Amber was used to being abused. She endured the vicious beating and horrible screams from Violet, fighting back tears and swallowing the blood in her mouth.

Actually, she used to know what happiness felt like. There was a time when she lived with her foster parent, a middle-aged lady. She had fresh clothes and a brightly lit home. She could even go to school and play the piano.

But she could never go back there anymore.

On the chilly night in autumn, Amber wore thin clothes, her knees scraped and injured. Clutching her head, she apologized nonstop. "Mom, I'm sorry. It won't happen again."
