Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: AAA Builder
Heather's POV

After dinner, my family and I went back to their home in the city.

Hazel pushed open the door to her bedroom and said goodnight without even looking back. Mom pulled a thin blanket from the closet and handed it to me.

"Sorry, but you'll have to take the couch tonight."

The couch was too short, so I curled up, tossing and turning. I just couldn't fall asleep.

They hadn't drawn the living room curtains. Moonlight spilled through the window and cast a perfect spotlight on the wall across from me, where a row of framed photos hung.

From left to right, they showed Hazel in kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, and high school.

I didn't know how much time had passed when I heard Mom sigh from the master bedroom. "Seeing her today… I don't know. I felt kind of bad for her."

Dad's voice drifted over from the bedroom. "What's wrong?"

"It's just… that sweatshirt she was wearing. It was the one I sent her two years ago. The sleeves are so short already," she said, then paused. "Do you think she's not doing well back in the countryside?"

Dad seemed to turn over, making the bed frame creak. "Whether she's doing well or not, that's her fate. We agreed on it back then. The two kids would draw lots, and whoever drew the short straw would stay in the countryside. She just had bad luck. What can we do about it?"

Mom fell silent briefly. "I guess you're right."

Her voice grew quieter. "Forget it. Let's not talk about it anymore. We'll take her to the bus station tomorrow. We still need to take Hazel shopping for everything she needs for the new school year."

Dad grunted lightly.

The master bedroom fell silent. I lay there in the darkness, my eyes wide open.

Memories of what happened when I was eight came rushing back, blurry and fragmented.

That day, Grandma had cheerfully taken two straws and held them tightly in her fist. "Come on, girls. Let's play a game. Pick one, any one."

I had no idea what it meant, so I reached out and pulled one at random. The moment Grandma saw which one I had picked, her face lit up.

"Oh, look at our Heather. You're so lucky. You get to stay with me."

That night, when Mom came to take Hazel away, I even ran outside to wave goodbye. I thought I was the one who had been "chosen to stay". I thought staying behind meant I had won.

It turned out that I had lost my life that very night ten years ago.

After dawn, Mom came out of the bedroom and saw that I was already dressed in my jacket. "Oh, you're up early."

"Yeah. Don't want to miss the bus."

Dad poked his head out of the kitchen, a cup in his hand. "Why don't you have breakfast before you go?"

"No, thanks. I'll grab some buns at the bus station."

Mom rummaged through her bag and pulled out a few 50-dollar bills. "Here, take this. Buy some things you'll need for college."

I didn't take them. She looked like she wanted to say more, but then Hazel came out of her bedroom, rubbing her eyes.

"Mom, which store are we going to for my laptop today? I want the latest model."

Mom's attention immediately shifted to her. "Have breakfast first. We'll go after."

I changed into my shoes by the door and quietly closed it behind me. Once I was out, I didn't head to the bus station. Instead, I hailed a cab by the roadside.

"Airport, please."

  • Left Behind for Ten Years, I Disappear   Chapter 9

Heather's POVAfter that meeting, I submitted a request to the base. It was simple."I, Heather Foster, have no family. From this point forward, I do not wish to receive or be informed of any contact requests made on my behalf by anyone claiming to be my family."Hector looked at the form, then glanced at me. "You sure?""I'm sure."He didn't say anything else before signing the form and filing it away. After that, no more notes appeared outside my tent. I heard from my coworkers that the organization continued to receive occasional requests for contact from back home during the first year.Sometimes there were two or three in a week. Sometimes several in a single day. The system rejected every one of them.By the second year, the requests became less frequent. Eventually, they stopped altogether. I wasn't sure if they had given up or finally accepted it. I didn't care to know, though. On the day my two-year term ended, Hector placed a completion certificate and a return ticke

Heather's POVMom was the first to spot me. She froze for a second, then rushed toward me. "Heather!"I stepped aside. Her arms closed around empty air, and she stumbled. She would've fallen if Dad hadn't caught her."Heather…" she muttered, her tears threatening to fall. "I finally came to see you."I glanced at her, then at Dad and Hazel. In the end, I turned to the attendant beside us. "How did they get in?"The attendant flipped through the ledger. "It says here that they're your family. The organization has also verified their identities.""I'll speak to them again and reiterate that I do not have family," I said coldly, then grabbed my first-aid kit and started toward the tent."Heather!"Dad came after me and called out from behind. "Stand right there!"I kept walking."Heather, we flew for 20-something hours to see—""I didn't ask you to."I finally stopped and turned back to look at them. "Did you guys have fun in Mondon?"They fell silent for a few seconds. Hazel

Heather's POVFor the next three months, I received messages from the organization every day.Sometimes they were from Dad. "Heather, I know you're angry, and I don't blame you. Just stay safe over there. If you need anything, tell the organization, and I'll figure something out."Other times, they were from Mom. "Heather, I've been doing a lot of reflecting lately. We really did fail you. Still, you're my daughter, and that will never change. You don't have to reply. I just want to know that you're safe."On a few occasions, they were from Hazel. "Grandma Eleanor had a stroke. It's not serious, so don't worry. I'm not asking you to come back and see her. I just wanted to let you know. Don't worry about us. Just take care of yourself."The most recent message came from both Mom and Dad two weeks ago."Heather, I just landed a new project and made some money. I'm going to save up a little more and buy us all plane tickets to see you. Wait for us.""I know you're still mad at me.

Third-Person POVWilliam and Margot stood frozen at the counter, stunned.Christine put her glasses back on and turned to search through the filing cabinet. "Heather's situation was a little special, so I remember her."She pulled out a thin file and placed it on the counter. "1590 on the SAT, the top scorer in the state. Admissions officers from the top two universities in the country both came to recruit her. She turned them all down."Margot's voice trembled. "Which one did she choose, then?"Christine fell silent. "None. She didn't apply to any colleges or universities either."William thought he had misheard. "What do you mean?""I mean Heather gave up all of her admission offers."Christine closed the file. "Our principal personally spoke with her three times. She asked if there were financial difficulties at home or if Heather was worried about the cost of college. She said no.""Then why would she—"Christine looked at them. "She said she had plans on her own. We also

Third-Person POV"I just can't stand by and watch anymore," Lynette said. She rested the laundry pole against the wall and wiped her hands. When she spoke, she sounded like she had been holding this in for years."You don't know what Heather's life has been all these years, but I saw it with my own eyes."William stood frozen in the courtyard, a cigarette still between his fingers. "What do you mean?"Lynette sighed. "When your mom brought those straws out back then, I was standing right there. They were the same length. No matter which one Heather picked, your mom would've called it the short one."The cigarette slipped from his fingers and hit the ground. He turned and rushed into the house. Eleanor was sitting at the table, calmly drinking tea, her expression still the same. "Mom? Is what Lynette said true?"She set down her cup without even looking up. "What would some outsider know?""Were those two straws the same length or not?" he questioned.Eleanor finally looked

Heather's POVThe moment the aircraft door opened, a wave of heat hit me, carrying the dusty smell of the earth. I was officially in a foreign country.A man in his 30s walked toward me. "Are you Heather Foster?"He sized me up and down, then tucked the clipboard under his arm. "I'm Hector Zimmerman, the team leader. You can call me Hector. Sorry to ask, but how old are you?""I'm 18.""18…"He shook his head. "You're the youngest volunteer I've ever had. The youngest before you was 23. Did your family agree to let you come? The conditions here are pretty tough. You signed on for two years. Just so you know, you can't just leave halfway—""I don't have a family," I clarified calmly.Hector looked at me for a couple of seconds, then gave up asking. We got into a car, and he stepped on the gas.Outside the window, the paved road turned into gravel, then dirt. I leaned back in my seat and closed my eyes, my mind blank.Five thousand miles away from home… That should be far away
