Chapter 2

مؤلف: Seeky
Three days left.

I never imagined that even the attic would soon be taken from me.

While making breakfast, Mom casually mentioned it to Marcus.

"Once Beatrice leaves for the joint patrol, we'll tear down the attic partition. Leah wants a puppy."

Marcus agreed without hesitation. A puppy would make Leah happy.

Dad nodded as he took another bite of his sandwich.

"Sounds good. The attic's small, but it's the perfect size for a puppy."

"That's too much trouble." Leah lowered her head, twisting the hem of her shirt between her fingers. "Besides, Beatrice will need somewhere to stay when she comes back to visit."

Marcus smiled and ruffled her hair.

"Your happiness comes first. We'll worry about the rest later."

I sat quietly at the table, eating my fried eggs.

No one had asked if I even wanted to take Dad's place on the joint patrol.

No one had asked whether I'd been provided with housing or when I'd be coming home.

They just needed me gone. Then they could erase every trace that I'd ever lived here.

That afternoon, Hale came over carrying two elegant gift boxes.

In front of everyone, he opened the first.

Inside was a moonstone necklace, which he carefully fastened around Leah's neck.

"It's been blessed by the Moon Goddess. It wasn't easy to get."

Leah stroked the pendant with delight as my parents and Marcus showered her with compliments.

Then Hale tossed the second box into my arms. Inside was a wolf fang.

"Broke it off a rogue during an interrogation. Thought it might help you keep the wolves under your command in line."

I was extremely sensitive to smells. I'd told him that countless times.

The moment I caught a whiff of the rogue's scent still clinging to the fang, my stomach turned.

Yet somehow, he never forgot anything that mattered to Leah.

"This fang reeks. Did you forget I'm sensitive to smells?"

Realization flashed across Hale's face, but it was quickly replaced by impatience.

"I was in a hurry, so I only gave it a quick clean. Don't be so picky. If you don't want it, give it to Leah's new puppy."

"Whatever."

Fighting back my nausea, I dropped the fang straight into the nearest trash can and headed upstairs.

Before Hale could call after me, Leah's soft voice drifted over.

"Hale, don't be angry. Beatrice is a pureblood. A wolf fang isn't really an appropriate gift for her."

Instead of arguing, Hale lowered his voice to comfort her.

"Forget about her. By the way, I ordered you a cake. I know how much you love sweets."

He couldn't even be bothered to say another word to me.

It was as if I wasn't there at all. All he could see was Leah.

Somehow, that hurt more than any insult ever could.

Toward evening, I was walking down the hallway with a glass of water when Dad's puzzled voice drifted out of the living room.

"What's gotten into Beatrice these past few days? Why has she been so quiet?"

I stopped in my tracks, my fingers instinctively tightening around the glass.

"She's always been difficult. Just ignore her," Mom said breezily, cutting him off. "She probably found out we're not taking her on the trip and is giving us the silent treatment. Leave her alone for a few days. She'll get over it."

Dad fell silent for a moment, then let the matter drop.

I stared at the faint ripples spreading across the water in my glass, then quietly walked away.

It wasn't that they hadn't noticed something was wrong.

They had. They'd simply decided it didn't matter.

That night, while working on resource extraction plans for the Wasteland Pack, I happened to notice several purchase notifications.

Designer clothes, totaling more than 6,000 dollars.

The shipping address was our house, and the payment had been made under Dad's name.

He'd ordered Leah a custom ski outfit.

Dad was willing to spend more than 6,000 dollars on her, while I couldn't even get a space heater for the attic.

Looking a little sheepish, Leah pulled a new dress from a shopping bag.

"Beatrice, this dress is totally your style. I picked it out just for you. I hope you like it."

I rarely wore dresses, and this one didn't even look like it would fit me.

Still, I accepted it and thanked her.

In this house, at least she still saw me.

Even if she didn't know me at all.

That night, I received a message from the Alpha King.

"Beatrice Carter, you're about to become the youngest Alpha ever! Your appointment has been approved. Report to the Wasteland Pack within three days. Everyone's waiting for you."

Then he added another line.

"Your leadership and surveying skills are irreplaceable. Don't worry. Everything's been arranged for you here. You've got this!"

I read the message over and over again.

Someone was waiting for me.

Someone needed me.

Someone thought I was irreplaceable. They just weren't anyone in this house.

Mom found out from Leah that I'd come back.On the phone, her voice was hoarse and shaky."Baby, where are you? Let me come get you and take you home, okay?""No need." I leaned back in my chair. "I'll come see you today."After hanging up, I stood by the window for a long time.I wondered what it would be like to see them again. That evening, I stood outside the house in a sharply tailored trench coat. The front door was wide open.Mom, once the proud Luna of the pack, was now nothing but skin and bone. With her hands slick with grease, she stood in the kitchen, hurriedly sprinkling chili powder over the grilled meat. The instant I stepped into the living room, her legs gave out and she fell to her knees."Beatrice... I was wrong. I finally understand that now!"Dad rose from the couch, his lips trembling."You're home. That's all that matters. That's all that matters."Marcus came charging down the stairs, tripped on the rug, and stumbled toward me."Beatrice, I don't deserve to be y

In the fourth year, construction of the Wasteland Pack was completed ahead of schedule. With the Alpha King's commendation in hand, I finally took some well-earned time off.Cyrus drove the off-road truck, his knuckles white around the wheel the entire way, his usual calm doing little to hide the reluctance in his eyes."When are you coming back? What if you like the other packs better because they're more lively than ours?"I looked at his profile and laughed softly."Even if they're livelier, that's not where I belong. I'll rest for a few days, then come home."He dropped me off at the airport in the neighboring pack's territory.Back in my old pack, I headed straight for the barbecue place."Double the spice, please."A moment later, a server approached my table.Menu in hand, she froze the instant she saw me."Beatrice?"The server was Leah.Four years ago, the whole family had treated her like the center of their world. Now she wore a grease-stained apron and looked worn and exhau

For them, every day without me was a slow, lingering torment.During the first month, Mom was still frantically asking around.By the fifth month, she had stopped asking because the Alpha King had issued our pack a formal warning.By the tenth month, she could barely sleep at all.She had to rely on heavy doses of sleeping pills just to get a few hours of rest.In the middle of the night, she would wander to the attic like a ghost. She refused to lock it, clinging to the fantasy that one day I would come home, walk through that door, and tell her how tired I was.Without me, pack affairs fell into chaos.Dad worked himself ragged until his hair turned completely white. One night, as he flipped through a photo album, his fingers suddenly went still."Have you noticed?" His voice was hoarse."Ever since Leah joined our family, Beatrice hasn't appeared in a single family photo.""She was always there. Yet somehow, no one ever seemed to see her."At that, Mom burst into tears.Marcus didn'

The day I arrived at the Wasteland, I realized the conditions there were even worse than I'd imagined.Sandstorms sent walls of yellow dust sweeping across the land, reducing visibility to less than thirty feet. The person sent to meet me was Beta Cyrus Reed, handpicked by the Alpha King. His eyes were sharp but held no hostility."Beatrice? The Alpha King talks about you all the time. He says you're the one who's going to turn this wasteland around."I hopped down from the truck and surveyed the windbreak shelters made of reinforced steel panels and the barren landscape stretching as far as I could see.It was much more spacious than the attic. I would never have to hunch over again. That was enough for me.After switching to the encrypted communications device I'd been issued, I glanced at my old phone. There wasn't a single message.Typical.I couldn't tell whether I felt bitter or relieved.Maybe it was a little of both. Either way, I no longer cared. From that day on, I threw myse

Mom began searching for me frantically.Using her authority as Luna, she contacted one pack after another, trying to find out where I was.The answer was always the same."Top secret. Access denied."Refusing to give up, she dragged Dad straight to the Alpha King.He turned them away without hesitation."Beatrice volunteered for a classified project. Her whereabouts are confidential and no longer any concern of your family. You have no right to interfere."Mom left looking like an empty shell.Dad followed silently behind her.Back home, Mom stood at the attic entrance and stared inside for a long time. The attic was barely twenty inches high, and it didn't even have a window. The air was thick with dust and mildew.Somehow, she had never really noticed any of it before.Marcus stopped reporting for pack duty too.He locked himself in his room, scrolling endlessly through the group chat.He replayed Mom's voice message."Little Leah is finally taking her first trip!"Then he found his

Arthur was shown into the living room.He sat on the couch and glanced at my parents, who were all smiles, already dressed and ready for their trip."What brings you here?" Dad asked.Arthur set the paper package down on the coffee table, his voice grave."Years ago, when that attack happened at the border, I managed to save a video recording of the incident."Mom looked at him, confused.Arthur spoke slowly, clearly uneasy."When the rogues attacked your son, the first person to rush in and save him wasn't Gavin. It was a young wolf who happened to be passing by."The room went deathly silent."Gavin wasn't the one who saved Marcus."Everyone in the room was stunned."After the young wolf pushed Marcus out of harm's way, the rogue turned on Gavin, who was standing nearby.""Gavin panicked. Desperate to save himself, he grabbed the young wolf and tried to use him as a shield against the rogue's silver blade. But Gavin lost his footing, and the blade struck and killed him instead.""He
