Chapter 2

Author: Muddle Egg
The study door clicked shut in front of me, cutting off their low murmurs.

By the time I left the bedroom the next morning, the house was already empty.

Used dishes sat on the dining table alongside a half-eaten fried egg and half a glass of milk.

As always, they were left for me to clean up.

I pretended not to see them and dragged my heavy body to pack my belongings.

Inside the nursery, the tiny clothes and baby bottles and the items I had scraped together, biting my tongue after every single Blue rejection.

I packed them up and stuffed everything into my suitcase.

Once I finished, I called Samantha Wade.

Samantha was my mother's former student.

When I quit my job to become a housewife, she had tried so hard to talk me out of it.

She arrived quickly. Looking at my swollen belly and the suitcase, her brows pulled into a tight knot.

"Are you really going to take it this far?" Samantha asked, her voice heavy with concern. "Back then, you willingly handed over the Deep Blue project design to Daniel for free so he could sign the biggest client in Milan.

“Are you really ready to walk away from this marriage?"

I didn't argue. I simply handed her my phone, showing her two years' worth of allowance logs.

The endless sea of blue tags looked like the slow erosion of my dignity.

Samantha went silent.

She took my luggage and stopped at the door, turning back to look at me. "Nora, as long as you wake up, it's never too late."

A sudden tightness gripped my lower abdomen. I sat on the sofa for a while, waiting for the cramp to ease.

My phone chimed with a notification from the company's main group chat.

I didn't leave the chat after resigning, and they had likely forgotten I was still in it.

The latest post was an announcement showcasing Chloe's new design concept.

The attached drafting file made my fingertips instantly turn cold.

It was a design I had spent two grueling weeks on, a few months ago when I was planning to rejoin the creative team.

But then I unexpectedly got pregnant, and Daniel said the timing wasn't right.

So the timing wasn't right for me, but giving my work to Chloe was perfectly fine.

I typed a single line into the chat.

[When did the design drafts saved on my personal laptop become yours?]

Daniel replied immediately.

[Stop talking nonsense in the group.]

A second later, a system prompt popped up.

[You have been removed from the group chat.]

---

When I arrived at headquarters, hushed whispers followed me down the hallway.

"Look, she actually brought the drama to the office. How petty."

"She stays at home living the easy life and still can't satisfy herself. All she does is get jealous."

"Chloe got to where she is on merit. Her? Pure luck. Just because she married well!"

Ignoring the gazes digging into my back like needles, I walked straight into Daniel's office.

Chloe was inside. A form sat on his desk, and Daniel was in the middle of signing it.

I glanced down. It was a project performance bonus for a forty-thousand-dollar company car allowance.

The project hadn't even started, yet the bonus was already approved.

No color tags, no approval tiers. He signed without a second of hesitation.

Looking up and catching me staring, Daniel instinctively flipped the page over.

"Since you're here, apologize to Chloe," he said, his voice cold and commanding.

I stared at him in disbelief. "Apologize to her?"

"Nora, there's a limit to jealousy. Posting those accusations in the main group makes Chloe look bad."

I let out a harsh laugh.

"Stealing someone else's design doesn't make her look bad?

“Approving a forty-thousand-dollar car allowance before a project even starts doesn't make her look bad?"

Chloe tugged softly at his sleeve, her voice quiet. "Daniel, let's just forget the car. Don't fight because of me. I don't want Nora to resent me even more for holding up her requests."

His face hardened completely. "So this is still about money for you.

"Then let me give you a lesson you'll remember."

He pressed the intercom on his desk and ordered security to physically remove me from the building in front of the entire company.

Outside, the cold wind hit my skin, and a sharp, severe pain pulled deep in my abdomen. I quickly sat down on a stone bench near the entrance.

My phone buzzed twice in succession.

The first message was from the hospital.

[Mrs. James, your test results are in. Your risk of premature labor is extremely high. You must be admitted by the day after tomorrow at the latest to prepare for delivery.]

The second message was from Daniel.

[I've frozen your credit card. I'll unfreeze it when you apologize.]

I sold the house we shared during our marriage and bought a bright two-bedroom apartment. When Iris turned three months old, I took her out for her milestone photos. On our way back, I ran into Chloe outside the building. The immaculate polish she used to wear was completely gone, and she wore no makeup. It looked as if she had been waiting for a long time. Her eyes lit up the moment she saw me."Nora, I sold the sports car and paid back every single cent!"Daniel sued me to recover the firm's financial losses."I have nothing left now. Not a single company will hire me."She stared at Iris, who was sleeping peacefully in my arms, her tone lowering to utter desperation."I'm begging you. Just say one word to Daniel and ask him to drop the lawsuit, please?"I looked at her with an unreadable face. "You chose this path yourself."She shook her head frantically, heavy tears streaming down her face."No! None of this was my fault from the start!"It was Daniel! He planned ever

A light drizzle fell on the day of the court hearing.Daniel sat at the defense table, his eyes bloodshot. My lawyer took the lead, laying out every claim clearly. He detailed Daniel's domestic financial abuse and his unauthorized transfer of marital assets. The moment he finished, defense counsel produced the agreement I had signed in the hospital room."The plaintiff and defendant shared a stable, loving marriage with no irreconcilable breakdown," the defense attorney claimed smoothly. "This mutually signed agreement proves the plaintiff was merely emotional, likely influenced by postpartum hormones."My client desires only to preserve the marriage and holds no grievances against the plaintiff."I glanced at Daniel. He kept his head bowed, saying nothing. To them, every humiliation and cold brush-off I had suffered remained nothing more than a childish tantrum.I let out a faint laugh and submitted my evidence, piece by piece. The copyright registration timestamps for the

Nora's POVBefore the court date, I agreed to see Daniel one last time.Samantha wasn't at the hospital that day. Daniel walked in carrying arms full of bags, along with a high-end baby stroller."Nora, these are for the baby," he said, his voice quiet, stripped of his usual condescension."What color priority did you approve these under?" I asked. His face turned instantly pale. "Please don't talk like that.""Isn't that how you always did things?" My voice sounded completely flat, even to my own ears.He paused before asking, "What did you name her?""Iris James. Well, just Iris."He fell silent for a few seconds. "I haven't signed the divorce papers.""Then we wait for trial. The outcome will be the exact same."His lips began to tremble. "Nora, I unfroze your credit cards. Moving forward, I won't let Chloe touch your requests ever again."I'm firing her. Can you please give me one more chance?"I finished folding the last baby outfit and raised my head. "No.""But I

Daniel couldn't reach me no matter how many times he called. Driven by frustration, he rushed straight to the hospital.Samantha blocked him right at the entrance of the ward."I need to see Nora!" Daniel demanded."She's resting," Samantha said flatly."Tell her to drop the lawsuit. She's carrying my child, there's a limit to how far she can push this!"Samantha let out a cold laugh. "Carrying your child? Pushing it?"Daniel, is your head just an ornament?"He froze, his foot caught mid-step. "What do you mean by that?"Samantha crossed her arms, her tone dripping with disdain. "Nora went into premature labor! Right while you were forcing her to sign that contract!"Daniel whipped his head around, staring dead at Chloe standing behind him."Is that what you meant by nothing serious?"Chloe lowered her head, her voice barely audible. "I thought Nora was just putting on an act. Weren't you the one who said she loves throwing tantrums?"Daniel turned away from her without a

"Daniel, this is way too expensive. What if Nora brings this up to the board and makes things difficult for you?"Daniel raised a hand dismissively, his voice firm and completely composed."Don't worry," he said. "I paid for it through my personal account. Nobody can say a word."Hearing that, sweet satisfaction filled Chloe's eyes.Yet as the man watched her docile, smiling face, his thoughts drifted back to Nora.Ever since she resigned, he had instituted strict rules to curb her

I didn't stop walking. I went straight to the hospital. After finishing all the admission procedures, I lay back on the hospital bed, feeling a persistent, heavy pressure dragging in my lower abdomen.Early the next morning, I received a message from my lawyer. [The evidence chain is complete. We are ready to file.]I had barely exhaled a breath of relief when Samantha called."Nora, Daniel is at your mother's art studio! I can't get her work out of there!"My body swayed violently. I grabbed the wall to steady myself, but a sudden wave of warm fluid gushed out beneath me.My water had broken.Right at that moment, Chloe stepped into the hospital room holding a thick document."Nora, don't bother waiting," Chloe said, a wide smile spreading across her face. "Daniel has been paying the lease on your mother's studio all along. He has every right to break the lock."She paused, her smile widening. "All your design drafts and your mother's life work are stored there, aren't they
