Left for a Stuffed Animal

The Consigliere—my husband, Sal Barzini—who'd always despised anything soft or weak—suddenly started sleeping with a teddy bear. One button eye missing, filthy as a stray dog, yet he cuddled that beast every night, curled up in silk sheets like a baby returning to the womb. And left me freezing on the edge of the master bedroom.I couldn't stand it anymore. At our son Luca's first-year baptism, I announced I wanted out.Everyone went numb with shock.Sal grabbed a glass of red wine and threw it in my face. "You're jealous of a stuffed animal? Have you lost your fucking mind?"I wiped the wine from my cheek, cold as ice. "You say you want to spend your life with that beast. I'm giving you my blessing."..."Cara Lucchese!" He used my full name—that's always a bad sign. "Luca just turned one, and you pick this holy day to humiliate me with such insane nonsense? You're completely unhinged."I stared him down. "Sign it. Tomorrow, nine sharp, Family Council Room."I had nothing more to say.

I planned to crash at a safe house, but my access to the Family accounts had been cut off.Only then did I realize that over the past year, the financial keys had quietly slipped back to the Barzinis. Even the numbered account I'd held for twenty years—the one my parents left me—had been transferred into Sal’s name.I looked like I lived in a warm, loving home. In truth, I was completely alone.I spent one night at Marco's apartment. The next morning, I went to the Family headquarters to collect my things. The moment I stepped into the lobby, the soldiers started their whispers."Gold-digging bitch. Living in paradise and she wants out? Dumber than a pig.""The Consigliere just likes sleeping with a stuffed toy. So what? I like teddy bears too!""Probably tired of him gaining weight, eyeing fresh meat. Bet she's got seven or eight lovers on the side."They looked at me like I was a convicted killer on death row—judgmental, disgusted, waiting for me to hang.I didn't get a chance to ans

Every eye in the Chamber locked onto me, waiting to see what blade I'd pull."I request to present the surveillance footage," Marco said, sliding the encrypted drive across the mahogany table to the Don.The Don nodded, his ring tapping the wood once.A soldier plugged the drive into the monitor. The projection screen flickered to life, showing three folders."Open the first one," I said, my voice steady as a gun barrel. The soldier clicked it. Video filled the screen. There was Sal—my husband, the Consigliere—bursting from the bathroom, naked, lunging straight for that filthy teddy bear. He tackled it onto the silk sheets, hands groping, face twisted in a bliss that made my stomach turn. The Chamber erupted."What the hell… the Consigliere, secretly doing that with a stuffed animal?""Sick. Disgusting. He has a wife right there!""Humiliating her like this… what kind of man…"Whispers hissed through the shadows like snakes. Sal's face shot crimson. He clearly remembered telling me the

The woman inside the teddy bear costume turned around, and her face was identical to Gigi's."MaGigi mia… the thief crying thief.""They're adulterers. Conning the whole Family.""Fucking hell, we almost bought it.""Hiding inside a teddy bear to fuck? That's not human. That's gutter trash."The Chamber erupted in curses and shouts. Even the Don's jaw tightened, his eyes narrowing with cold disgust.Sal and Gigi looked at each other. Sweat beaded on their foreheads, their knees trembling, nearly buckling.Slap!Father Barzini's hand flew so hard Sal's head snapped sideways. The old man was shaking, voice cracking with rage: "You… you've pissed on our name! Disgraced the blood! Is this what I taught you?""You played the good son, the honest advisor—how did you become this? Cheating, whoring, betraying your wife? What do you owe Cara? What do you owe us?"Mother Barzini broke down sobbing, her face crumpled with a devastation I'd never seen. They had raised a monster dressed in silk.Th

"Don't pronounce the judgment…"Sal scrambled to me, dropping to his knees on the cold marble, clutching at my skirt. "Cara, I'm sorry. I know I was wrong.""I'll change. I swear I'll be faithful. I'll be a good husband.""We have a child! She's only one—she needs a mother!""Whatever I did, the baby is innocent."At the mention of the child, the Chamber softened. Pity flickered in the eyes of the made men. Murmurs rose—give her the child, let her raise it.I drew a breath, feeling my eyes burn. "Sal, you still don't understand.""The child is innocent, yes.""But she is not mine."The Chamber went deathly still.Marco stepped forward and laid a bloodline test on the Don's table. "DNA confirmation. The Consigliere's daughter shares no blood with Cara Lucchese."Father Barzini choked, a wheezing gasp, hand clutching his chest. The old man looked ready to collapse. The room turned to Sal with pure, burning hate. He had lied about everything.Tears finally spilled down my face. I spoke th
