. You deserve to die more than I do because your attack on us was unprovoked.” I knew my words were not helping me. If anything, he would only get angrier.

With a scoff, Darius shook his head. “You don’t understand anything, do you? For every single rogue that’s roaming out there, there’s one more person in danger. Your kind killed my parents.”

I stayed silent. I was not going to exchange more words with him. It wouldn’t go anywhere.

“When do you plan to execute me?” I asked after a moment of silence.

He looked at me with slightly raised brows as if he was shocked at my acceptance of the situation. If he was expecting me to beg for my life, he was sorely mistaken.

I would know if he was going to spare my life or not. He was not. His hatred for rogues was far more powerful than anything about him, as far as I could tell.

“If you’re going to make it a public execution, please don’t make the other rogues watch. The ones you have in your custody, I mean. They’ve been through enough. Watching me die in front of them without the power to do anything would kill them,” I said, which only caused his brows to crease further.

“Your execution won’t be happening anytime soon. It’s an auspicious time right now the festival of the red moon will be held soon, and my pack is hosting it. I wouldn’t want any more rogue blood cursing my soil.”

I chuckled bitterly at how the most of his problem was a festival. Something we didn’t have the privilege to even think about.

“I care about my people as much as you care about yours, but we’re on opposing sides here. I don’t want them to witness a public execution before a celebration. After the festival, we can talk about you.”

I stayed silent. There was nothing to say.

“You will be watched every single minute of the day. Don’t you ever think of escaping this room. Forget about the festival, you’ll be killed immediately.”

There was a tone in his voice that let me know the last thing he was doing was bluffing.

He turned around and finally walked out, slamming the door behind him just as I grabbed a pillow and threw it at the door in agitation.

“Goddess, please!” I cried out as tears rolled down my cheeks. I had done everything I could to hide it, but I didn’t want to be executed. Not like this. I needed to get out of this place.

True to Darius’s words, the room was guarded. I heard footsteps all day. There were mutters in front of the door which I only suspected were from the guards standing in front of the door.

“Do I ever get a chance to get out of here?” I asked on the third day of me being kept in the room when one of the guards walked in and handed me my food for the day. I was given food twice a day, and that was the only time I set my eyes on someone.

“The alpha didn’t make any such orders. You’re a prisoner in this pack. It’s already strange enough that you’re being treated this way. You can’t possibly be free enough to walk, rogue.” The way he spoke to me with such venom was like a slap to the face.

I would never understand lumping every rogue together into one box of people who thrived on chaos when all we did was try to survive.

“I need to get out of here,” I whispered to myself when the guard walked out. “The festival…”

Of course. Everyone would be too busy celebrating. Maybe they would celebrate so much that they would forget there were rogues around, even for a moment. That would give me enough time and enough noise to fight off the guards without them knowing.

Most importantly, Alpha Darius would be with his pack members.

I drafted out a plan in my head, trying to gauge just how many guards were standing out there everyday.

“When is the red moon festival?” I asked when another guard walked in later that evening to hand me my second food for the day.

“Tomorrow night. Not like you’d participate anyway.”

My heart thudded faster. I had just one day to go over the plan in my head. I took deep breaths, walking back and forth. I looked out of the window and stared down.

I could jump out of the window and shift so I could get a good landing, but that would be riskier. If I didn’t land properly, I could break my bones. Even if I did, I didn’t know what was waiting for me down there on the outside.

I decided to go for my first plan. Attack the guards outside, sneak out, pretend to be a pack member. I was pretty sure they wouldn’t recognize my face as one of the rogues.

I would get out of there.

The door opened on the night of the red moon festival, and instead of a guard, Darius walked in.

My heart tightened at the sight of him, betraying me as it remined me of the mate bond that still existed between us. Perhaps it was because I hadn’t seen him in a while, but it felt even stronger now.

I looked away from him so he wouldn’t see how much he affected me. “Why are you here? Shouldn’t you be with your pack members at the festival?”

If he decided to stay there for a while, that would put a dent in my plans. I had not calculated this possibility in my escape plot.

“I came here to give you the news. I’ve decided that I cannot possibly have you stay here any longer.”

“And you have decided that…” I waited for him to finish for me. A part of me, though tiny, wanted him to let me go.

“Your execution will be held as soon as tomorrow morning, right after the festival. As soon as the sun rises, my people will see the fate of a rogue who planned to kill their alpha.”

My heart deflated, and I looked down at the sheets.

Tomorrow morning. That only meant I had no other option but to escape tonight. If I didn’t, I would be dead.

“I made a new deal with the witches,” I announced to Darius when I walked into the bedroom and found him sitting in bed with a sleeping Aaron.“That’s good news. Sometimes I don’t know how you do it.” He shook his head in amazement. “Also, Alpha Tyrell is coming over to the pack today. He wants to talk about the alliance between us and how well it stands.”I could see the worry on his face, and I hated it. He knew he was a good alpha, but the events of the past few days had been weighing down on him.“Darius,” I called out to him with a worried frown. “You’re going to do good. You’re the same person who created the alliance in the first place, aren’t you? I’m sure you can do it.”He nodded, but there was still a glazed look in his eyes that told me he wasn’t exactly ready to go down there.“Alpha Darius,” a soldier called after knocking and walking in. “Alpha Tyrell and Luna Deirdre are here. They’re down in your throne room to have a talk with you. What do I tell them?”“We’ll be dow

The witches were more affected by the death of their leader than I thought they would be. It was obvious right from the moment I stepped into their coven and the gloom hit me so much that it almost made me cry.“What in the world…” I trailed off as I looked around to see vines hugging trees so tightly. It was a sight I had not seen the last time I was there. It was now harder for me to walk down the paths because there were vines covering the whole place, making it hard for me to find where to put my legs.As if the trees were not enough, the vines crawled up the houses of everyone. Almost as if it was keeping everyone in and keeping everyone else out.I was torn between calling out for attention and going to see the state of Janet’s house. I settled for walking over to her house, which was the most shocking sight of all. There was barely anything there I could call a house. It was all green with the vines that had wrapped the space up, small flowers opening up to the sky from the vin

Darius and I burst out of the bedroom, instructing the woman who was tasked with taking care of Aaron to join him in the bedroom and lock the door. As soon as we were out of the house, I started to hear the loud noises of people from the borders.“I think you should return to watch over Aaron,” Darius said when he stopped in his tracks and cupped my cheeks in his hands.“No.” I shook my head. “Someone’s taking care of him. If I see the arrow and figure out that it looks like the one from before, then we’ll be sure to rule the rogues out of it.”Darius looked at me, clearly confused at my logic. But I didn’t have the time to explain just yet. I would tell him everything when we reached and saw the arrow, so I took his hand and led him to the border.“There!” He pointed in the direction of the spot where a good number of the guards were gathered and yelling.“He’s dead! There’s nothing we can do!” One of them yelled at someone else who seemed to be bending right beside the body of the s

“It’s someone we know,” Darius said as he paced up and down in the bedroom. I was feeding Aaron, but my mind was racing with the different possibilities of who could have sent that arrow to us.So far, all we knew was that the person was skilled in archery, and the person knew that we would be at Aeron’s pack. Or they had followed us there.“And you’re saying you trust every single soldier you have out there? You don’t think there’s a possibility that one of them could be a spy?” I raised my brow at him.He looked at me with a warning stare and slightly shook his head as if telling me not to go there. I couldn’t help but have that thought, though. Would it be the first time that we were being betrayed by someone we trusted? No.“You do know that if you have any spies among your soldiers, it wouldn’t be your fault. I hope you know that,” I reminded him. “And it wouldn’t make you a horrible alpha of your people. In fact—”“No, Zara.” He stopped me by raising a hand to keep me from going

“Darius!” I yelled. Fortunately, I managed to hold his hand and pull him back to me before he could run to Frank and start the same thing that had gotten us here in the first place.“You don’t want to do this,” I whispered aggressively at him as I pulled him far away from the crowd. “Maintain a level head. This is the same reason why we’re here, Darius. You know that.”He looked down at me as he heaved continuously. Then, he stepped back and raised his hands in surrender to signal to me that he wasn’t going to do anything rash.“I see why the moon goddess picked you and not him,” Frank said to me, starting to press on at Darius’s short fuse. “Maybe you should be the alpha since you’re better at speaking and convincing people instead of him. His brother was miles better than him at being a leader. That’s why his pack is still as backward as it is.”“You’re starting to push it. I have no patience for this nonsense,” Darius warned him. “I know the last thing my brother would want is me b

“What…” One of the pack members finally gathered enough strength to break the silence as the rest of them stared at me and Darius as if we had suddenly conjoined to each other. “I think we probably just heard you wrong. What did you say to us about the vampires and our pack?”Darius looked at me with the same worried look he had been giving me since the moment I told him what Smith wanted. I only blinked at him in assurance that it was going to be fine. In truth, I had no idea if that was even true.“Listen, we know how difficult it is for you all to stomach what you just heard from Darius, and I want—”“Damn right it is!” One of the men who was standing in front of the crowd earlier spoke up. “This is the pack that Alpha Aeron claimed all by himself. Not even his brother was there when he started to build this great pack all alone. And now that he’s dead, you think you can just walk in here and try to claim the land? Forget about claiming the land, even. You want to hand it over to v
