Chapter 2

Author: Bagel
I walked back into the empty cheer room. The loneliness washed over me.

Inside my locker, the hot chocolate Harrison had left for me was still steaming.

I took a sip, and it immediately burned my tongue. I gasped in pain.

My old instincts took over. I turned around, my eyes red with tears, waiting for someone to pull me into their arms, kiss the top of my head, and make it all better.

Brooks, Carter, Harrison, any of them would do.

However, there was no one around.

My body was trembling nonstop, and my chest hurt so much it felt like it was being ripped open.

Then I stood up abruptly and bolted out.

I rushed out the door of the cheer room and plunged into the storm outside.

Splashing through the puddles and bracing against the freezing wind, I tripped and fell several times along the way.

But I didn't stop. I just kept running.

By the time I reached the student council room, I was completely soaked and looked like a mess.

I practically smashed my fist against the door, but the person who opened it wasn't Harrison.

It was Brooks.

He had been lounging on the sofa in the front room, playing video games. His gaze dropped, locking onto my scraped knees, my torn skirt, and the blood trickling down my calf.

A flicker of an unreadable emotion crossed his face.

But in the blink of an eye, it vanished.

"What are you doing here?"

Brooks was the first of the three boys I had ever met.

He came from a wealthy family and had a sharp tongue. He was arrogant and picky. Yet he was fiercely protective of me, and only me.

When he still cared about me, he was always lecturing me for running off alone.

"You're too reckless, Ivy."

"You always charge forward without ever using your brain."

His words were always harsh.

But every single time, this rich kid would also quietly trail behind me to clean up my messes.

Before I even realized my mistake, he had already fixed it.

Sometimes he yelled at me so much that I would run home and cry under my covers.

He would always sneak into my house at the right moment, wipe the tears from my face, and bring me my favorite things.

Sometimes it was a rare plushie, and sometimes it was my favorite bakery cookies.

When I was still furious, he would press a gentle kiss to my forehead and say, "I'm sorry, my little princess."

Right now, I treated him as if he were invisible. I looked right past him, staring into the inner office.

Realizing that I wasn't here looking for him, Brooks's jaw tightened.

He gripped the doorframe heavily and let out a bitter laugh.

"Harrison," he called out to the back room without turning his head. "Didn't clean up the evidence of your hookup? Ivy followed the trail all the way here."

His tone sounded like a joke, but it was incredibly cruel. "If Nova finds out, what then?"

The freezing wind from the hallway poured in. I hadn't even grabbed a coat when I rushed out.

By the time Harrison came out, I was shivering uncontrollably.

His shirt was only half-buttoned, and his usually perfectly styled hair was a bit messy.

What was even more obvious were the two glaring hickeys right above his collarbone.

My heart sank violently.

Harrison shot Brooks an annoyed glare before turning his gaze to me.

In that suffocating second, a flash of undisguised impatience crossed his face.

A chill instantly spread across my chest.

I instinctively took a step back.

Just then, a heavy warmth landed on my shoulders.

I looked up blankly. It was Brooks. Without a word, he had thrown a dry towel over me.

Harrison then walked toward me.

His face softened again. It was that gentle look I had once craved so much, the one that made me fall for him in the first place.

It almost made me wonder if that flash of impatience I just saw was a hallucination.

"Ivy," he called out softly. "What happened to you?"

My throat choked up all at once.

"Harrison, I... I'll never complain about cheer practice being too tiring again. I swear. I'll never act spoiled and demand you go buy pastries in the middle of the night. I'll never throw a tantrum because you didn't reply to my texts instantly. And I absolutely won't bother you anymore when you're dealing with student council stuff. I..."

I spoke so fast I didn't even know what I was saying.

I didn't even notice that Brooks, standing right next to me, had frozen in place.

"I just want you by my side. Just you is enough. Please, Harrison. Don't leave me all alone."

Harrison remained silent, his eyes falling on my scraped, bleeding knees.

I started to panic, reaching out to grab his hand, my voice cracking.

"You said you would always be with me. You can't lie to me..."

But I grabbed nothing but air.

He pulled his hand back. The motion was slow, gentle, yet cruel enough to make my blood run cold.

"It's too cold in the hallway," he said in a low voice. "Come into the office. We can talk inside. Okay?"

When I said that, their faces crumbled.Harrison looked like he couldn't believe his ears. He lunged forward, reaching out a hand to grab my dress."Ivy... don't be like this..."I took a step back and dodged his hand."Stop acting." I dropped my smile.Harrison's hand hung stiffly in midair, the color draining completely from his face.Carter's lips trembled. "Ivy, we're not acting...""That delicate girl who constantly stressed over whether you texted back, whose whole world revolved around you, is long dead.""She died on that rainy night when you threw hot coffee on her. She died on the floor where you shoved her away for Nova, leaving her back to peel."Carter clutched his chest like he had been stabbed.Brooks clenched his jaw, tears falling silently. The pride he used to flaunt had vanished completely.I looked at them, with no hatred in my eyes. When you don't love someone, you can't hate them either. There was nothing left but absolute indifference."For the past three hundred

My complete indifference shattered their defenses.I didn't look at them for another second. After nodding politely to the French investor, I turned around, lifted the hem of my velvet gown, and walked calmly toward the terrace outside. The night wind was cool, blowing away the heavy perfume and the fake small talk of the hall.Leaning against the railing, I pulled my phone out of my clutch. The screen lit up; my academic advisor at Callinger had just sent an email. It was the final confirmation for our new conservation project in Kenya. With my head down, I typed out a reply.Right now, these things were my comfort zone.Suddenly, the sound of frantic footsteps echoed behind me. Dress shoes clicked against the floor, stumbling like they were drunk."Ivy!"The voice was one I used to know so well. The three guys pushed through the crowd and stumbled onto the terrace.I didn't stop typing. I just looked up over my screen.Standing before me were three men I barely recognized.Carter's e

The night of the alumni gala arrived. The ultra-luxurious downtown hotel was decorated beautifully. However, the darkest corner of the grand hall felt like a dead zone.Brooks, Carter, and Harrison were dressed in expensive tuxedos, but they looked terrible. These once popular boys had all lost weight. Their eyes were dark and hollow, completely drained of life."Harrison?" A pretty junior in an expensive gown walked over, blushing as she offered him a glass of champagne. "Um, for the first dance later, could I..."Harrison shook his head blankly. The girl jumped and quickly scurried away.Carter leaned against a marble column, holding a glass of whiskey. He tipped his head back and downed it in one gulp. The burn scorched his throat, but it couldn't numb the despair in his chest."She's not coming back." Carter's eyes were bloodshot. "Today is the last day of the one-year mark. She didn't show up."Brooks lowered his eyes, staring out at the hall."She got a full ride to Callinger Uni

When winter arrived, Belmont Academy grew colder and colder. The usually bustling school cafeteria was dead quiet.Nova stood shivering in the middle of the room, her face pale. She was wearing a green and gold cheerleading uniform. She thought that if she wore this outfit, she could make those three boys nostalgic. However, the response she got was the sound of a table crashing to the floor.Carter kicked over the lunch table in front of him, sending plates and food flying everywhere. His eyes were bloodshot. He glared at Nova, advancing step by step."Who gave you the nerve to touch her things?" Carter's roar rattled the cafeteria windows.Nova stumbled backward in terror, tears spilling from her eyes. "I... I just wanted to join the cheer squad.""The coach said I had the right figure and let me try on this old uniform...""The right figure?" Carter closed the distance. "Do you really think you deserve to wear that?"Carter's voice cut through the dead silence."Take it off. Now."N

Two whole months passed.Without Ivy and Oliver's thirty million dollars, the lives of these three boys completely devolved into a mess.Carter lost the massive field budget for the baseball team, and even their daily practices were restricted. His uncontrollable temper became increasingly hard to manage. He was a ticking time bomb on the field.Brooks wandered around like a ghost all day, sitting outside that cheer practice room door that had been permanently boarded up, ignoring everyone. But the most direct impact was on the Student Council. With the funding gone, the heating in the student council room was broken. It was freezing."Dammit, this place is like an icebox!"Nova slammed the files in her hand onto the desk in frustration. She was wearing a thick cashmere coat, but she still rubbed her arms, marching toward Harrison, who sat behind the desk."Harrison, can you do something about this damn heat? I'm freezing to death!"Harrison sat in his chair, his eyes bloodshot from st

The plane broke through the clouds, leaving the city far behind.I leaned against the window, watching the buildings grow smaller and smaller below. Calmly, I popped the SIM card out of my phone, snapped it in half, and tossed it into the trash bag.I left cleanly, leaving absolutely nothing behind at Belmont Academy.Early the next morning, a strange tension hung over the school hallways.Brooks, Carter, and Harrison were braced for a fight. The three of them hadn't slept at all. They were waiting by the front office before the sun came up.Carter clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white. He kicked the trash can next to him. "Even if Oliver buys the whole school, I won't let Nova lose!"For once, Harrison didn't try to stop Carter's outburst. His brows were tightly knitted. He yanked at his tie. That usually calm face of his looked tense today. "Oliver is notoriously overprotective of her. With the way Ivy was acting last night, she's absolutely capable of forcing her brother t
