Chapter 1

"Ms. Angelina Scott, you went through six rounds of IVF to have this baby. Are you really going to give it up?"

"I'm sure."

After a sleepless night, my voice was hoarse, but my mind had never been clearer.

The procedure was scheduled for a week later, exactly on our wedding anniversary.

A breaking headline popped up on my phone.

"Claude had spent a fortune buying a luxurious estate and personally filled it with roses, once again declaring to the world that he loved only Angelina."

Comment after comment poured in, all marveling at the so-called love story.

I only felt the irony.

The moment I confirmed my pregnancy, I couldn't wait to share the good news with Claude Frey.

But instead, I got a message from an unknown sender.

In the photo, Claude's childhood sweetheart was smiling sweetly, while he kissed her rounded belly, his face lit with happiness.

The child I'd endured the agony of six rounds of IVF to conceive suddenly felt like a cruel joke.

The door opened just then.

When Claude saw my red, swollen eyes, he immediately panicked. "What's wrong? Did the IVF fail again?

"Don't cry. Even if we never have kids, it doesn't matter. Having you is enough for me."

How fake.

Especially when the child he had with his mistress was about to be born.

He didn't notice the change in me and just lowered his voice to comfort me, "Honey, our anniversary is in a week. I've planted a whole sea of roses just for you."

I stared at him in a daze, but I didn't argue with him. I didn't even let him see how much I was hurting.

Because I knew he would never let me go with his influence.

So, I had to gather all the evidence I could and divorce him. "I've got an anniversary gift for you, too. I'll give it to you in a week."

"Really? I can't wait." His face lit up with joy.

"Don't cry anymore. Go wash your face. I'll take you back to the Frey residence for dinner."

Claude's mother, Alicia Hawk, never liked me. These days, we only saw her at the end of the month when we went back to the Frey residence for dinner.

"Angelina, don't take whatever my mom says later to heart," he said, holding my hand.

The moment we walked in, I heard Alicia's laughter. "Oh my, this baby is so adorable."

I froze in place. It was the very woman from that pregnancy photo standing beside her.

When Alicia saw me, her smile disappeared. She handed Claude a sonogram photo.

"Look, Mabel's baby has a nose that looks just like yours."

A flicker of panic crossed Claude's eyes, and his tone carried a faint warning.

"Mom, don't joke around. That's Mabel's child. How could he possibly look like me?"

His father, Alex Frey, also stepped in to caution her. "Stop saying every kid looks like your son. Angelina's right here. Watch your words."

My heart turned to ice, and my hands trembled uncontrollably.

Claude's whole family knew about Mabel. I was the only one they kept in the dark.

I sat down at the table mechanically, while Claude fussed over me.

"Honey, the shrimp is fresh today. Let me peel some for you." Claude's expression was calm, treating me just like he always did.

"Claude, you're so good to your wife. I'm so jealous. I love shrimp, too. Can you peel some for me?"

Mabel Lowe suddenly spoke up provocatively.

Over the next few months, I started staying seven days in each city before moving on to the next.Claude's updates were always a step behind me, missing me again and again. But for some reason, Theodore seemed to know exactly which city I was headed to next.I gradually got used to having him around. Eventually, I even started telling him in advance which city I wanted to visit next, and we'd make plans together.During this time, Claude kept changing numbers to call me. I was getting sick of it. One day, I picked up one of his calls. On the other end, Claude sounded stunned. "Honey, you finally answered! Just let me explain—"I cut him off coldly. "If you're just going to talk about all that, then there's nothing for us to discuss. You should've already received the court summons. Let's just get the divorce over with."His voice trembled. "Let's not get divorced, please? It's all my fault.""So what? Can you bring my two children back to life? Can you undo what you did with Ma

The first month after I left, I went to a coastal city I had always dreamed of visiting to relax and heal.It was where I ran into my college senior, Theodore Ramsey.I didn't know anyone in the city, and my body was still weak from the abortion. That month, Theodore helped me a lot.I'd always been sensitive about feelings, and when I noticed the way he looked at me was more than just friendship, I chose to say goodbye and head to my next destination.Even if I avoided looking at Claude's public apologies online, I would still hear about them now and then. His brooding, regretful image made some people believe that his cheating could be forgiven, especially since, they said, he had always treated me well. Many people thought I should take him back. But the moment I learned about his affair, I had never once considered going back.I stayed in the second city for about half a month, but the climate didn't suit me, so I decided to move on again. The day before I left, I went ou

Claude's breathing grew heavier as he fought to hold back his rage.If the person who had picked up the phone just now had been Angelina, and she'd heard those words, how would she have felt?"Mabel, you're asking for it!"Mabel, on the other end, went silent for a moment. A few seconds later, her shaky voice came through. "Claude… It's not what you think, let me explain."He couldn't listen anymore and hung up. He wasn't going to let her off the hook.Just then, a car stopped outside. Brandon jumped out and stormed toward him. He grabbed Claude by the collar."Where's Angelina? Why can't I get in touch with her?"Claude suddenly let out a laugh. "She's gone. She doesn't want me anymore… and she doesn't want you either.""What the hell are you talking about? She would never abandon me!"Claude told him everything. His expression turned frantic. "But I was only trying to protect her! All these years she's been doing IVF, her body's gotten worse and worse, and your mom kept put

Alex was in the photo holding a young woman, whose smile looked a lot like Alicia's when she was younger.Alicia's face went pale, and tears welled up in her eyes. "Who is she? How could you do this to me?"Seeing that he'd been exposed, Alex no longer bothered to pretend."Didn't I just learn it from you? Mabel was the one you pushed onto Claude. I only made the same mistake every man makes. It's not like I'm bringing her into the house."At the very least, there won't be another child in the family."With that, he turned and walked away.Alicia asked Claude while crying, "We've been married 30 years. What did I do wrong for him to treat me like this?"Claude looked at her coldly. "And what about Angelina? What did she do wrong?"A knife would only hurt when it cut into one's own flesh.Alicia was like that.He was like that, too.Neither of them deserved to live in peace.Alicia slumped on the couch and turned to look at Mabel, who was standing off to the side, too scared

When Claude got home, he found no sign of Angelina, only the housekeeper."Where's Angelina?"The housekeeper was startled by his panic. "Mrs. Frey went out and hasn't been back all night. But she said she left you a gift."Angelina's surprise was in the baby's room. They had decorated this baby's room together when she was pregnant the first time. After the baby was gone, she couldn't bring herself to step inside again. The room had been closed off ever since.Claude's eyes immediately landed on an envelope sitting on the table. As he walked over, he tripped over a storage bin. Hundreds of syringes spilled onto the floor, rolling in every direction. These syringes were ones he had saved over the years to remind himself that all the pain Angelina had endured was because of him, and that he owed it to her to treat her well for the rest of his life.He picked up the envelope and carefully opened it.It was an ultrasound printout dated a week ago.His breath caught, and his eye
