Chapter 7

Penulis: Light Breeze
The next morning, Willow woke up with a headache.

Blair was considerate enough to bring her some medicine.

After taking it, Willow felt much better. She was about to take a shower when Blair huffed indignantly, "Mr. Ziegler is completely into that vixen. He came home last night and saw you completely drunk but still chose to drive away."

That was how Willow found out Julian had come back the previous night.

Blair suddenly remembered something else. "Oh, right, Mrs. Ziegler, Mr. Ziegler told us to have Mr. Gibson's jacket cleaned and delivered to him. At least he's still considerate toward you."

Blair had no idea about Julian's real intentions. She thought it was a gesture of care.

But Willow understood. Julian was just afraid of being cuckolded.

She wasn't feeling well, so she stayed home for two days and took time to visit her grandmother.

On Monday, Nebula Group underwent a shake-up.

A major project had gone awry, and all the evidence pointed to Willow's negligence. After a board meeting, she was suspended from all her duties and had to vacate the vice CEO's office that very day.

On the 32nd floor, standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, Willow quietly watched the bustling cityscape of Brindley.

Behind her, Annie pushed the door open and spoke in a hushed voice, "Ms. Harper, Project Aurelia has been handed over to Catherine."

Annie was seething, but Willow remained calm.

At this point, she no longer wanted Julian. Fame and status had become fleeting clouds in the wind.

Once she took what she deserved, she would leave with dignity, stepping out of Julian's world. Whether he truly loved Catherine or was simply compensating her no longer mattered to Willow.

Just as she was about to speak, her phone rang on the desk.

She walked over and answered. It was Julian's father, Liam Ziegler, asking her to meet him in his office.

Willow agreed.

That afternoon, she took a car to Liam's workplace.

Liam wasn't employed at Nebula Group. He had his own business. He seemed refined and carefree, but in reality, he was quietly paving the way for Julian.

It was late October.

A gust of autumn wind carried the scent of osmanthus blossoms.

The moment Willow stepped out of the car, Liam's personal secretary, Victoria Morris, greeted her. She was a strikingly beautiful woman who smiled as she led Willow to an elegant lounge.

Victoria slid the door open and respectfully announced, "Mr. Ziegler, Ms. Harper is here."

Liam was sipping coffee. Hearing this, he looked up and said warmly, "Willow, you're here. Come in and have some coffee with me."

Willow stepped inside the lounge.

Liam was well aware of the recent changes at Nebula Group. Without revealing his thoughts, he poured Willow a cup of coffee and discussed the company matters.

He had always admired Willow. After all, her presence kept Julian's position secure.

But sometimes, ability was a double-edged sword.

A beast with sharp claws and fangs might turn into a threat.

Liam and Julian shared the same view on this matter, but Julian was just more aggressive in his approach.

Liam remained affable. "I've always admired you. Willow. Are you and Julian having problems recently? If it's about Catherine, don't bother. She's just a naive girl."

Willow smiled faintly. "We have no problems."

She wasn't foolish enough to make their conflict public. The Ziegler family was not known for kindness.

Liam was momentarily taken aback.

His appreciation for Willow deepened. She truly had composure.

After a moment of contemplation, he voiced his concern. "Project Aurelia is a collaboration with Mr. Chapman. Since Dexter has a volatile temperament, I worry that his involvement will bring trouble to the company."

Willow immediately understood his implication.

Her response was calm. "You can rest assured. Officially, Ms. Burke is in charge of the project, but Julian is actually overseeing it. Dexter won't have the chance to stir up trouble."

Liam, realizing his thoughts had been exposed, felt slightly uncomfortable and tried to smooth things over with some casual conversation.

By the time Willow left, it was dusk.

The sky was bathed in a shattered golden glow.

Victoria stood by the car, nodding slightly as she bid Willow goodbye. With her poised smile, she looked just like a flawless puppet.

Suddenly, Willow felt like she had seen her before.

Just before nightfall, Willow returned to her office.

She began packing. Some things she handed over, others she discarded. Annie cursed Julian, vowing that when they made their comeback, they would crush all the spineless opportunists.

Willow only smiled faintly.

Just then, there was a knock on the door.

Julian stood at the entrance, impeccably dressed, looking like a magazine cover model. He ushered Annie out. She muttered "scumbag" under her breath before leaving.

After Annie left, Julian stepped inside. His deep eyes were fixed on Willow.

They met again, but everything had changed.

Out of consideration for their past, Julian softened his tone. "Catherine was never the issue between us. Willow, if you want, I'll call a board meeting next month to reinstate you at Nebula Group."

Willow chuckled softly.

How ridiculous.

Their falling out, her breakdown that night, and the way she drowned her sorrows in alcohol were all childish rebelliousness in his eyes. He even believed that he was being generous and she should be grateful for his offer.

But the things he once promised no longer held any value for her.

Did he really think she still wanted to serve him and stay by his side? Just imagining how he cherished and protected Catherine made her feel like she had wasted her youth.

Willow stepped forward and adjusted Julian's collar.

For years, she had done this for him before every event. She had performed this act countless times.

Julian instinctively leaned down, allowing her to straighten his collar more easily. They were so close. She could feel his warm breath on her skin.

Looking at Willow up close, Julian couldn't help but recall the way she had looked that night in bed. They had been married for four years and had been intimate countless times, but he had never seen her like that before.

His Adam's apple bobbed slightly. The movement carried an undeniable allure.

When Willow was done, she gently ran her fingers over the fine fabric, a trace of nostalgia in her touch.

Six years of love and four years of marriage. It was over.

This was the last time, Julian.

She lifted her head and looked at him quietly before speaking in a soft voice, "No need. I'm not coming back."

Julian froze.

Willow stepped past him, carrying a small box as she walked toward the door. After four years, she realized there wasn't much she could take from Nebula.

At the door, she tilted her head slightly. Her voice was laced with quiet restraint as she said, "Bye, Julian."

A strange pang hit Julian's chest. Something about Willow felt different. But he couldn't quite put his finger on it.

Standing in her empty office, he watched as she walked toward the elevator and slowly disappeared from sight.

At that moment, Julian didn't yet realize that Willow had just said her final goodbye. She was leaving Nebula and leaving him. And she wasn't coming back.

It was the middle of the night, and Dexter was completely wasted in a nightclub. The manager was very happy that he sold 800 thousand dollars worth of red wine, but he was also upset. Dexter was in a foul mood, and he had the look that he could make a mess of this establishment the moment anything went wrong.Flat out of options, he had to send the most nimble-minded lady at his disposal to soothe Dexter. Then, he had a light-bulb moment. Catalina used to be very close to Dexter. Later, a young lady with a slender, delicate figure sat next to Dexter. His head was thrown back as he leaned on the back of the couch, his dashing face a shade of light red, and his Adam's apple bobbed uncontrollably. He embodied raw, masculine allure. Catalina blushed when she saw him, but she didn't dare to let herself fall for him for real. Her voice was tender and warm as she spoke. "Let me drink with you. Just tell me what ails you, and I will console you."Dexter opened his eyes just a crack

Jessica opened the office door and came in, only to find the mess on the floor. The documents were scattered everywhere, and what remained of his smartphone lay quietly amidst the chaos, its broken pieces a heartbreaking sight to behold.Dexter couldn't stop himself from breathing heavily. His expression spoke of despondency, and his body was as stiff as a nocked arrow, threatening to burst forth at any moment. Jessica hesitated a little before she walked over and gently placed a hand on his shoulder, trying to soothe him. Her fingers had barely touched him when he swatted them away mercilessly. She was immediately stunned, but Dexter showed no signs of comforting her. Instead, he stormed out of his office. It took Jessica a while to come to her senses, and when she did, she stumbled after him, calling out to him, "Dexter, where are you going?"He turned a deaf ear to her question, stomped into the elevator, and closed the doors as she watched. Jessica slammed the elevator doo

  • Leaving You Bereft   Chapter 395

Michael swung by Eleanor's place to pick her up early in the morning, and he brought his son and daughter, Sawyer and Tina Hall, with him. Sawyer was the older brother, mature and calm. Tina was the younger sister, sweet and adorable. She resembled her biological mother a lot.Michael left them at the Sutton residence and let Layla look after them, hoping that they would bond with Maisie. Later, he and Eleanor went downstairs and stepped into the car. They were just going through the motions, but Eleanor applied a light makeup for today's marriage certification procedure. She needed to conceal her haggardness.Michael turned sideways and looked at her. "From what I heard, the marriage bureau provides a veil for the wedding picture. It'll go well with your black turtleneck sweater."She grinned faintly. "Wonderful."He ran his finger through her hair tenderly, his voice gentle. "Eleanor, I hope you'll be happier about this. I'm still alive and well now. Before I move on to a bett

Michael gave Eleanor a ride back home, both of them quiet throughout the whole drive. Eventually, his car ground to a halt outside her apartment. Turning his head sideways, he looked at her and saw that her eyes were slightly red. She had cried for a long time by the lake, and she shed her tears for him. Michael spoke ever so softly and tenderly. "I know you're feeling down, but you have to grab a bite when you're home. The baby needs its nutrition."He brushed her tummy gently as he spoke, as if the baby in there was his own. Eleanor hummed softly in response. Looking at Michael, she struggled to get her words out. His voice deepened further. "We have agreed on the marriage, and there's no changing your mind!"Eleanor, I know we're just using each other to meet each other's needs, but I won't make you feel sorry for yourself. When I move on to a better place, you will…"She couldn't let him finish his sentence. Cutting him off abruptly, she cried out, "I won't change my min

In the dark, still night, neon lights in the city started coming to life. Eleanor sat on the bench at Brindle Lake Park, looking like a lost soul as she stared into the shimmering stars reflected on the water. Her wishful thinking still haunted her, embarrassing her. "Let me think about our future.""Dexter, I've made up my mind. Let's…"…Eleanor chuckled all of a sudden. That was it. It was nothing more than wishful thinking, and yet she thought it would come true. There was no reason Dexter would abandon a young, beautiful lady and welcome his ex-wife back into his arms. What transpired that night was nothing more than a fleeting pleasure for him. His words could've been as genuine as they were insincere. After all, it was just pillow talk, and yet she was the fool who believed him. Lowering her head, she carefully caressed her flat tummy, her heart torn between what was right and what she wanted. Eleanor had been pregnant for a little over a month, and her baby was st

The two locked eyes, one inside and the other outside, the tension between them thick. In an attempt to defuse the situation, Bernice said, "Ms. Sutton, please have a seat."Eleanor thanked her, walked inside, and sat on the couch. Dexter had also regained his senses and walked over to sit across from her, his gaze never leaving Bernice as she prepared two cups of coffee. Eleanor said gently, "I don't drink coffee. A glass of warm water will do."Bernice nodded and prepared another glass of water. Then, Eleanor and Dexter were left alone in the spacious office. Fiddling with the cup handle, she said in a serene tone, "When we were at the hotel suite, you asked me to give a long, hard thought about it. "After over a month of consideration, I think I'm ready to give you an answer. Dexter, let's…" Before she could finish her sentence, the door to the lounge opened, and out came Jessica. Jessica wore a cashmere dress, a pair of see-through stockings, and a pair of indoor slippe

Dexter stayed in Eboris for quite some time. A month later, even with New Year's approaching, there was still no sign of him returning.Eleanor hesitated for days before she finally dialed his number, but the call didn't go through. Instead, she happened to run into Dexter's secretary, Bernice, at a social function. Bernice mentioned that Dexter wouldn't be back until mid-January.Another half month to go…Eleanor was embarrassed to ask too many details, so after some small talk, she said goodbye to Bernice. The hallway in the clubhouse was bathed in dazzling lights. Bernice stood behind her, watching Eleanor's retreating figure. With a soft sigh, she turned away.Eleanor returned to the private lounge, where the atmosphere was lively. Michael was helping her entertain the two investors. He'd taken on all the drinks that evening. When Michael liked someone, he couldn't hide it. After seeing the guests off, he leaned back in his chair lazily. His breath reeked of alcohol."I dran

At night, Maisie had fallen asleep. After a shower, Eleanor wrapped herself in a bathrobe and sat out on the balcony, quietly gazing at the bright moon hanging in the sky, lost in thought. After a long time, she lowered her head and opened WhatsApp, tapping into the chat with Dexter. The last time they talked was about Maisie, over two weeks ago.He had gone to Eboris, and if it weren't for Maisie, she wouldn't even have known. But before he left, he asked her to think about their future seriously.Eleanor was torn, but she knew that if she hadn't felt anything at all, she wouldn't be thinking about this in the middle of the night, tempted to reach out to him.Her slender fingers hovered above the screen, but in the end, she didn't send him a message. She told herself to wait a little longer. Perhaps Dexter would be back in a few days.Gradually, the neon lights faded, and the city drifted into sleep.Early in the morning, the winter sun streamed into the bedroom, casting a warm

Eleanor was once again blocked outside the office. It was Russell again.Shell rolled down the window. Russell was still wearing the same clothes as yesterday. He looked haggard, and his eyes were bloodshot. It was obvious he hadn't slept all night. She asked calmly, "What else is there to talk about?"They'd dated for nearly half a year, and there weren't any financial disputes or expensive gifts to return. As far as Eleanor was concerned, they'd drawn the line clearly. At first, Russell hadn't held out much hope. He just wanted to see her one last time, but he hadn't expected to see what he saw. Her blouse was buttoned up neatly, but he could still see the faint hickeys on her fair neck.Inside the car, a subtle, masculine scent lingered. Eleanor had spent the night with someone.Russell couldn't take it. Eyes reddened, he asked angrily, "Who were you with? Was it Michael or Dexter? You've always refused to sleep with me. Was it because you had someone else in your heart?"Ele
