Chapter 1

Dante and I had been planning this honeymoon for years.

In the six years we had been together, we’d rarely had any time that truly belonged to us.

Dante was the Don of the Moretti family.

There was always another deal to oversee, another meeting to attend, another dispute within the family that demanded his attention.

Sometimes, we would be halfway through dinner when his phone rang.

He would leave without hesitation.

By the time he came home, the food on the table would be cold.

He always apologized the same way.

He would come up behind me, wrap his arms around my waist, and rest his chin on my shoulder.

“Just a little longer.”

“Once everything settles down, I’ll take you to the coast.”

There was a white villa there, perched on the edge of a cliff.

The sea was visible from the bedroom windows, and a flight of stone steps led down to a private beach reserved for the estate.

Three years ago, Dante bought it for me as a birthday present.

Shortly before our wedding, he pressed a tender kiss to my forehead.

“You can plan the honeymoon however you want.”

“For one whole month, there’ll be no business. No meetings. No one interrupting us.”

I had been happy for weeks.

I chose every hotel myself and changed our route three times before I was satisfied.

I even had the east-facing bedroom at the coastal villa redecorated.

Dante was a light sleeper.

The sunrise would have woken him every morning in that room, so in the end, I chose another bedroom for us.

But on the second day after our wedding, Bianca appeared at the estate.

She wore a long black dress, and her eyes were slightly red.

When she heard that we were heading for the Amalfi Coast, she spoke softly.

“You’ll be passing through Naples, won’t you?”

“My parents are buried just outside the city. The anniversary of their deaths is in a few days, and I’d like to visit them.”

My hands stilled over the suitcase.

“This is Dante’s and my honeymoon.”

The smile on Bianca’s face faltered.

“I know.”

“I only want to ride with you as far as Naples. Once I’ve visited my parents, I’ll leave. I won’t follow you to the coast.”

I didn’t answer. I turned to Dante instead.

His brow furrowed slightly, but he remained silent.

Seventeen years ago, Bianca’s parents had died in an ambush while protecting Dante’s father.

Afterward, the Moretti family had taken her in.

She had grown up on the estate with Dante.

Their deaths had left Dante with a debt of guilt he believed he could never repay.

Bianca lifted her reddened eyes to us.

“All these years, the family has sent flowers in my place.”

“This time, I only want to visit them myself on the anniversary.”

“But if that makes you uncomfortable, forget I asked.”

She forced a smile and turned to leave.

Dante stopped her.

“Bianca, come with us tomorrow morning.”

I stared at him as the hope I had been holding on to slowly sank.

Dante avoided my gaze, guilt flickering across his face.

“She’s only coming as far as Naples. It won’t affect the rest of our trip.”

“The convoy is passing through the city anyway.”

My fingers tightened around the key to the villa.

“But this is our honeymoon.”

Dante frowned.

“Ariana, she has no family left.”

“She’s only riding with the convoy for part of the journey. You don’t have to make such a big deal out of it.”

His tone wasn’t harsh, but the implication was clear.

If I continued to refuse, I would be heartless.

I would be unreasonable.

I would be the woman too jealous to show compassion to an orphan who had already lost everything.

I stayed silent for a long time before finally nodding.

“All right.”

Bianca paused in the doorway and smiled back at me.

“Thank you, Ariana.”

At the time, I had no idea that I wouldn’t even reach the end of the honeymoon that was supposed to belong to Dante and me.

Lorenzo stood behind the crowd, watching her.I placed the newspaper in a drawer already filled with clippings about her.The west port redevelopment. The Bellini-Valenti foundation. Her appearance at a charity gala. She looked more radiant in every photograph.I had been in treatment for a year.Medication bought me a few hours of sleep, but I still woke with a crushing weight on my chest. My doctor urged me to accept that the marriage was over. I understood every word and remained powerless to make my heart obey. The Moretti estate stayed exactly as she had left it.I refused to let the servants move the book by her bedside or touch the empty half of the closet. Her attorney had returned the ring with the signed divorce papers. Since

Dante's POVThe room fell silent when Ariana made her first appearance at a formal gathering of the three families. She wore a black gown with a silver eagle brooch pinned at her left shoulder. Members of the Bellini family followed in her wake.I had not spoken to her in four months. She was more radiant than I remembered and somehow more distant. Men who had once challenged her now stepped aside and bowed their heads to Miss Bellini.I stood at the other end of the ballroom without the right to approach her.Lorenzo Valenti was at her side.He bent close and said something. She turned toward him with a faint smile, and the wineglass in my hand cracked.Glass bit into my palm. Blood ran between my fingers and dripped onto the carpet.I felt nothing.I had seen her smile that way before. Once, I ran through the rain to meet her outside the university library. She shared half her scarf with me, and we crowded beneath one umbrella while she laughed all the way home.In recent years, that

Ariana's POVTwo months after returning to the Bellini family, I took control of the west port. Its director had close ties to several capos, and my father advised me to leave it alone for the time being. I spent three weeks auditing shipping records, uncovered twelve fraudulent contracts, and removed everyone involved at Monday's meeting. After word spread, fewer people questioned my authority. Some still assumed my father would eventually take back the power he had given me. When customs unexpectedly detained one of our freighters, several directors went over my head and called him.He ended the call in front of them and told them to come to me.I spent the night reviewing the declarations and traced the problem to a cargo code in the old system.By noon the following day, the ship had been cleared to leave.I did not punish anyone for bypassing me. Dante's POVThe cemetery gates closed before we arrived.Bianca argued with the caretaker while I watched my phone. Ariana had not sent a single message, and the guards assigned to retrieve her had yet to report in.I called their captain.“Did you find her?”“Don, we're at the gas station. She isn't here.”My fingers tightened around the phone.“What do you mean, she isn't there?”“We searched the store and the entire lot. We can't find the Donna, and she isn't answering her phone.”Ice slid down my spine.I thought for a second before turning toward the car.Bianca hurried after me.“The caretaker agreed to give us ten more minutes.”“Go in without me.” The sound of her voice grated on my nerves.“Dante, my parents—”“My wife is missing.”The force of my voice seemed to startle her.Bianca stopped. I yanked open the car door and ordered the driver back to the gas station. The twenty-minute drive felt suffocatingly long. I called Ariana again and again, only to hear the same dead tone

Ariana's POVHe took off his coat and draped it over my shoulders, shielding me from the bitter wind.“The Don is waiting for you at the estate.”I nodded and followed him onto the helicopter. As the door closed, I looked down at the gas station one last time. The highway stretched into the fading dusk. The guards Dante had promised to send were still nowhere in sight. The rotors kicked up a cloud of dust, and the empty parking space below quickly shrank to a gray blur.I turned away and never looked back. The Bellini estate had barely changed. The black iron gates swung open, revealing the long, illuminated drive. My father stood at the foot of the steps. Five years had left streaks of silver at his temples.I climbed out of the helicopter, suddenly at a loss for words. He held out a hand. When I hesitated, it hovered between us as his eyes slowly reddened.“You're home. That's all that matters.”The fragile composure I had been holding on to shattered.I threw my arms around him and
