Chapter 3

Author: Scarlett Flame
I left Wildrose Estate and returned home.

Claude didn't come back until the middle of the night.

I felt him wrap his arms around me while I was half-asleep. The air was thick with an unfamiliar perfume, mingled with the scent of roses.

The smell made me nauseous, and I started feeling a dull ache in my stomach. I pressed my hands to my belly, and when Claude saw it, he moved closer, trying to rub it for me.

My tone was sharp as I slapped his hand away. "You smell awful."

His expression shifted. He lowered his head, sniffed himself, then chuckled.

"It's the roses. I've been thinking about our anniversary, so I went to the rose garden again today. I'll go take a shower."

I couldn't be bothered to expose his lie. After all, he'd said he was going to the office earlier.

When he got out of the shower, he lay down beside me. But just as I was drifting off, the sound of his phone woke me.

"Did I wake you? I've still got some work to finish. You should go back to sleep."

I turned my back to him and pretended to sleep.

After a moment, his voice came, testing the waters. "Angelina?"

I stayed silent, and he eagerly slipped out of the room.

"Are you trying to seduce me by sending me pictures like that? I'll make sure you can't get out of bed tomorrow."

After he left, I got a message from Mabel.

"Aren't you feeling old and washed-up? Claude had me all afternoon, and now he's coming back for more. We're going to try some new positions tonight.

"By the way, I got pregnant with Claude after just one night together. It's pathetic that you have to rely on cold, sterile machines and still can't conceive."

A chill spread through me. I took screenshots and saved them, then lay back down.

For the past eight years, I'd always thought I'd met Claude too late, that life was too short. But with just one week left, it suddenly felt unbearably long.

The next morning, as I stepped out of the bedroom, Claude happened to be coming in from outside. "I bought you your favorite cheesecake."

Like a child showing off, he pulled a neatly wrapped cake from behind his back.

In the past, whenever he messed up and made me mad, he'd bring me cheesecake to win me over. And in the past, I'd always softened and forgiven him, simply because I loved him.

But today, what was this sudden cheesecake for?

Because he'd spent the night with another woman and felt guilty?

I picked up a fork and ate it. I wouldn't deprive myself just to spite him.

When he saw my calm expression, he finally relaxed. "I'll be right beside you working. Take your time."

I scrolled through my phone and saw Mabel posting an update.

"He's so good to me. I casually mentioned wanting cheesecake, and my boyfriend immediately bought it for me."

The attached photo showed cheesecake from the same shop as the one in my hand.

Seconds later, a comment from Claude appeared below. "As long as you know."

Not long after, Alicia commented, too. "He has to be good to you. You're carrying his baby. Unlike someone else who can't have kids."

Claude could see this comment.

I looked up to catch his reaction, but he was smiling faintly, completely unbothered.

I let out a short laugh and blocked Alicia's number. I'd been wanting to do that for a long time.

Before breakfast was even over, Alicia called him.

Her sharp voice rang through the phone. "What's wrong with Angelina? She actually blocked me!"

Claude frowned. "Angelina, Mom wanted to bring you food that helps with fertility, but she found out that you blocked her. Is that the case?"

Over the next few months, I started staying seven days in each city before moving on to the next.Claude's updates were always a step behind me, missing me again and again. But for some reason, Theodore seemed to know exactly which city I was headed to next.I gradually got used to having him around. Eventually, I even started telling him in advance which city I wanted to visit next, and we'd make plans together.During this time, Claude kept changing numbers to call me. I was getting sick of it. One day, I picked up one of his calls. On the other end, Claude sounded stunned. "Honey, you finally answered! Just let me explain—"I cut him off coldly. "If you're just going to talk about all that, then there's nothing for us to discuss. You should've already received the court summons. Let's just get the divorce over with."His voice trembled. "Let's not get divorced, please? It's all my fault.""So what? Can you bring my two children back to life? Can you undo what you did with Ma

Claude's breathing grew heavier as he fought to hold back his rage.If the person who had picked up the phone just now had been Angelina, and she'd heard those words, how would she have felt?"Mabel, you're asking for it!"Mabel, on the other end, went silent for a moment. A few seconds later, her shaky voice came through. "Claude… It's not what you think, let me explain."He couldn't listen anymore and hung up. He wasn't going to let her off the hook.Just then, a car stopped outside. Brandon jumped out and stormed toward him. He grabbed Claude by the collar."Where's Angelina? Why can't I get in touch with her?"Claude suddenly let out a laugh. "She's gone. She doesn't want me anymore… and she doesn't want you either.""What the hell are you talking about? She would never abandon me!"Claude told him everything. His expression turned frantic. "But I was only trying to protect her! Alex was in the photo holding a young woman, whose smile looked a lot like Alicia's when she was younger.Alicia's face went pale, and tears welled up in her eyes. "Who is she? How could you do this to me?"Seeing that he'd been exposed, Alex no longer bothered to pretend."Didn't I just learn it from you? Mabel was the one you pushed onto Claude. I only made the same mistake every man makes. It's not like I'm bringing her into the house."At the very least, there won't be another child in the family."With that, he turned and walked away.Alicia asked Claude while crying, "We've been married 30 years. What did I do wrong for him to treat me like this?"Claude looked at her coldly. "And what about Angelina? What did she do wrong?"A knife would only hurt when it cut into one's own flesh.Alicia was like that.He was like that, too.Neither of them deserved to live in peace.Alicia slumped on the couch and turned to look at Mabel, who was standing off to the side, too scared

When Claude got home, he found no sign of Angelina, only the housekeeper."Where's Angelina?"The housekeeper was startled by his panic. "Mrs. Frey went out and hasn't been back all night. But she said she left you a gift."Angelina's surprise was in the baby's room. They had decorated this baby's room together when she was pregnant the first time. After the baby was gone, she couldn't bring herself to step inside again. The room had been closed off ever since.Claude's eyes immediately landed on an envelope sitting on the table. As he walked over, he tripped over a storage bin. Hundreds of syringes spilled onto the floor, rolling in every direction. These syringes were ones he had saved over the years to remind himself that all the pain Angelina had endured was because of him, and that he owed it to her to treat her well for the rest of his life.He picked up the envelope and carefully opened it.It was an ultrasound printout dated a week ago.His breath caught, and his eye
