Chapter 3

مؤلف: Seeky
Two days left. It was also my fifth anniversary with Hale.

I confirmed the time with him, and he replied right away.

Sunday morning, I put on the dress Leah had given me and got ready for our date.

I went to the restaurant we'd agreed on and sat down at our reserved table.

I ordered our two favorite drinks.

He loved the ice cream there.

When the first one melted, I ordered another. Then the second one melted too.

I waited three whole hours.

My calls wouldn't go through, and my messages went unanswered. I already knew where he probably was.

It wasn't until nine that night that he finally texted me.

"Sorry, Leah was really upset today. She went alone to the border where her father died, so I rushed over as soon as I heard. I'll make it up to you in a few days. You don't mind, do you?"

He even sent a photo.

Leah stood at the border with Hale beside her.

He was holding her hand and pulling her into his arms.

It was time to reject the mate bond fate had given us.

The two of them were better suited to each other anyway.

I stared at their photo and took a deep breath to steady myself.

Still, I couldn't stop the bitterness from rising in my chest.

The next morning, Hale walked in carrying a bouquet of lilies.

The moment I saw the earnest look on his face, my heart raced wildly despite everything.

Then he walked straight past me toward Leah's room. He knocked on the door and stepped inside.

"Leah, are you feeling better today? These lilies are for you. I hope you'll be happy every day from now on."

Leah's voice was still hoarse from crying so much.

"I'm okay, Hale. I'm much better, thank you."

I walked over to Leah's room too, digging my nails into my palms to keep my emotions in check.

"Hale, you're here early."

At the sound of my voice, he visibly froze, and a flicker of guilt crossed his face.

"Uh... Beatrice. Yesterday was our fifth anniversary."

Remorse crept into his voice.

"I knew I was forgetting something. Don't worry, I'll make it up to you."

"But you remembered to buy her flowers."

"I passed a flower shop on the way. She's always loved lilies, and they weren't expensive."

"We've been together for five years, and the only time you ever bought me flowers was when we first started dating."

Hale's face flushed scarlet, but his embarrassment quickly gave way to anger.

"Are you done? Even if you're my fated mate, you can't expect me to devote all my time and energy to you! Why do you have to make an issue out of every little thing?"

Marcus heard the commotion and came striding over.

"You're at it again!" Marcus jabbed a finger in my face. "If Leah's father hadn't saved me back then, do you think this family would still be here, living such a peaceful, happy life? We owe her a life debt. What right do you have to compete with her for attention?"

I had no interest in competing with her.

I just couldn't understand what the mate bond meant anymore.

But no one thought that question was worth answering.

So I left the house and went alone to the Moon Goddess's statue.

As Alphas, we had the power to reject a mate bond without the other person's consent.

I tried to reach his wolf through our mate link, only to discover he'd blocked me there too.

Of course. Even acknowledging my existence was apparently too much effort.

Standing before the Moon Goddess, I chanted my oath and rejected Hale as my fated mate.

Searing pain tore through me, sending violent tremors through my entire body.

But I knew this was something I had to do.

Swallowing my grief, I returned home.

That night, Leah stood outside my door holding a steaming bowl of meat stew.

"Beatrice! Hale didn't mean what he said. You two are fated mates. Your union will make our pack stronger. He specifically asked the kitchen to save this stew for you. He knows how much you love it, so he asked me to bring it up for you."

Looking into her earnest eyes, I suddenly felt utterly exhausted.

She accepted all the love that should have been mine without ever feeling guilty about it.

She could throw me the tiniest scrap of kindness, and everyone would praise her for how thoughtful and generous she was.

The saddest part was that she had never even realized how deeply she was hurting me.

Later that night, I checked my banking app.

I had about 2,600 dollars left, savings I'd painstakingly built up since my school days from coaching pups' fitness classes, handing out flyers, and working security jobs for the council.

It was enough to keep me going for a while at the Wasteland Pack. I'd figure out the rest once I got there.

I got everything in order and lay back down.

The fluorescent tube hummed overhead.

The attic was empty, but for the first time, I felt truly at peace.

Mom found out from Leah that I'd come back.On the phone, her voice was hoarse and shaky."Baby, where are you? Let me come get you and take you home, okay?""No need." I leaned back in my chair. "I'll come see you today."After hanging up, I stood by the window for a long time.I wondered what it would be like to see them again. That evening, I stood outside the house in a sharply tailored trench coat. The front door was wide open.Mom, once the proud Luna of the pack, was now nothing but skin and bone. With her hands slick with grease, she stood in the kitchen, hurriedly sprinkling chili powder over the grilled meat. The instant I stepped into the living room, her legs gave out and she fell to her knees."Beatrice... I was wrong. I finally understand that now!"Dad rose from the couch, his lips trembling."You're home. That's all that matters. That's all that matters."Marcus came charging down the stairs, tripped on the rug, and stumbled toward me."Beatrice, I don't deserve to be y

In the fourth year, construction of the Wasteland Pack was completed ahead of schedule. With the Alpha King's commendation in hand, I finally took some well-earned time off.Cyrus drove the off-road truck, his knuckles white around the wheel the entire way, his usual calm doing little to hide the reluctance in his eyes."When are you coming back? What if you like the other packs better because they're more lively than ours?"I looked at his profile and laughed softly."Even if they're livelier, that's not where I belong. I'll rest for a few days, then come home."He dropped me off at the airport in the neighboring pack's territory.Back in my old pack, I headed straight for the barbecue place."Double the spice, please."A moment later, a server approached my table.Menu in hand, she froze the instant she saw me."Beatrice?"The server was Leah.Four years ago, the whole family had treated her like the center of their world. Now she wore a grease-stained apron and looked worn and exhau

For them, every day without me was a slow, lingering torment.During the first month, Mom was still frantically asking around.By the fifth month, she had stopped asking because the Alpha King had issued our pack a formal warning.By the tenth month, she could barely sleep at all.She had to rely on heavy doses of sleeping pills just to get a few hours of rest.In the middle of the night, she would wander to the attic like a ghost. She refused to lock it, clinging to the fantasy that one day I would come home, walk through that door, and tell her how tired I was.Without me, pack affairs fell into chaos.Dad worked himself ragged until his hair turned completely white. One night, as he flipped through a photo album, his fingers suddenly went still."Have you noticed?" His voice was hoarse."Ever since Leah joined our family, Beatrice hasn't appeared in a single family photo.""She was always there. Yet somehow, no one ever seemed to see her."At that, Mom burst into tears.Marcus didn'

The day I arrived at the Wasteland, I realized the conditions there were even worse than I'd imagined.Sandstorms sent walls of yellow dust sweeping across the land, reducing visibility to less than thirty feet. The person sent to meet me was Beta Cyrus Reed, handpicked by the Alpha King. His eyes were sharp but held no hostility."Beatrice? The Alpha King talks about you all the time. He says you're the one who's going to turn this wasteland around."I hopped down from the truck and surveyed the windbreak shelters made of reinforced steel panels and the barren landscape stretching as far as I could see.It was much more spacious than the attic. I would never have to hunch over again. That was enough for me.After switching to the encrypted communications device I'd been issued, I glanced at my old phone. There wasn't a single message.Typical.I couldn't tell whether I felt bitter or relieved.Maybe it was a little of both. Either way, I no longer cared. From that day on, I threw myse

Mom began searching for me frantically.Using her authority as Luna, she contacted one pack after another, trying to find out where I was.The answer was always the same."Top secret. Access denied."Refusing to give up, she dragged Dad straight to the Alpha King.He turned them away without hesitation."Beatrice volunteered for a classified project. Her whereabouts are confidential and no longer any concern of your family. You have no right to interfere."Mom left looking like an empty shell.Dad followed silently behind her.Back home, Mom stood at the attic entrance and stared inside for a long time. The attic was barely twenty inches high, and it didn't even have a window. The air was thick with dust and mildew.Somehow, she had never really noticed any of it before.Marcus stopped reporting for pack duty too.He locked himself in his room, scrolling endlessly through the group chat.He replayed Mom's voice message."Little Leah is finally taking her first trip!"Then he found his

Arthur was shown into the living room.He sat on the couch and glanced at my parents, who were all smiles, already dressed and ready for their trip."What brings you here?" Dad asked.Arthur set the paper package down on the coffee table, his voice grave."Years ago, when that attack happened at the border, I managed to save a video recording of the incident."Mom looked at him, confused.Arthur spoke slowly, clearly uneasy."When the rogues attacked your son, the first person to rush in and save him wasn't Gavin. It was a young wolf who happened to be passing by."The room went deathly silent."Gavin wasn't the one who saved Marcus."Everyone in the room was stunned."After the young wolf pushed Marcus out of harm's way, the rogue turned on Gavin, who was standing nearby.""Gavin panicked. Desperate to save himself, he grabbed the young wolf and tried to use him as a shield against the rogue's silver blade. But Gavin lost his footing, and the blade struck and killed him instead.""He
