Chapter 2

Author: Call and I'll Come
At dawn the next day, I was jolted awake by the sound of Biscuit convulsing.

The balcony tiles were cold.

Biscuit lay on the floor, his whole body wracked by violent spasms, a puddle of bloody foam spilling from his mouth.

His eyes had already started to glaze over. He couldn't even manage a whimper.

Terrified and shaking, I scrambled into the living room.

"Levi! Levi!"

No answer. The master bedroom was empty too.

The apartment was eerily silent.

With trembling hands, I pulled out my phone and opened my social media feed.

The first post was from Tessa, half an hour ago.

She'd tagged a luxury hot-spring resort outside the city.

In the photo, Tessa sat at the edge of a hot-spring pool in a swimsuit. A man's hand reached in from the side, drying her hair with a towel.

The caption read: "Weekends are made for soaking in the mountains! Somebody promised to make up for the scare I got last night."

My knuckles went white around the phone.

But I couldn't afford to be heartbroken right now.

I rushed to the entryway for my car keys, only to find the key tray on the shoe cabinet empty.

My car keys were gone.

Levi's car had gone in for service yesterday. He'd taken mine.

I called him right away.

Levi's voice was thick with impatience.

"Sienna, what game are you playing now? You only think to apologize after I've already left? Last night you were tough enough to sleep on the balcony all night. Too bad you didn't freeze to death."

My voice was shaking. "Levi, Biscuit's dying. He's throwing up blood. Bring the car back. His medicine's in the car..."

"Enough!"

He cut me off coldly, his tone dripping with scorn.

"Sienna, you really think this trick works, don't you?

"Every time Tessa's around, you play sick and pitiful. First it was stomachaches, then fevers. Now you're using the dog too?"

"Levi, I'm not lying! Biscuit's really dying!" I was practically screaming.

Tessa's voice came over the line. "Levi, the water's perfect. Hurry up and get in."

Levi paused, then said to me, "Sienna, listen carefully.

"If you don't fix your attitude today and apologize for that little stunt last night, I'm not coming home all weekend.

"If the dog dies, I'll just buy you a new one!"

He hung up.

When I called back, his phone was already off.

I sank to the floor, drained, and the phone clattered against the floorboards.

Buy a new one?

That was Biscuit, the dog we'd raised for seven years. The one Levi used to call his son every chance he got.

I wiped the tears from my face, ran back to the balcony, and wrapped Biscuit in an old blanket.

He weighed nearly eighty pounds. I don't know where the strength came from, but I hoisted him up.

Outside, the rain was pouring down. The autumn downpour pelted me, cold enough to cut to the bone.

Holding Biscuit, I ran out of our complex and stood at the muddy roadside, trying to flag down a ride.

But the rain was too heavy. I was soaked through, cradling a big dog who was barely hanging on.

One car, two, three... Empty cabs sped past, splashing me with muddy water. Not a single one would stop.

Biscuit twitched weakly in my arms, and warm, bloody water smeared across my cheek.

"Biscuit, don't be scared. Mommy's taking you to the vet. We're almost there..."

I knelt in the rain, sobbing in despair.

Finally, a beat-up taxi pulled over.

The driver was a middle-aged man. He took one look and quickly pushed open the passenger door.

"Hurry, get in! Don't let the dog freeze!"

I stumbled into the car with Biscuit, shaking all over.

The car sped through the storm. I held the dog tight and watched the blurred streets outside the window.

On that freezing morning, I finally saw it clearly.

The Levi who'd once carried me on his back three blocks to the ER was dead.

  • Late Remorse   Chapter 10

Levi's face went deathly pale.He set the puppy down abruptly, and with a thud, dropped to his knees in front of me.He clutched the hem of my clay-spattered denim apron and looked up at me."Sienna, I know I was wrong. I really do."I was such a jerk. I just got so used to having you around that I thought you'd never leave..."I used Tessa to make you mad because I wanted proof that you cared. I just wanted to see you get jealous over me..."He rambled on, laying his twisted mind bare, crying so hard his whole body shook."Give me one more chance. Just one."Let me spend the rest of my life making it up to you. Please, Sienna, don't give up on me..."The streetlight stretched his shadow out long and pitiful.I looked at him kneeling in front of me.A year ago—no, even six months ago—if he'd said a single kind word to me, I would've thrown myself into his arms without hesitation and forgiven him for everything. But now, I reached out and, little by little, gently brushed hi

  • Late Remorse   Chapter 9

One evening in early winter, the temperature plunged. The sea breeze turned biting.I put away the carving tools on the studio counter and got ready to pull down the rolling door and close up.The moment I turned around, I froze.Someone was standing under the streetlight outside. It was Levi.I barely recognized him. He'd lost so much weight he looked like a different person. The black coat that used to fit him perfectly hung off his frame. His eyes were sunken and bloodshot, and his jaw was covered in dark stubble. There was no trace left of the composed, superior executive he used to be.He stood in the cold wind, shivering. And there was a strange bulge inside his coat. When he saw me turn around, he strode toward me.He unzipped his coat and pulled out a puppy.A golden retriever puppy. He couldn't have been more than a month or two old, a fluffy little thing that looked exactly like Biscuit had as a puppy.Levi looked at me, and his eyes went red.His voice was h

  • Late Remorse   Chapter 8

Sienna's POVIn my second month after leaving Levi, I settled in Aurelia, a slow-paced little town on the coast. There was no bone-chilling wind here, only a warm sea breeze that tasted of salt. With my savings, I rented a little bungalow with a yard by the water. There was a big lemon tree in the yard.I buried Biscuit's ashes beneath it.Every morning when I got up, I filled a pitcher with fresh water and poured it over the roots."Morning, Biscuit. The breeze off the ocean's nice and warm today. Get plenty of sun."I ran my hand over the rough bark as I spoke softly.I hadn't cried since.I fixed up the bungalow and opened a ceramics studio of my own.I picked up the carving tools and clay I'd set aside for seven years.I cut off the waist-length hair I'd grown out for years. It had been Levi's favorite length. He'd said long hair made a woman look gentle.I threw out all the plain, demure dresses in my suitcase. In their place, I wore loose linen shirts, a denim apron

Levi returned to the empty apartment. He didn't turn on the lights. In the glow of the streetlights outside, he threw himself onto the couch. It was too quiet. He patted his pocket for a cigarette, only to find the pack empty. He leaned forward and pulled open the coffee table drawer, looking for a spare pack.He didn't find any cigarettes. Instead, his hand landed on a thick hardcover notebook.Levi took it out and, by the light of his phone's flashlight, opened it to the first page.It was a scrapbook. It was full of clippings and printouts, with Sienna's neat handwriting all over the margins. The first section was nothing but recipes for his favorite dishes."Levi won't eat cilantro. Cut the green onions into big pieces so he can pick them out.""He loves barbecue ribs, but not too sweet. Add extra apple cider vinegar."Further in, it was all guides for managing his stomach condition."Prilosec: take it thirty minutes before meals.""After he drinks with clients, alwa

Levi drove like a madman to Sienna's company.Ignoring the security guards trying to stop him, he charged straight into the design department.Sienna's desk had been cleared, and a new hire he didn't recognize was sitting at it."Where's Sienna? Get her out here!" Levi shouted, his eyes bloodshot. The head of HR walked over, frowning at him."Mr. Maddox, Sienna turned in her resignation a week ago. She finished handing over her work and left three days ago."Levi froze.A week ago. That meant that before Biscuit got sick, before her thirtieth birthday, she'd already been getting ready to leave. She wasn't throwing a tantrum. She'd been methodically, step by step, cutting herself out of his life for good.Levi walked out of the building in a daze and into the dim underground parking garage. At some point, Tessa had followed him there. She trotted after him in her high heels and hooked her arm through his again. She seemed completely oblivious to his mood, still whining in

  • Late Remorse   Chapter 5

Third-person POVLevi figured Sienna was just throwing a tantrum.Over the past five years, she'd threatened to break up plenty of times. The worst time, she'd actually packed her suitcase and dragged it all the way to the elevator. But he'd just stood in the doorway and said coldly, "If you get in that elevator today, don't ever come back."Sienna had burst into tears on the spot. She'd dragged the suitcase back inside and cooked him dinner, crying the whole time.So this time, Levi wasn't worried in the slightest. He even believed that pouring out the liquor at the restaurant was just an extreme move to force him to back down."Let her stew for a couple of days. She'll come crawling back on her own," he told Jason. For three days, he deliberately stayed away from the apartment and didn't send Sienna a single message. Then, on the afternoon of the third day, Tessa cut her finger opening a package at the office. She held up her finger, a bead of blood welling on it, and whin
