Chapter 3

작가: J.X cross
I sit in the study and look at the Bellini family’s internal network once more.

There are only ten minutes left before the purge order takes full effect.

In ten minutes, I will no longer belong to the Bellini family.

I will no longer have the protection of their name.

I will no longer be able to command the men stationed at the East District docks.

And I will no longer be Adrian Bellini’s fiancée.

Still, I do not click Withdraw.

I simply stare at the line marked Pending Confirmation for a long time.

Then I close the internal network and open my email.

After scrolling down three pages, I finally find a private recruitment email from the Moretti family dated three months ago.

It is almost as if they knew this day would come.

The message is very short.

They are willing to give me an independent squad, three harbor routes, and a seat in the inner council.

The offer has no expiration date.

I switch back to the internal network and watch the purge order’s status change to Approved.

For some reason, I let out a quiet breath.

So leaving Adrian is not as hard as I thought it would be.

For one fleeting moment, I even feel a lightness I have not felt in a long time.

Just then, my phone lights up.

It is a message from my friend, Leo.

He sends several in a row, every word bristling with barely restrained anger.

Vivian, I saw Adrian at the underground club.

He brought Celine with him, along with a group from Bellini.

They’re gambling.

Celine is practically sitting in his lap.

Now they’re all egging them on, saying whoever loses has to kiss their partner.

The next second, a video comes through.

The footage is shaky.

Inside the dim private room, wineglasses, chips, and cards are scattered across the table.

Adrian sits in the center of the couch, two buttons open at his collar, a faint, alcohol-warmed smile on his face.

Celine sits beside him, her shoulder almost pressed against his arm.

Her cheeks are flushed as she lowers her head, looking embarrassed.

But from beginning to end, she does not move even half an inch away.

Someone shouts,

“Adrian, rules are rules.”

“You lost, so you’ve got two choices.”

“Either kiss Celine right now, or call Vivian and have your fiancée come over so you can kiss her instead.”

The room erupts in laughter.

“Call her! Let’s see if Miss Vivian is still willing to give you that much face.”

“Didn’t you two just have a fight? Perfect timing. Make up with her.”

“Or don’t bother her at all. Celine is right here, isn’t she?”

Everyone knows Adrian and I have been fighting badly.

That is why they laugh with such excitement.

As if they are all waiting to watch me be humiliated.

Celine lifts her eyes to Adrian, a cautious little expectation hidden inside them.

Adrian frowns.

He seems irritated by the noise.

After a few seconds of silence, he still takes out his phone.

When the call connects, his voice is hard.

“Vivian, what I said earlier about the engagement was my fault. But you shouldn’t keep deliberately making things hard for Celine.”

I say nothing.

He pauses.

Then his tone turns cold again.

“Come over now and apologize to Celine in front of everyone. I’ll let this go.”

I hold the phone and listen quietly.

Adrian loses patience quickly.

“Is lowering your head once really that hard for you?”

I look at the Moretti family’s email on my computer screen, and suddenly, I feel very calm.

“Adrian, I did nothing wrong. I’ll say it one more time. I will not apologize to her.”

The other end of the line goes silent for a moment.

Then his anger breaks through completely.

“Vivian, how long are you going to keep making a scene over this?”

“Since you refuse to come and apologize, listen carefully. Didn’t you suspect there was something between us? I lost the game. I’m going to kiss Celine right now and make your paranoia a reality.”

I hang up.

A few minutes later, Leo sends another video.

This one is even more chaotic than the last.

People are whistling inside the room. Someone is pounding on the table.

Adrian stands, picks up a glass from the table, and drains it in one swallow.

Celine hurriedly reaches for his sleeve, her voice trembling softly.

“Mr. Adrian, forget it. We don’t have to play anymore.”

“Please don’t be angry with Miss Vivian because of me.”

Adrian gives a cold laugh.

“Who says I’m not playing?”

The moment the words leave his mouth, he reaches out and grips Celine by the waist.

Amid the gasps and cheers filling the room, he lowers his head and kisses her.

Celine stiffens for a second.

Then she closes her eyes, her fingers gently clutching his shirt.

When I see it, pain still cuts through my chest despite myself.

But it fades quickly.

Like the last thin thread between us has finally been snapped by his own hand.

I close the video.

Then I open that email again.

In the reply box, I type only one sentence.

I accept your offer.

I may not want another relationship for a very long time."I tighten my fingers around the spoon."Is waiting for me worth it?"Matteo is silent for a moment."Vivian, I am not treating my concern for yo

After Adrian leaves, I sit alone in the council chamber for a long time.Matteo knocks and enters with a file in his hand."I've finished my notes on next quarter's East Harbor distribution plan. I am in the council chamber when a guard enters and says a visitor from New York is asking for me.I assume it is one of Moretti's business partners and tell him to let the visitor in.The door opens.Adrian walks through it.He has lost weight. His cheeks are slightly hollow, and dark shadows sit beneath his eyes. His white shirt is badly creased, as if he came here directly from the airport."Who gave you this address?" I ask."I used the computer in your old office. I found a way into your email."My brows draw together. The old account will have to be shut down. I will have Moretti's technical team reinforce the new one as well."Why are you here?""Give me a little time. Let me talk to you.""There is nothing I need to hear.""Vivian."He takes one step closer."Do you have to treat me like this? At least give me a chance to explain."I look at him, and all at once, I am tired.I check the time."Ten minutes. You leave before my meeting begins."Adrian freezes, as if he did not ex

  • Leaving the Family, Leaving You   Chapter 7

During my first week with Moretti, I give nearly every waking hour to the family.I am the first person in the council chamber each morning and the last to leave at night. On Friday afternoon, I am presenting my findings on the East Harbor accounts when my phone vibrates. It is a message from my mother.Vivian, Adrian is here again. He has been standing downstairs for two hours. Should I let him up?I frown and type back.Don't. I'll call him.I step out of the meeting room and dial Adrian's number."What exactly are you trying to do?""I only want to see you." His voice is low. "You cut off every trail and blocked every way I had to contact you. I don't know where else to look."I take a slow breath."Ending the engagement was not an empty threat. Adrian, we are over."He says nothing. After several seconds, I continue."Leave. And do not go to my mother again.""And if I refuse?""Do not force me to stand against you, Adrian."A long sigh passes through the receiver."What do I have

I do not listen any longer.I end the call. The screen goes dark, but I remain seated in my Chicago apartment for a long time.Afternoon light cuts through the blinds, falling across the unopened suitcases and the bare wooden floor.By the time the room begins to dim, I finally get up and unpack.I have just folded the last of my clothes into the wardrobe when my phone rings.Adrian's name flashes across the screen.I stare at it for a long time before answering."Vivian."His voice is raw, as if he has not slept all night."I checked the airport footage. You really left New York.""Yes."Silence stretches between us."Send me your address. I'll come get you.""No.""Vivian!"His voice rises sharply.I listen without anger and without the ache I once would have felt. There is only a faint, bone-deep exhaustion."Adrian," I say, "our engagement is over. I thought you understood that."The line goes quiet. After a long moment, he forces out the words."I never agreed to that.""It takes
