CAELAN’S POV
The moment Lyra and I were alone, I turned away, my back to her.
There was a long silence followed by an awkward shuffling of her feet before she spoke. Her voice sent that familiar calm sensation over me.
“You called for me.” She said
I nodded.
“I got a report from the leader of the warriors. You interrupted a training session.” I accused
There was a small snort before she replied. “Interrupted is not a word I would use for what happened.”
“Then why were you there?” I asked.
“I was curious.”
With raised brows, I turned around. “Curious?”
She nodded. “I wanted to see the warriors train. I was excited.”
“I see,” I said. “Is there a reason why that excited you?”
Lyra pursed her lips, her cheeks reddening softly. I felt a tiny sting of annoyance.
“Did you by any chance find a man to give you attention?” I asked again.
I found myself taking a step towards her. My body begged her to answer the question as a feeling I could not name stirred up in me.
“I beg your pardon?” Lyra frowned, her gaze narrowing against me. “Are you trying to imply that I am throwing myself at one of your men?”
I didn't answer; instead, I asked another question.
“Why were you suddenly flustered when I asked for a reason why you went to the training grounds?”
She scoffed. “I was not flustered.”
“You were.” I replied,
“I was only ashamed to talk about my interest in the training,” she replied, her fists clenched at her side. “I can assure you I have no desire to be with any rogue.”
Anger sliced through me at her words. While I was satisfied that she had no desire to be any man in the pack, I felt her words insult me. Even though I was the rogue king, the strongest of all the rogues, I was still a rogue myself.
And the way she spoke, it was almost as if she didn't see us as a part of the realm. Like we were worthless.
“Do you think you are better than everyone here?” I asked
“What?” She was obviously confused from the way she threw her head back in surprise.
“I said, do you think because you were not exiled that makes you better than us?” I snapped.
“I—no, that's not what I mean.” She replied quickly.
“What do you mean?” I closed the gap between us.
She shook her head. “I was just trying to tell you I have no desire to be with any man.”
Fear crossed her face. She was scared.
She had every right to be. I was furious.
My blood raged, and I clamped my teeth together, trying to hold in my anger.
She stepped back, but I followed. Soon, I had her back against the wall, caged with nowhere to go.
“I didn't know it would make you so angry.” She said.
But my mind has already begun to run off on a different track. I began to notice every little detail, the soft shine on her skin, her wide innocent eyes that pleaded with me.
I was weak against those.
And then, there was the way she kept biting her lower lip in distress, making it pop, with a small hint of saliva.
I could feel the desire pulse in me.
“Lyra?” I called softly.
“Yes?” She whispered.
I pulled her against me, my hand against her waist.
She gasped, wriggling.
“Stay put,” I said harshly.
For some reason, she didn't fight back.
“Everyone calls you the King. But I want to know your name.”
My lips curled in a small smile.
“Caelan,” I said.
“Caelan.” With a soft whisper, she relaxed against my hold, and I pressed her against me, allowing her to feel every bit of me, my desire.
This was something I had never done before.
The emotions, the feel of her against my skin, all of it. It felt so strange yet exciting.
And I wanted to explore it.
I was the king. I had the power to do what I wanted.
I dipped my head, my eyes locked on hers.
Lyra’s lips parted slightly, her head tilted upward as if she was waiting for our lips to seal.
I was close, almost there. I could already taste the sweetness even before our lips touched, the tingles.
Just as I was about to seal the kiss, a thought popped into my head.
“You don't deserve her. You are pure evil. You will destroy her.”
I backed away quickly, letting Lyra go.
She looked at me in surprise, her eyes confused as she bit her lips again.
I groaned and swallowed hard.
Fighting my desires, I closed my eyes for a brief moment, trying to pull myself together.
“Leave.” I said
“What?” She looked more confused than before.
“I said leave. I do not want to see you any more.” I repeated.
Lyra barked out a bitter laugh. “Was that a test to prove that I am not better than anyone here?”
I was amazed at how she came to such a conclusion, but I didn’t try to correct her. Instead, I walked to the window and looked at the view beyond it.
She didn't say another word; the next thing I heard was the door closing behind her as she left.
“Fuck!” I swore roughly
How could I have let that happen so easily? It was almost as if I had no control over my own body.
What exactly was it about Lyra that made me act and feel so different and alive?
This was not good. Whatever it was that kept pulling me to her, I needed to put an end to it before it became a problem I couldn't control.
It was bad enough that my pack had their reservations towards Lyra; the last thing I would want was for them to hate her completely due to my selfish interests.
Besides, I could never have her. Not with the kind of things I had done in the past.
There was a reason many Alphas trembled at the mere sound of my name, and that fear was achieved with more than just threats.
Blood was spilled.
Lyra wouldn't be able to bear that. She was too innocent for me. And maybe it was better if I left it at that.
Lyra POVMy feet slapped against the cold ground, breath ragged and limbs trembling as I ran.My heart thundered fiercely in my chest, the beat drumming loud against my ears.I could hear them, the rogues. Their growl tore through the forest in waves, but I never looked back. I didn’t want anything to slow me down.“A little further.” I whispered into the air, begging my tired limbs to push harder. Then I tripped.I fell to the floor in one swoop, the breath knocked out of me. I groaned, dragging my feet against the floor as pain seared through me.“Get up!” I whispered to myself. “They must not catch you.”It was hopeless at this point. The wolves had already surrounded me.“Please.” I begged. “I will leave and never come back. Just let me go.”There was no response to my plea. One of the rogues grabbed my arm fiercely and pulled me up so hard I felt as if my bones were going to dislocate.Suddenly, another one of the wolves that I recognized as the leader grabbed my throat.“Don't d
Caelan POVMy eyes opened.I wasn't dead, not yet.It took a long time for me to adjust to my environment, but I still had no idea where I was.I was lying on the ground, my back against the lush green grass of a field. Around me, there was nothing, just a wide space that seemed to go on forever.I sat up and frowned. This wasn't the rogue territory. Who brought me here? Idris?I felt my blood charge.Suddenly images of the last moment I had before now flashed through me.The war.I looked around. This was not what I expected. I was supposed to be on the warfield, surrounded by rogues and wolves. But where I was, was nothing close to that.It looked like something made out of a fairy tale.As if on cue, a butterfly fluttered its wings and rested against my fingers.“Why am I here?” I whispered into the air. “Where is everyone, Alpha Idris?. What happened to the war?”Right at that moment, the sky rumbled. Like a reply.I looked up.The clouds began to change from a smoky white to a da
Thorne POVThings didn't go the way I plannedI had no intention to end this war with Caelan’s death, but somehow it did.Guilt gripped me as I thought about what I had done to go unscathed.I became a Caelan's traitor. It was something I had to do, something that needed to be done to get rid of Lyra.I balled my fingers into a tight fist.Lyra.That useless bitch ruined everything. How did she manage to survive the war despite all I had done? But now, there was something about her that I needed to explore. What she shifted into. That wasn't a werewolf. It was some kind of ethereal creature, one I have never seen before. And then the fire she summoned. That should have been an impossible feat.A werewolf that has the gift of element? It was unheard of.As strange as Lyra's creature looked, it didn't feel demonic, yet it was frightful. The power that she harnessed was immeasurable. When Lyra shifted, I watched from a distance. And when she chased Idris away, I knew it was over.Lyra po
Lyra's POVI had no idea how long I stayed on the ground with Caelan's cold body in my arms. But I didn't move, not until the warriors came and pulled him away.“No. Wait!” I scrambled to my feet.It was strange how attached I was to a man I should have seen as a monster. It was even stranger that I felt such intense emotions for him despite the fact that we haven't spent a lot of time with each other. There was something that simmered between us.Something that I was yet to figure out, and from the looks of it I may never figure out.I grabbed a hold of one of the warriors who took Caelan.“What are you doing?” I asked “where are you taking him to?”He pulled his arm away from me.I noticed something strange. This warrior was clean, too clean. It didn't look like he had been in the war just now.“The King is dead, tradition demands we must burn his body.” He said.“No!”A low growl had me spinning back quickly and I felt my bones ache from the anger that rose in me.I saw Thorne. Lyra's POVHell was let loose. But I was ready. I pulled out the dagger I had taken in exchange for the sword; wielding it, I fought hard against the wolves that came my way.All around me, there were screams and howls of pain. Rogues fought fiercely, trying to defend their territory and their families.Nothing was going according to plan. And now, the Rogues were outnumbered. It was more than I had expected. It was almost as if Alpha Idris had called for backup.I also noticed that Thorne and a few warriors were missing in the war. It had been a planned betrayal to sabotage Caelan’s plans. My skin crawled at the stench of blood in the air, but I refused to let that stop me as I raced through the field. My heart clenched as I witnessed the rogues fighting hard. I looked around, head whipping back and forth, searching for Caelan.I ducked just as a wolf lunged at me.Still in human form, I swiped my dagger at him; the sharp end of the blade dug into the side of his neck.Blood oozed ou
Caelan POVThe first thing I smelled was blood. It lingered in the air, and my head snapped in the direction it came from. And there she was,Lyra. She held the missing girl in her arms.Relief flooded me and I moved closer.“You did it.” I smiled. Then I noticed it.The blood on her hands and clothes. The way she dragged her feet against the floor, almost as if she was trying to hide her pain. The look in her eyes. Dead.A small crowd had gathered, and the little girl was taken away from her and handed over to her mother, who cried out in relief. But I was more concerned about Lyra. I frowned when her expression remained the same, the pain on her face too great to ignore.“Lyra!” I rushed forward, catching her just before her knees gave way. Her body was limp against mine, her breath shallow, and her face caked with blood—not just hers.“I did it,” she whispered, her voice rough.I felt warm liquid from the part where I held her. I raised my hand, and cold dread gripped me at the sig
