Chapter 3

Author: Seeking the Deer
Mom raised me on her own after the divorce. I had been sickly since I was young, so for my sake, Mom, a highly skilled surgeon, took a position as an assistant in the pediatric department.

Wyatt lived next door and had always looked out for me. Once, I suddenly came down with a high fever while Mom was working the night shift, and Wyatt insisted on taking care of me all night, refusing to leave no matter what anyone said.

He even turned down offers from two of the top universities in the country to pursue medicine, becoming Mom's hand-picked protege. He had even promised me back then, "I want to take care of you for the rest of my life, Gloria!"

When did things start to change?

It must have started around the time Mom adopted my roommate, Wanda. She was fair and beautiful, looking so frail that she seemed like she could fall over at any moment. But she always forced herself to appear strong and said through gritted teeth, "I'm fine!"

Mom initially said, "Wanda has no parents and is in poor health, so you should take extra care of her, Gloria."

She later held Wanda in her arms, scowling deeply at me. "Wanda is so mature and resilient. Why can't you learn to be independent instead of acting like a frail princess over every tiny thing, Gloria?"

Upon seeing how upset I was, Wyatt grew to dislike Wanda even more. "That roommate of yours is such a fake! She's always acting so innocent in front of your mother!"

Wyatt's attention gradually shifted to Wanda. "Wanda has been through so much, yet she is still so resilient. You can't help but feel for her… You should just step back and let her have this, Gloria…"

On the day Wyatt and I were supposed to register our marriage, Wanda made a fuss about wanting to buy us a cake that had gone viral online to celebrate the occasion.

Wyatt went along with it without a second thought. He took a detour for her and even ran a red light to save time, causing the car to collide with a dump truck.

Just before the impact, Wyatt yanked the steering wheel, turning the car onto its side. He and Wanda were mostly unharmed, but the back seat where I was sitting was completely crushed beneath the truck's massive front end.

That was how one of the glass shards from the crash cut into my flesh and lodged itself in my body. Had the glass lodged itself in my heart? Otherwise, why was the pain so severe that it felt like my heart was about to stop beating?

I could taste blood rising in my throat as a searing pain radiated through my abdomen.

In that instant, my overwhelming instinct to survive kept me conscious and clear-headed. I refused to die just like that.

I reached out and gripped the edge of the nurses' station, slowly pulling myself up. "P-Please arrange a transfer to another hospital for me…"

The nurse glanced up at me impatiently. "We can't process a transfer without a doctor's formal diagnosis! That's the protocol!"

I forced down the metallic taste of blood in my mouth and said, "P-Please call an ambulance for me… I-I want to go to another hospital…"

"You can certainly do that." The nurse finally stood up, rapped her knuckles impatiently against the card reader on the counter, and said, "The dispatch fee is 85 dollars. You have to pay first before we make the call."

I was at a loss. I didn't have a single cent to my name. Mom suddenly demanded that I emulate Wanda's frugal and modest lifestyle ever since she moved in with us.

Wanda's monthly allowance was 1,400 dollars, while I had to submit a written request for every penny I spent.

Just the day before, I had handed Mom a request for cab fare to get to City Hall to register my marriage.

She had barely glanced at it before tossing it right back at me. "It's just a short distance. Why spend money on a cab? Wanda used to walk 18 miles to school every day and never once complained about it!"

That was why Wyatt had come to pick me up.

I realized I had lost my phone in the accident, which meant I couldn't even make the payment in the first place.

The nurse scoffed after noticing my silence. "You'd better go back and wait for your turn. Dr. Johnson already said that she'd treat you after seeing all the other patients, right? She had made it crystal clear. We follow protocol to the letter here, and no one gets special treatment!"

My legs were shaking so badly that my knees buckled and I fell forward, but someone grabbed me and held me up.

Maeve's eyes were bloodshot, her face brimming with concern. "I'll pay for the ambulance!"

The nurse across from us grew anxious. "Why are you sticking your neck out for her, Maeve? Do you want to end up washing bedsheets like Dr. Lister, too?"

Maeve pulled me tighter against her for support. "I got into medicine to save lives—not to stand around while someone's in pain!"

She supported me as we slowly made our way out, but Mom's voice suddenly came from behind us. "Where are you going, Gloria? Wanda has lost a lot of blood, so go donate some to her!"

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. "It's just a two-inch cut—"

Mom's tone left no room for argument. "Wanda is anemic, so every single drop of blood counts! You grew up with a doctor for a mother! You, of all people, should know that better than anyone, Gloria!"

I drew a ragged breath, my voice coming out raspy and completely unrecognizable. "D-Did you even read the medical report I left in the drawer of your desk, Mom?"

Everyone was dumbstruck, including me, who was hovering in midair.I wasn't oblivious to how much Wyatt favored Wanda. But I had just stubbornly convinced myself that it was nothing more than brotherly affection.Mom's face was flushed with anger, her outstretched finger trembling uncontrollably as she pointed at Wanda. "I treated you like my own daughter! I shared everything of Gloria's equally with you! I never mistreated you! If you had a problem with me, you should have come after me! Why did you have to go after Gloria?"Wanda's face twisted into a mask of unhinged fury. "You never mistreated me? You were giving me handouts! Why was I dumped at the public restroom the moment I was born, left to beg for scraps and get sneered at by everyone? "Gloria was dumped by her father too! Why did she get a loving mother and everything she ever wanted on a silver platter?"She pointed at my body lying motionless on the floor and continued, "Do you remember the first time we met? She swe

It turned out that among the patients waiting in the ER, there happened to be an informant for a local news reporter. He grew impatient after waiting outside for a long time, so he leaned close to the trauma room door, wanting to hear what was happening inside. He had expected to hear the calm, orderly sounds of a medical team at work, but all he heard was the heated arguments—catching fragmented words like "dead", "forged", and "get back at us". His instincts, honed by years on the beat, kicked in. He instantly suspected that the hospital was covering up a major medical malpractice case and tipped off his contact. In that instant, the reporters rushed over, arriving at the same time as the traffic police handling the accident follow-up.The traffic officer in charge looked around the trauma room before his gaze landed on my body. He furrowed his brows slightly and asked, "How did Gloria die from her injuries? Didn't the paramedic on the scene mark her as a critical patient? How

Just a few minutes later, the trauma room door was pushed open. Dr. Lister came in dressed as a janitor, holding a mop.Mom lunged at her as soon as she saw her, gripping her collar tightly. "What the hell happened to Gloria's medical exam results? Why did she have a coagulation disorder?"Dr. Lister glanced at my blood-soaked body, a flicker of shock and sympathy crossing her eyes. She then sneered at Mom and said, "Gloria's premarital checkup did show that she had contracted a rare blood-borne virus that triggered a coagulation disorder, Dr. Johnson. "It's not some incurable disease, though. If treated early, even a surgeon of your caliber would only need to prescribe a few medications to deal with it."She looked down at Mom condescendingly. "What's the matter, Dr. Johnson? You're not going to tell me that it's been this long and you still had no idea what was going on with your own daughter, right?"Mom trembled violently as she seemed to remember the countless times I had tr

Mom felt a terrifying coldness and rigidity beneath her fingertips. She turned completely pale, her pupils shrinking in terror. "P-Please don't scare me, Gloria…"She instinctively pushed me again, this time with more force. In the end, my rigid body, already lying on just half of the bed, was knocked over the edge and hit the floor with a dull thud, leaving me lying face-up. My face had already gone pale and bluish—with my eyes slightly open—carrying a look of confusion and pain, while the blood at the corners of my mouth had dried and darkened.A blood-curdling shriek pierced through the trauma room, and Mom's legs gave out before passing out on the spot. That commotion finally caught Wyatt's attention. He hurried over, but the moment he saw the face on the floor, he was dumbstruck. He collapsed to his knees with a thud and reached out two trembling fingers to feel for my carotid pulse. He froze in place as he felt the coldness and complete stillness beneath his fingertips, hi

Wyatt stood there, hesitating for a moment, then took a step toward me. He had barely taken a step when a panicked shout came from behind. "What's the matter, Wanda?"Wanda closed her eyes and went limp, collapsing onto the hospital bed.Wyatt instantly turned around and hurried back to Wanda, quickly pulling her into his arms.Wanda slowly fluttered her eyes open, clutching Wyatt's sleeve weakly as tears welled up. "Those surgical scissors and clamps are so terrifying, Wyatt… Please stay by my side…"She glanced over Wyatt's shoulder and called out to me. "I'm really frightened, Gloria. I'm only asking Wyatt to stay with me for a while, so please don't be mad at me…"Wyatt turned to look at me, following her gaze. He then said softly, "Wanda's treatment won't take long, Gloria. I'll come over as soon as I can, so just wait a little longer."I remained motionless in the corner while Wanda bit her lower lip, looking aggrieved as tears streamed down her face.Wyatt's eyes flashed

  • Left Bleeding While They Rushed to Save Her   Chapter 5

I no longer felt suffocated as the unbearable pain in my back faded away, leaving my body lighter than it had ever been. I floated aimlessly in midair, looking down to see a body identical to mine lying on the hospital bed in the corner. It lay motionless in the shadows with its head turned toward the wall, ghastly pale with deathly purple lips. There wasn't a trace of life left in it.I looked at my body in silence and let out a bitter laugh. It turned out that this was what it felt like to die.In the center of the brightly lit trauma room, Wanda leaned comfortably against Mom, her face rosy and her eyes sparkling. Mom gently raised Wanda's bandaged arm and stroked it. "It's going to be alright, Wanda. I was very careful during the suturing, so it'll heal up in no time!"Wyatt sorted through the medical instruments on the tray nearby, looking tenderly at Wanda now and then.It was a sight that suddenly overlapped with a memory from my past—except this time, the person being ca
