Chapter 4 The Lies

Author: Leon Moore
The moment I asked her mother to come out, Winnie immediately panicked.

Mrs. Romger stepped outside, her gaze flickering suspiciously between the two of us before finally settling on me.

She approached respectfully. Then, I turned to Elias and let out a cold laugh, demanding, "Tell him who the real Whites' heiress is."

Without any hesitation, she replied, "Of course it's you…"

Yet, before Mrs. Romger could finish, Winnie suddenly cut her off, her voice rising sharply. She dropped to her knees with a thud, her face already streaked with tears. "We grew up together—why do you have to make this so ugly?

"Is it my fault that Elias and I fell in love with each other? I'm even begging you now, so what more do you want?"

Mrs. Romger furrowed her brows tightly, her hands clenching.

Before I could react, she suddenly made me beg. "Of course she is. How dare you make the heiress kneel!"

I looked at her in disbelief, but the sharp pain in my knees told me this was real.

Winnie quietly let out a breath of relief.

"Amelia, just because you are a White doesn't mean you are the heiress." Elias chuckled coldly. "Winnie is the Whites' only daughter. She's even treated you like a sister all these years and paid for your education. Learn how to be grateful."

He walked over and crouched in front of me, lowering his voice.

"I received a job offer from White Group a few days ago. Winnie arranged it for me, so if you stop making a scene, I can promise you this.

"I'll still take care of you as a mistress after I marry her. I can give you everything—except the position of being my wife."

I forced myself to look up at him through the pain. 'Is this really the man I have loved for years? Geez, I still remember how he held me when we first became a couple and swore that he'd work and provide us with a beautiful future.

'Yet, for this fake heiress, he's willing to discard me without hesitation.'

I slapped him hard across the face. "In your dreams."

Elias' expression darkened instantly. Seeing himself as part of the Whites, he turned to Mrs. Romger, demanding, "You're Mrs. Romger, right? You still can't blur the lines between a nanny and an employer, even though Winnie and Amelia grew up together."

"She'll just keep bullying Winnie if you don't teach her a lesson," he added.

Winnie hesitated, grabbing his arm. "You're taking things too far."

He gently patted her hand, soothing her. "Once the White family is yours, you'll need to learn how to run things. You're too kind—I'm just helping you."

Watching the two of them put on this act made me feel sick.

"Keep playing the role long enough, and you'll forget it's all an act," I warned. "You know the truth best, Winnie."

The hesitation in her eyes vanished, replaced by venomous resentment. She barked at Mrs. Romger, "What are you waiting for? Drag her into the courtyard. Make her beg. She is not to be allowed to stand until she apologizes."

Mrs. Romger looked like she wanted to object, but her expression darkened as she finally called over the servants.

Under her authority, the servants hesitantly pushed me down onto the hard courtyard floor.

Winnie walked over and patted my face, her eyes holding a calculating coldness I had never seen before. "Amelia, see this? I'm in charge of the Whites now. Tell me something.

"If I were to kill you now and here, given our history, do you think Mr. White would take me in as his goddaughter? Wouldn't that make me the real heiress of the family?

The scorching sun burned my skin, and my knees felt like they were kneeling on hot coals.

I glared at her furiously. "Oh, you wouldn't dare, Winnie."

"I'm sick of being beneath you." She slapped me hard across the face. "We're both humans—what makes you better than me except a powerful father? I won't accept it. No, I won't!"

She struck me again and again, almost feral, as if she wanted to beat me to death right there.

"What the hell is going on here?"

As my vision blurred, I thought I heard Timothy's voice, only for Winnie to scream.

"Amy, I promised you a long time ago that I'd take you on a trip just for the two of us. I came right after you once I found out you came to Emerald Rise alone."By coming here, does that mean you still haven't gotten over me?"Looking at Elias' expectant expression, I suddenly remembered something.Back in college, even though I was the Whites' heiress, I never spent money recklessly and even took part-time jobs at times. There was a sense of pride in earning money with my own hands. We once made a promise—to take a romantic trip to Emerald Rise together. When he suggested bringing Winnie along, I didn't object. Now that I think about it, that was probably his way of trying to have it both ways. And only now did I understand where this strange discomfort over the past few days had been coming from.I let out a cold laugh. "You're overthinking it. I just didn't want the itinerary I made to go to waste. We're no longer a couple. Keep following me, and I'll call the police."I t

"Shut up!" Elias' face burned as he slapped Winnie hard. "You're nothing but a cheap liar. You're just a nanny's daughter, yet you wore better clothes and lived better than Amy—that's why I was fooled by you!"I was just playing around with you. "The only person I've ever loved is Amy."Looking at the expensive clothes Winnie was wearing, I let out a quiet, bitter laugh. From childhood, I had treated her like my own sister. To keep her from feeling inferior, I always gave her the best of everything. In the end, it all became the very tool she used to betray me.My father's brows knitted tighter and tighter, his gaze cold as ice as it swept over the two of them. "One is the so-called best friend my daughter treated with genuine sincerity," he said slowly, "and the other is the boyfriend she begged me to give a job to. Yet, you both had the nerve to mistreat my daughter for four years?"He turned to the housekeeper beside him. "Mrs. Romger failed to properly raise her daughter. R

Winnie had never seen me treat her so coldly before. In an instant, she went weak and collapsed onto the ground.Only then did Elias finally understand everything. He stared at her in disbelief, muttering under his breath over and over again. "You lied to me? You actually lied to me?!"Then, he suddenly turned to me, panic flooding his voice as he rushed to explain. "Amy, she deceived me. Said she could get me an internship in White Group if I stayed with her."You know people like us without backgrounds basically have no future after graduation—I just wanted a better start to give you a better life…"Looking at how pathetic he looked now, there was none of the confidence he once carried on campus.I still remembered the first time I met him—those eyes that seemed to shine like stars.…"Are you always this clueless? That's kind of cute.""Hi, I'm Elias Longheart. Student council president."My heart had raced instantly, my face flushing red.How could I not know him?I alwa

After I was hospitalized, Timothy notified my father, who was away handling a business deal.He carefully applied medicine to my wounds. "You're not the one at fault for trusting the wrong person for four years," he said quietly. "It's the deepest regret—finding out the truth about someone only after marriage."Later, he even went out to buy breakfast for me, consisting of meat and vegetables, which was nutritionally balanced."I grabbed something random," he explained. "Have a bite."'So, breakfast isn't buns and oatmeal,' I thought. Then, I turned my face away, sniffing hard to keep my tears back. "Thank you."…With Timothy taking care of me, I recovered quickly. When I stepped back into the house, I saw Mrs. Romger and a group of servants kneeling in a row, visibly trembling. At the very front were Winnie and Elias. My father sat at the head of the room, motioning for a new servant to help me sit down beside him. You were just waiting for me to miss your flight so you could come back here and meet your lover?"Yet, you have the nerve to accuse Winnie and me?"My face was so swollen I couldn't speak, but I understood clearly in my heart—he never loved me. Rather, it stemmed from a man's possessiveness.Winnie struggled to get up from the ground, her arm scraped and bleeding. She endured the pain, but panic rose in her eyes.
