Chapter 4

Author: Napine
The next morning, I brought the box with me to a courier service center. When I scanned the QR code to make my payment, a notification popped up saying I had insufficient balance.

After checking my account, I realized that Zachary had transferred away the remaining 300 dollars I had left yesterday afternoon. That was the money I had saved up after two months of working at part-time jobs!

"Hey, miss, hurry it up! People are waiting, you know!" the staff member at the counter urged impatiently.

The other students lining up nearby looked over at the commotion. Some of them recognized me and began gossiping.

"Isn't that the little pet who broke up with her backer? I heard that she used to spend Zachary's money lavishly. Seems like she's broke now that she's been dumped."

Another person spoke up loudly, his tone dripping with disdain. "Little pet? That's a nice way of putting it. Let's be frank here. She's nothing but a slut who sold her body for money. Didn't she get an award or something previously?"

Their mean words seemed to stab into my eardrums. I subconsciously tightened my grip on my phone and told the staff member to give me five minutes. Then, I ducked into an alley behind the store and made a call.

"Mom, could I borrow some money…"

Mom's voice blared over the speaker, almost deafening me. "You ungrateful wretch! Back then, we told you not to get involved with that rich boy, but you absolutely refused to listen! Now that he's dumped you, you're asking us for money? Serves you right, you good-for-nothing!"

I bit my lip, not daring to say a word as I hung up.

Left with no other choice, I could only head to Zachary's home while carrying the box myself. Along the way, the edges of the box dug into my arms painfully, and whenever I hefted the box up higher, some of the items would fall out. I could only clutch those in my hands.

I had only just reached the entrance to Zachary's neighborhood when he drove by in his car.

Kelly was seated in the front passenger seat, several shopping bags from luxury brands sitting in her lap. When she noticed me, she deliberately raised the bags to show them to me.

The car came to a stop beside me before Zachary rolled down the window. Glancing at the box I held, he let out an imperceptible sigh, then quirked an eyebrow with a light laugh.

"I knew you couldn't bear to leave me." He pointed at a nearby bench. "Wait there. Kelly and I are going ahead to buy a bag first, then I'll come back for you."

Before I could tell him that I was here to return these items, he had already stepped on the accelerator and zoomed off.

As they were about to disappear from sight, Kelly stuck her head out the window to wave back at me, her lips stretched in a smug smile.

I dumped the box at Zachary's front door before leaving. All the while, my mind buzzed with thoughts on how I could earn money.

I had no intention of asking for the 300 dollars back. I would simply take it as paying him back for the meals he had treated me to before.

That afternoon, our faculty suddenly announced that they would hold a recognition ceremony to award the National Scholarship recipient.

The department head had called me a day ago to tell me that I was the recipient, so I had to prepare a speech.

However, the person who ended up on the stage to receive the award was Kelly.

She was clad in a new dress that Zachary had bought her, and even her complexion seemed a shade brighter.

After accepting the certificate, she deliberately approached me as she left the stage. In a voice low enough that only the two of us could hear, she said, "Melissa, someone reported you for improper conduct, so you can't blame me for getting the award instead of you."

When I frowned, she continued, "You know, I even failed five classes, but Zach got in contact with the lecturers and had them change my grades. How could I possibly have graduated if not for him? Speaking of Zach, he wanted me to pass on a message.

"He said that, no matter how hard you work, you still can't beat the influence he has with just one sentence."

"Looks like it isn't easy being the son of a prestigious family either! Now that his parents have learned about him bribing the school, they're definitely going to be teaching him a harsh lesson after dragging him back home," Sandra commented from beside me, her lips stretched in a grin. That night, I was just about to close up when I spotted my mother and younger brother, Josh, standing under the nearby street lamp."Your brother still needs 600 dollars for his bridal gift. Zachary is rich, so don't be an ungrateful wretch and go reconcile with him right now!"She clamped a hand over my arm, refusing to let me leave.I yanked my arm free before dusting myself. "I won't be getting back together with Zachary, and I don't have any money for you either.""The bride's family is demanding 2000 dollars for the gift. If you don't give us the money, Josh won't be able to get a wife!"Josh stepped forward anxiously, but before he could grab me, Sandra suddenly sauntered over while sucking

Kelly collapsed to the floor, her tears ruining her makeup and leaving ugly trails down her face.Jabbing a finger at me, she screamed, "What gives? You clearly used to rely on Zachary! Why do you get to catch the interest of a PhD advisor? Why do you get to publish a thesis? Why am I only ever able to get your scraps? It's only right that Zach treats me well. You were the one who insisted on hogging him all to yourself!"Nobody paid her words any mind, while several staff members were already making their way to her. They would be taking her away to process her withdrawal. She struggled as they dragged her away, twisting her head around to continue throwing harsh insults at me. Her voice grew progressively fainter until only an echo of it remained in the auditorium. It was then that Zachary's assistant approached me with the same flash drive in his hand."Ms. Sole, there's one thing I need to clarify to you. All the gifts that Zach bought for Kelly were actually meant for you. Sh

"As I've said many times before, we're no longer an item." With that, I turned to leave without another backward glance.Right before I entered the library again, I spotted Zachary from the corner of my eye, still standing at the same spot. His gaze was glued to me, and when he noticed I had faltered in my tracks, his eyes lit up with hope.I didn't stop moving and stepped through the entrance of the library. It was only later that I learned some interesting things through my roommates' gossip. As it turned out, Kelly had seized the opportunity while Zachary was hospitalized to take his money, then used his name to get close to his friends, aka, the other scions of wealthy families. She accepted their lavish gifts and slept with them. She even mocked Zachary for being easily deceived as she took and sold off some of his items.Zachary's mother happened to overhear this, and he supposedly blocked Kelly at record speed.…Two weeks later, the editor of the journal to which I ha

After closing up the stall, I returned to my dorm room, only to hear my other two roommates gossiping about how Zachary had been hospitalized due to gastrointestinal bleeding from excessive alcohol consumption. One of them commented, "Kelly hasn't been to class the past two days since she's been heading to the hospital every day. She even bought a ton of imported fruits and condoms…"The other replied, "Well, this is Zachary Corington we're talking about. Not only is he handsome, but he's also rich. I would go too, if I were in her place. But he's already in the hospital because his stomach is bleeding, so how could he still, you know… Especially since she still has the smell of someone else's cologne on her."The first roommate burst into laughter, then continued the gossip session.I didn't bother talking to them. I simply sat down and began writing my thesis. Being burned once was more than enough for me, and I wouldn't easily believe such lies again. The PhD advisors shared

As my dorm building came into sight, I spotted Zachary's car parked by the roadside. He hadn't gotten out and was simply looking out the window in my direction.I went around his car and entered the building. My phone buzzed while I was heading upstairs. It was a message from another unfamiliar number."Melissa, I know you're mad that I turned to Kelly. Be good now. You know that I care about you the most, so just stop with the tantrum, alright? Since tomorrow's the weekend, I'll take you out for some fun."I stared at the message for all of two seconds before deleting it and switching my phone to silent mode. The next day, I woke up bright and early to locate the tutoring group chat I had saved previously. I contacted the parents of an elementary schooler and was scheduled for a trial run in the afternoon. The boy was very obedient, and with the parents satisfied with my performance, I was asked to come every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoon to tutor him. I would be paid

At midnight, we closed up and counted our revenue for the day. After deducting the expenses, we managed to earn a little over 20 dollars.I breathed a silent sigh of relief. In the past, I had heard rumors that people would pick on new stall owners, but it seemed those rumors couldn't be trusted.I bought two sandwiches and handed one to Sandra. She rolled up her sleeves before taking a bite. "My mom is always complaining about how I'm not finding a proper job, but my dream is actually to open a small shop of my own in the future. "If you wish to free yourself from Zachary and your family, I'm more than willing to be with you every step of the way. Let's rely only on ourselves to make a living."I chewed on my sandwich, my mind drifting back to when I first met Sandra. She was one year ahead of me, had dyed-black hair, and had a butterfly tattoo on her upper arm. At the time, her appearance made me think she wasn't someone to mess with, so I kept my distance from her. However,
