Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: yb
There was a pregnant silence on the phone this time.

A long while later, Luca said, "Are you serious right now, Elena?"

"Yes."

"Just because I saved Carmela first the other day?"

I didn't respond.

However, my silence seemed to ignite his fury as he roared, "How many times do I have to explain things to you? She is just the core of the intelligence team! The entire operation would be paralyzed if anything happened to her, so her situation was far more urgent than yours!

"Besides, you're my fiancee! I couldn't prioritize saving you first before anyone else. What would the others think of me if they found out? How did you think I was supposed to maintain my authority next time?"

"Then, what do you take me for?" I retorted.

"What?"

"You'd rather have everyone think you were a selfless hero than care about me dying in the alley."

I sighed and continued, "Luca, who am I in your heart? Am I just a burden you can sacrifice and replace at any time for the greater good? Or, am I your partner whom you're prepared to spend the rest of your life with and fight side by side?"

He didn't say a word after that.

"Your silence is the answer, isn't it?" I asked with a soft chuckle. "Go ahead and deal with your important matters. You don't have to come looking for me anymore."

Just before the call was disconnected, I clearly heard Carmela's gentle, comforting voice on the other end, saying, "Don't worry, Luca. Elena's just being impulsive. She's always been the most understanding, and she also loves you the most, doesn't she?

"How could she ever bear to truly leave you? She'll be back in a few days after she's thought things through."

I hung up on the call first.

The word "understanding" had been repeated to me millions of times over the past decade or so. It was such a simple word, and yet, it felt like a chain wrapping itself tightly around me until I couldn't breathe.

It didn't allow me to show any emotions like anger, fear, or resentment. Instead, I was forced to be perfect and always show my perpetually smiling and positive side, never causing any trouble for anyone.

However, I was done being "understanding" from today onward.

I felt for a black satellite phone in the compartment of my suitcase and turned it on. Then, I sent out a text message to one of the saved numbers in it.

"Help me look something up, Bianca. My SOS coordinates were tampered with on the night the Famiglia was attacked. Find out who did it."

Bianca Gatti replied almost instantly.

"I'm on it."

I then set the phone back down, got up, and began cleaning the dusty old house.

Seasons passed, and a year soon went by in the blink of an eye.I was hunched over the counter in the middle of checking the accounts for the last quarter when the brass wind chimes hanging above the door suddenly rang out crisply."Welcome," I said instinctively, looking up to greet the customer. However, my smile froze on my face when I saw who it really was.Luca was standing at the door, looking so thin and emaciated that I could barely recognize him. His cheeks were sunken, and there were huge dark circles under his eyes.He wore a faded old jacket, his once-arrogant air all gone as it was now replaced with a disheveled and weary appearance. He gulped when he met my eyes. After what felt like an eternity, he finally called my name, "Elena."I slowly set down my pen and looked at him calmly."How did you find me?""I heard it from Bianca.""Bianca? Really?""No. She never said a word to me," he said. However, the corners of his lips curled upward into a self-deprecating g

The next afternoon, I met Rosa in a quiet cafe near my parents' old house. She wore an elegant coat with her hair meticulously combed to the back, but her face was now filled with sadness that she couldn't hide. When she saw me entering the cafe, she stood up awkwardly and said, "You've lost weight, Elena."I sat down across from her."Is there a reason you asked to see me, Donna Gambino?"She was silent for a long while. Then, she shakily retrieved a bank card from her bag and handed it to me."This is the card that you left behind. We never touched a single cent in it."I didn't take the card from her. However, she then produced an exquisite jewelry box with a pair of gorgeous emerald earrings nestled inside on a satin cushion. I recognized the earrings at once. The earrings were the only thing that Mom had left for me. Rosa had taken them away for safekeeping after Mom was buried, and I never knew where they went after that."I should have returned them to you a long time a

I saw Luca at the entrance after the trial. He was leaning against a cold stone pillar while staring blankly at the gloomy sky above him.He turned around belatedly after hearing the crisp sound of my heels against the stone floor."Elena." His eyes were bloodshot. "Carmela's been sent to Nero Prison. The Famiglia has stripped her of all privileges. She's permanently exiled.""I know.""You won.""This was never a case of winning or losing," I said, looking at him silently. "I never wanted to fight anyone for anything, Luca. All I wanted was to survive."His lips trembled slightly. Finally, he said hoarsely, "I'm sorry."I shook my head self-deprecatingly."You can save those words for your own repentance," I said, circling around him and walking toward a black sedan parked next to the road."Elena!" he called out brokenly again behind me. "Can we… Can we ever get back together again?"I recalled the dark, dingy alley, the coldness in my body as blood poured from my wound, an

Three days passed in the blink of an eye. The Famiglia court soon held its first public trial.Carmela stood in the dock, staring out blankly, dressed in a plain and loose-fitting shirt. Her once elegant long hair was pulled back in a ponytail, and she looked utterly dejected and miserable. The defense lawyer beside her was an elderly man. His expression was extremely solemn.Meanwhile, Luca sat in the first row of the audience, his face grim, with Rosa seated next to him. When Rosa, who usually acted haughty with me, saw me enter the court, her lips trembled slightly, but she never uttered a word. The judge's gavel slammed on the wooden table, and the presiding judge solemnly announced the start of the trial.Antonio rose to his feet and began methodically recounting the entire sequence of events—from the moment I sent out my SOS coordinates on the night of the attack, to Carmela's abuse of her administrative account to tamper with the data, to the operations team wasting four pr

Early the next morning, Bianca suddenly barged into my house. She was wearing a sharp black leather jacket. The moment she stepped in through the door, she asked eagerly, "So, what do you think about Antonio? He's very reliable, right? Don't you think he's handsome too?"I looked at her somewhat helplessly and said, "You came over so early in the morning just for gossip?""I'm here to check on you," Bianca said, sitting down casually and making herself at home. "After all, Antonio was the most brilliant genius back in law school. He went straight to the Supreme Court right after graduation and became a senior partner in less than three years!"You're guaranteed to win this time for sure with him on your side!"I poured her a glass of orange juice and asked, "Why do you speak so highly of him?""He and I worked on three major and difficult cases in the past, and we won all of them," she said, taking the juice and sipping on it. She then continued, "Also, there's something weird ab

A deathly silence fell over the house.Ultimately, Luca turned and left without another word. The heavy sound of his leather shoes faded into the dark until it was completely gone.I leaned against the door, feeling utterly exhausted as the wound in my abdomen throbbed painfully."Come in and have a seat, Signore Zani," I said, mustering a smile at Antonio. He nodded and followed me in.I poured him a glass of water and sat down on the old couch opposite him."Bianca has already filled me in on most of the situation," Antonio said, pulling out a thick sheaf of papers from his bag. "I have solidified all the technical evidence regarding the malicious tampering of the location signal."That also includes the Gambino Famiglia system's internal logs, the IP addresses used to send the modified commands, and the timeline comparisons. The chain of evidence is complete."Carmela might have been a professional at covering her tracks, but she can't hide every single trace."Antonio flipp
