Chapter 3

Author: Clara
I clenched my fists and crumpled the banishment order into a ball.

"Marco," I said. "You better think this through. You can't hold the succession ceremony without the nod from the person backing me."

The hall went silent for a second, then erupted into even louder laughter.

Marco laughed so hard he couldn't stand up straight.

"Do you think just because you slept in Corleone's bed, you wield Corleone's power?"

Marco walked up to me and patted my cheek.

"Wake up. I investigated your background a long time ago. You're just an orphan from the slums. If I hadn't picked you off the streets back then, you'd be dead in a gutter somewhere. And you dare threaten me?"

To protect me, my brother had fabricated my identity, so clearly, Marco didn't have the clearance to access my real file.

I turned to leave. Just as I reached the edge of the stairs, Sophia suddenly blocked my path.

She had her back to Marco, revealing a vicious smile only to me, and whispered:

"Trying to leave? It won't be that easy."

The next second, Sophia suddenly screamed, threw herself backward, and rolled down the stairs.

"Ah! My stomach... Marco, help! Our baby!"

Sophia clutched her flat stomach, rolling on the ground.

Marco rushed over to scoop Sophia up, then turned back to glare at me ferociously.

"Elena! You poisonous viper! You dared to push her? She's carrying my child, how could you be so evil!"

"I didn't push her. She threw herself down."

"Shut up!" Marco roared. “Guards, hold this bitch down!"

Two bodyguards rushed forward and forced me to my knees.

The floor was covered in shards from the broken wine glass. My knees hit the glass, and blood immediately seeped out.

Marco pointed at Sophia on the floor.

"Crawl over there and apologize to Sophia! Beg for her forgiveness! Or I'll cripple those hands of yours!"

The bodyguards pushed my head down, trying to force me to kowtow.

I braced myself against the floor, keeping my head up to stare at Marco.

"Marco, you weren't like this before. You said you would protect me forever."

"Letting you stay by my side for these five years was already a charity. Not only are you ungrateful, but you also tried to harm my fiancée and child?"

"Fine," I said. "Marco, remember what you said today."

"From this moment on, we are dead to each other."

"Dead to each other? You think you can escape me?"

He issued a command.

"Send in the Enforcers. We have a traitor here. Take her to the water dungeon and teach her a lesson."

Seven or eight heavily armed men in black rushed in, their guns aimed at me.

That was Marco's most trusted private militia—and I was the one who had trained them.

"Former Consigliere Elena has betrayed the family. Freeze all her assets. Anyone who dares to save her makes an enemy of Marco Leon."

Marco crouched down and gripped my chin.

"There are people outside lining up to kill you for the bounty."

"I'm going to lock you in the water dungeon. When you learn to be obedient like a dog, I might consider letting you out."

"Take her away!"

I was dragged toward the basement by two large men.

The moment the iron door slammed shut, I saw Marco pick Sophia up gently.

"Don't be scared, baby. I've already taken care of that bitch."

Sophia wrapped her arms around his neck and looked back at me with a victorious smirk.

Marco knelt on the cold floor, a guttural choking sound coming from his throat."Elena... please..." Marco had completely broken down. He tried to crawl toward me, but Leonardo's bodyguard kicked him square in the chest.I stood up from the chair and walked to the edge of the conveyor belt, looking down at Sophia's face, which was twisted with fear."Sophia, don't you love telling the story about that fire five years ago?" I stared at the cross necklace around her neck—the one that originally belonged to me.Marco looked up, a trace of confusion in his eyes."Marco, do you really think a woman who needs help lifting a suitcase could carry a grown man out of a burning building?" I sneered and pulled an old medical record from my jacket, throwing it in Marco's face.It was the burn treatment record from the clinic where I went after saving Marco five years ago."Five years ago, I moved the burning beam off you with my bare hands. I still have the scar on my palm." I held out my hand; the

Inside the office, I was toying with a gold lighter.Bang. The door was kicked open.Marco rushed in, pressing his gun against the back of my head. Sophia limped in behind him, gripping a crucifix dagger, her face twisted."Freeze! Elena, if you make a sound, I'll blow your brains out!" Marco roared, his eyes filled with a manic thrill.I turned around slowly, my expression completely indifferent. There wasn't a trace of panic."Marco, you're three minutes late." I casually unzipped the bag on the table. It wasn't filled with gold bars. Instead, it contained several lead weights topped with a printed screenshot from a surveillance camera—showing Marco and Sophia fighting over cash in that rundown shack.Marco froze, his expression stiffening. "What... what is this?""It means your little scheme isn't worth shit." I leaned back in my chair, looking at him. "That bottle Abu was drinking? Leonardo prepared it specifically so he would 'slip up' and feed you the info.""No! That's impossibl

Abu and Old K walked out, acting completely wasted, and conveniently "forgot" to close the door tight.Marco scrambled up, his eyes gleaming with a sickly light, and grabbed Sophia. "Did you hear that? We're going to turn this around. Elena is at that slaughterhouse tonight. If we grab her, we'll have the money to run!"Sophia didn't care about the pain in her face or her injured leg anymore; her eyes lit up. "What are we waiting for? Let's go!"Meanwhile, inside Leonardo's private villa, the fire in the fireplace was burning bright.Leonardo elegantly swirled a glass of aged whiskey."Men like him always think they can outsmart everyone." Leonardo watched Marco's desperate, manic face on the surveillance screen, then turned to look at me, his voice deep and magnetic. "Elena, Marco prides himself on his tactics. So, at that slaughterhouse, I will make him watch his own strategy turn into his suicide note."I stared at the red liquid in the glass, feeling nothing but indifference. "Do w

Marco shook off the debt collectors and ducked into a dilapidated shack deep in the slums. He had secretly bought this place when he first started making a name for himself. Back then, he wasn't a Don yet, and I hadn't helped him build his empire. He always felt he needed an exit strategy. He never expected this place to actually become his final rat hole.He pushed the door open. Sophia was crouching in the corner, frantically prying up floor tiles with a rusty kitchen knife. Stacks of cash lay scattered at her feet, money she hadn't managed to stuff into her bag yet. That was the last of the survival money Marco had hidden here."You're stealing my money to run?" Marco's voice was hoarse.Sophia flinched. Seeing she was busted, she simply shoved the cash in her hands into her shirt and screamed at him."Marco! You're a stray dog wanted by the whole city! The sharks are just going to take this money anyway. I might as well take it and start fresh somewhere else. I'm not letting the Ro

One week later. The biggest annual "Dark Night Auction" of Sicily was held on the high seas. This was a place to fence stolen goods and a stage for the families to display their power.I attended as the representative of the Corleone family. To my surprise, I saw Marco there.I heard he had sold the last set of jewelry left by his late mother and taken out loans from sharks to scrape together some cash.He was wearing a rented tuxedo, his face sallow and eyes sunken, looking like a ghost. But his eyes were bright, staring dead at the auction stage.Because tonight's grand finale lot was a blue diamond necklace named "Tears of the Deep."Five years ago, I saw this necklace in a magazine and casually mentioned, "It's beautiful."I didn't expect him to remember. It seemed he wanted to go all in, winning this necklace to beg for my forgiveness. The auction began.I wasn't interested in the early lots. Until the "Tears of the Deep" was brought out.Starting price: five million dollars."Fiv

Three days after leaving the estate.Marco still hadn't given up.A man like him always has this delusional confidence. He thought I was just acting out in a fit of rage, that if he just lowered his head, I’d go soft because of our five-year history. That night, I was inspecting the "Royal Casino," a property under the family name.As soon as I reached the entrance, I saw Marco blocking the door. He was wearing that suit, now wrinkled, and holding a huge bouquet of roses.Sophia wasn't with him; she was probably off hiding from the loan sharks. When he saw me come out, Marco’s eyes lit up. He rushed over, trying to grab my hand."Elena! Baby! I knew I’d find you here!"The bodyguards immediately stepped in, stopping him six feet away.Marco didn't get angry. He shouted over the bodyguards:"Honey, stop this. I know I was wrong that day. I shouldn't have kicked you out just to save face. But I was tricked by that bitch Sophia!""I've already dumped that woman! Right now, my heart only b
