Chapter 3

Author: Eternity
The next morning, I placed my resignation letter on the executive partner’s desk.

He read it, signed the acknowledgment, and slid my copy back to me.

The moment his signature made my departure official, a strange emptiness opened inside my chest.

I had spent years building my career at Alder and Finch. I had once believed Adrian would be beside me when I finally left.

Now I was walking away alone.

I folded the letter and stepped into the hallway, only to find Adrian blocking my path.

His brows were drawn together.

“Evie, did you revoke my access to your building?”

“Yes.”

“I took Mia home last night and went back to check on you, but the concierge wouldn’t let me upstairs.” He spoke as if nothing had happened between us. “Tell the building manager to restore it. I need to be able to get in if you’re sick.”

“That won’t be necessary. I won’t be living there after I leave the firm.”

His gaze dropped to the folded paper in my hand. Understanding crossed his face.

“Your resignation letter.” He sounded as though he had nearly forgotten. “Don’t worry. I’ll submit mine this afternoon.”

I studied him.

He spoke so naturally that I might have believed him if I hadn’t heard everything the night before. He still thought I was going to Sterling. He still believed I would wait there until he finally decided to join me.

We walked down the hallway together.

Since Mia had arrived at Alder and Finch, even moments like this had become rare. Adrian was always teaching her, comforting her, or cleaning up another one of her mistakes.

For twenty years, walking beside him had felt as natural as breathing.

Knowing this might be the last time, I allowed myself one final moment of weakness.

“There’s no need for promises between us anymore.”

Adrian stopped.

For a long moment, he said nothing. Then his voice dropped.

“Evie, the truth is, I’ve always—”

“Adrian!”

Mia appeared behind him with a stack of folders in her arms.

She hurried toward us and complained with easy familiarity, “You promised you’d help me prepare for the client presentation. Why did you suddenly disappear?”

Then she handed him the folders.

“I saw that the coaching plan you made for me runs through the next two months, so I organized all the materials in advance.” She gave him a playful smile. “You’re not mad that I looked at your calendar, are you?”

Adrian’s expression stiffened.

He glanced at me guiltily.

Two months.

He had just promised to resign that afternoon, yet he had already planned the next two months of his life with Mia at Alder and Finch.

He had pushed me out while quietly building a future that had never included me.

When I showed no reaction, something almost like disappointment flickered across his face.

I pressed my nails into my palm and forced the bitterness back down.

“You two should talk. I’m leaving.”

Mia turned toward me as if she had only just noticed I was there. Her body jerked in exaggerated surprise.

“E-Evelyn…”

She moved closer to Adrian.

“Are you upset because Adrian has been spending so much time helping me?”

Her eyes immediately filled with tears.

“I know I’m slower than you. I didn’t grow up with your money or your connections, so I have to work harder just to keep up. Adrian is only helping because I don’t have anyone else.”

I had said nothing about her background.

I hadn’t even asked why they were together.

Still, she had already turned my silence into jealousy and herself into its innocent victim.

I didn’t have the patience to perform in this scene with her again.

“You’re blocking the hallway. Move.”

Mia’s lips trembled.

She took one step backward and let the folders fall from her arms. Papers scattered across the floor as tears spilled down her cheeks.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you angry.”

Whatever guilt Adrian had felt disappeared at once.

He grabbed my wrist.

“What the hell is wrong with you, Evelyn?”

His fingers tightened painfully as he dragged me back toward Mia.

“Apologize to her.”

I stared at the hand around my wrist.

For years, I had defended him, protected his pride, and sacrificed opportunities to remain beside him. Yet now he was hurting me because Mia had cried over an insult I had never made.

Something inside me shattered.

Not my heart.

The last piece of tenderness I had left for him.

I tore my wrist free and slapped him across the face.

The sharp sound silenced the entire hallway.

Adrian stood frozen, one side of his face turning red. Mia stopped crying long enough to stare at me.

I looked directly into the eyes of the man I had loved for twenty years.

“The person who owes an apology is you, Adrian.”

My voice did not shake.

“And you don’t owe it to Mia.”

“You owe it to me.”

  • Left Him, Outgrew Him   Chapter 10

Three years later, Julian and I were married at an old estate on the Scottish coast.White roses and ivy climbed the stone walls, and the sea wind carried our guests' laughter toward the cliffs. There was no livestream, no press line, and no business favor disguised as a wedding gift. We had invited only the people who were genuinely happy to see us choose each other.During the ceremony, Julian didn't promise to protect me from every storm. He knew better than to cast me as someone waiting to be rescued."I promise to tell you the truth even when you can use it to beat me," he said, and a ripple of laughter moved through the guests. His thumb brushed my knuckles. "I promise never to confuse being needed with being loved. And whenever you choose a new road, I promise to ask whether I can walk it with you."My voice held when I answered. "You can."Before the reception ended, a wooden box with no sender's name was delivered to me. An obsolete Cross family crest was stamped inside the li

We finished giving statements just before midnight. Julian came home with me, and the next morning I woke to the scent of toast and rosemary. He stood at my stove in a white shirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows, making eggs as if he had always belonged in my kitchen.I leaned against the doorway. "Does the CEO of Vale Capital usually include breakfast in his investment services?""Only for one client." He slid a plate toward me, then added gravely, "I don't have a binding contract yet. I need to make a strong impression."I was about to laugh when alerts began stacking across my phone.[Bennett Heiress Returns Home with Partner CEO After Midnight][Billion-Dollar Fund Seat Secured Through Bedroom Deal]Both headlines were climbing the finance gossip rankings. One photograph had been taken outside my building the previous night; the other showed Julian and me on a London street six months earlier. The next time I saw Adrian was at the New York Financial Association's annual gala. That evening, I announced Bennett Global's new green infrastructure fund. Julian had flown in from London and sat in the front row as our lead co-investor. He didn't clap first or loudest. He simply watched me with the quiet satisfaction of a man who knew exactly how hard I had worked to stand on that stage. When I stepped down, he met me beside the curtain with a glass of water. "You moved the pension board with the risk section.""Most people would've complimented the dress first."His eyes traveled over me, slow enough to make my skin warm. "I was saving that observation for somewhere without three hundred witnesses.""Smart man.""I have occasional flashes."Near the end of the gala, I went to the powder room. Mia followed me in.She no longer played the timid newcomer. The designer gown, oversized diamonds, and aggressively perfect makeup made her look like someone trying to prove she belonged to a

My office at Bennett Global's New York headquarters was on the forty-seventh floor.Within a month, I had rebuilt the team and won two anchor clients away from Cross Group. I wasn't hunting Adrian. His company was simply weak, and clients didn't owe loyalty to a sinking name. The second client made us compete in the same room. Adrian arrived with a glossy deck full of legacy photographs and handshakes. I brought a ninety-day transition plan, named the three risks Cross had ignored, and put the people who would actually run the account at the table.During questions, Adrian leaned back and gave me the familiar half smile that used to signal a private joke. "Evelyn has always liked worst-case scenarios.""Only when they're supported by the data," I replied. "Would you like me to show the committee the figures your team left out?"The smile vanished. We signed the client forty-eight hours later.[Maybe this is what he meant when he told me to prove how far I could go.]The answer, apparen

I didn't give Julian an answer that night, and he didn't press.Over the next six months, I passed the London board's probationary review and led three cross-border acquisitions. Julian sometimes asked me to dinner, but more often we met across a conference table as opposing parties on a deal.He tore apart my valuation model when he thought it was wrong. When I proved it wasn't, he said in front of both teams, "Evelyn's right. We use her numbers."Adrian had treated my competence like a threat. Julian treated it like the first worthy match he had found in years. The man even looked pleased when I beat him.Once, after I cut Vale Capital's proposed management fee by twelve percent, he found me at the coffee station and said, "You enjoy robbing me in public.""You came into my meeting with weak numbers. That's practically consent."His laugh followed me all the way back to the boardroom. There was heat between us, but never a price attached to it. I didn't have to shrink to protect his

Before I could answer, Julian opened the rear door of a waiting car. "Headquarters first, or the apartment in Belgravia?"The line went silent. Then Adrian's voice shot up. "Julian? You're with him?""You ran to my brother to get back at me?"Julian lifted one eyebrow but didn't interfere. He simply held the door and left the choice to me.I slid into the car and watched rain thread down the window. "I accepted a new job. It has nothing to do with you.""How can it have nothing to do with me? You promised we'd go to Sterling together. Evie, you can't throw everything away because of Mia.""Can't do what? Change my mind after finding out you lied to me?"His breath caught. "You know?"That was all the confirmation I needed."Don't contact me again. Whatever we were personally and professionally ends here."I hung up and blocked that number too.Julian handed me a clean handkerchief. "I had a welcome speech prepared, but congratulations might be more appropriate.""For what?""Cutting yo
