Chapter 3

Author: Midnight Mouse
Elena's usually calm eyes widened in shock. "What the hell are you talking about?!"

A flicker of guilt crossed her face, then gave way to unmistakable anger.

She stepped forward and instinctively shielded Jake behind her. "Jake was only joking upstairs. Why have you suddenly become so petty? Just to get back at him, you actually said something that disgusting!"

This was the first time Caleb had ever seen her so angry. Her reaction startled him, but the disappointment in his heart only grew heavier.

One accusation was all it took to make her this furious. The mutual respect they'd always shared was gone, along with the protection she'd once promised him.

Who would believe there was nothing going on between them?

"Uncle Caleb, don't get the wrong idea." Jake stepped forward to explain, but his smug smile didn't fade in the slightest. "I've been overseas for too long, so I'm pretty blunt. You'll have to forgive me."

Caleb ignored him and looked at Elena instead. "I was joking too. Why are you getting so worked up? Unless I actually hit a nerve. Do you really want to marry him?"

He wanted to believe her. If Elena denied it, he would choose to trust her.

Unfortunately, she didn't.

"Enough!" Elena shouted and swept the soup bowl off the dining table.

The bowl shattered against the floor. Scalding soup and shards of porcelain flew through the air, and a jagged piece of ceramic sliced into Caleb's arm.

"Ah!" He sucked in a sharp breath and clutched his arm with his other hand. Blood seeped through his fingers.

Elena froze for a moment.

She was about to step forward when Jake grabbed his suitcase and headed for the door. "I shouldn't have come back. My parents are both gone. What home do I even have anymore? I'll leave right now. I won't disturb the happy couple."

With that, he walked out.

The moment he stepped into the courtyard, Elena rushed after him and wrapped both arms tightly around his waist. "Stop it. This is your home! Anyone can leave, but not you!"

'So this is Jake's home,' Caleb thought.

Yet on the day they got married, when Elena had brought Caleb here, she'd told him the same thing. "This is your home from now on."

Apparently, those words no longer counted.

Caleb let out a bitter laugh. Bean-sized tears fell to the floor as he got up and returned to his room.

He treated his wound and wrapped it in a bandage. Then he crawled numbly beneath the covers.

All night long, he dreamed of the people and events from his past. His father, Keith Wallace, who had died with a broken heart. The parents, who had slapped him and forced him to leave school.

But when Caleb woke with a start, those slender hands were no longer there to soothe him.

...

The next morning, Caleb woke to find the space beside him still cold. He stared blankly at it for a long while before throwing off the covers and getting up to wash.

The moment he reached the first floor, he heard hushed voices nearby.

"Shh! Keep it down. Mr. Jake just got back and is still adjusting to the time difference. Ms. Elena stayed up talking with him all night. They didn't go to bed until dawn, so don't wake them."

"She really dotes on Mr. Jake. She not only cleaned his room herself but also gave us instructions for all three meals. She's so attentive and considerate. Even Mr. Caleb doesn't get that kind of treatment, does he?"

"That's nothing. Ms. Elena used to spoil Mr. Jake even more. Anyone who didn't know better would think she was raising her nephew, but anyone who didn't know they were related might think..."

"Ahem! Enough. Get back to work!"

When the service staff saw Caleb coming downstairs, their expressions changed instantly. They fell silent and scattered.

Even though he'd already prepared himself for this, hearing it still made his heart ache.

Caleb showed no reaction. He walked straight into the dining room, finished breakfast, and immediately left the house.

Today was the anniversary of Keith's death.

In previous years, Elena would make the necessary preparations, cancel all her work, and personally accompany Caleb to pay his respects to his father.

But now that Jake was back, she couldn't even be bothered to pretend.

…

Caleb went to the law firm first and handed the divorce agreement to Alex Cooper. Then he bought Keith's favorite cigarettes, liquor, and snacks before taking a taxi to the cemetery.

"Dad, I'm getting divorced. You always said I shouldn't settle. Maybe I really did take after you in that regard. But don't worry. Even if no one loves me, I'll still love myself."

Caleb leaned against the gravestone and talked to his father's photograph for a long time. He didn't force himself to leave until noon.

But the moment he stood up, Jake appeared with a group of bodyguards, arrogance written all over his face.

He raised a sledgehammer and brought it crashing down on Keith's gravestone.

The gravestone split in two, and Keith's smiling photograph fluttered to the ground.

No one knew how dangerous those hours had been inside the operating room. Nor did anyone know that as Elena lay unconscious, she had fallen into a dream so vivid that it felt completely real. And every moment of it revolved around Caleb. She remembered the first time they met. He had splashed coffee all over her face, and his words had been sharp and distant. Yet beneath the coldness in his eyes, she'd glimpsed wariness and vulnerability. For some reason, she hadn't been angry with him at all. Instead, she'd asked him to marry her.Over the three years of their marriage, they had gradually come to know and understand each other. There had been no grand d

The officer paused before continuing and gave Caleb the final outcome as plainly as he could. "Jake Lawson has been diagnosed with a severe mental disorder and was deemed to have been experiencing an episode when he committed the crimes."Under the law, he is not criminally responsible for his actions. After extensive review and evaluation, the only option was to release him without a conviction."The result was absurd and cold, almost too cruel to accept.Caleb tightened his grip on his phone as fury burst from his throat. "Why? Why can a murderer be released without punishment?!"Keith had died without ever finding peace. Caleb had endured years of pain and humiliation. Alex had lost his life for nothing. And yet, because of a single psychiatric evaluation, Jake had escaped every consequence.Caleb couldn't accept it. How could he possibly accept it?!But no matter how unwilling he was to let it go, there was nothing the police could do."We're required to handle the case acc

"Don't be afraid. It's me." Elena's voice was hoarse, heavy with an apology that had come far too late. "Caleb, I came to pay my respects to Alex. I wanted to light a candle for him."Caleb instantly became fully alert. He didn't turn to look at her.His eyes remained fixed on Alex's portrait. "You don't need to. I think I made myself clear enough. We're strangers now. And as for Alex, what right do you have to come here and pay your respects when you're the one who caused his death?"Elena could no longer hold herself back. She immediately crouched in front of him, her eyes filled with regret and remorse. "It's not what you think."She didn't make excuses or try to shift the blame.Instead, she told him the truth. "I never intended to hurt Alex. Jake went behind my back and ordered his men to do it. Of course, I can't completely wash my hands of what happened. But I want you to know that I never meant for any of this to happen."And I never protected Jake because I loved him. Hi

The moment Elena saw the divorce decree, her whole body began to shake. She had barely recovered from the truth that had just come to light when another wave of panic swept over her.Caleb had come prepared. Before she could even apologize, he had already severed the only bond that still tied them together."When did you do this?" Her voice was hoarse and dry, trembling with disbelief and panic. She staggered forward and took the divorce decree from him with a shaking hand."The day Jake came back to the country," Caleb replied softly. His cold eyes now held nothing but distance, as though she were a stranger. "Elena, we're over. I've never been able to tolerate even the slightest flaw."From the moment I found out you married me with an ulterior motive, there was no way we could stay together."As of today, our marriage is over. From now on, we have nothing to do with each other."His words were gentle, yet each one cut like a blade, severing every bond forged over the years th

The OLED screen suddenly lit up, drawing everyone's attention. The first image to appear was high-definition security footage from a camera positioned directly across from the graves of Jake's parents. In the footage, Jake arrived at the gravesite alone. He took out the blood and paint he'd prepared beforehand, then deftly scrawled two lines across the gravestone. His expression was vicious and obsessive, without a trace of grief. He even spoke to the gravestone as though his parents could hear him. "You can't blame me. You're the ones who left me alone in this world. I only have Aunt Elena now."As my parents, you should be helping me. As long as I get Caleb out of the way, Elena will belong to me alone!"The footage completely disproved the accusation that Caleb had deliberately desecrated the Lawsons' graves. Then a second video appeared. It was footage from the day of the trial, when Caleb had received a video showing that his lawyer and best friend had been kidnapped.Insid

As soon as Caleb finished speaking, another wave of heated discussion swept through the venue. The media went wild. Cameras clicked nonstop as journalists scrambled to capture the best angles."This is unbelievable! The Coleman heiress fell in love with her own adopted nephew, then married another man to cover it up and even had someone killed!""Well, this just got interesting. After everything Elena has done, can she still take over the family and become the next head of the Coleman Group?""Get this on camera! This story is worth a fortune. It's definitely making tomorrow's headlines!"Faced with everyone's accusations and speculation, Elena didn't care in the slightest.Something else had shocked her: Caleb already knew. She'd kept this secret for so long. She had intended to tell him the truth about their complicated relationship after today, yet somehow, he'd found out anyway. Even though the truth wasn't what he thought. And had his friend really died? But how?!She had
