14) A father's daughter will lead the pack
As Mj yawned and stretched, she followed Jay and Moxie toward the training yard and noticed that even though Jay seemed to be his normal mostly silent self Moxie seemed to be following suit, so she jolted forward and jammed her shoulder into Moxie’s from behind but instead of the normal playful tussle this time Moxie simply stumbled forward before stuffing his hands in his pockets and trudging forward. Mj looked toward Jay, and he shrugged, “Mox isn’t real crazy about visiting his family, they don’t… accept him the way we do.” Mj creased her brow and wrinkled her nose, “meaning what? They don’t think he should be a hunter?”

As the sun began to descend behind the horizon Ed cranked the SUV into a modest gas station, and as he saddled up next to a fueling pump, the other hunters poured out of the large vehicle, each groaning and stretching their limbs, “I’m gonna run in and grab road snacks use the bathroom” Mj announced as she began to walk away and Ed nodded as he started gassing up the SUV, “grab beef jerky” Moxie yelled as Mj opened the door to the small corner store attached to the fueling station. Mj did not turn around, she just waved her hand backwards toward the sound of Moxie’s voice before throwing open the door and entering the cramped corner store. Ed watched Mj disappear behind the dark tint of the glass door before addressing his brothers, “she makes a great hunter and a better assassin but… she needs something else too,” the sadness in Ed’s voice tugged at Jay’s heart and the younger wolf squeezed his older bro

Mj was hoping Ed would not want to talk but as she watched Jay curl up next to Moxie and close his eyes the older hunter sighed and began to twist the hair in his bushy salt and pepper beard, “ so… you threw your shoes out the window, and I would really like to know why,” Mj crossed her arms and leaned her back against the window, so she could stare at the older hunter, “ you really wanna know Ed, or is this just polite conversation?” Mj was a little surprised by how distant her tone sounded, she hadn't meant for her voice to sound as bitter as it did and as she opened her mouth to apologize Ed shocked her when he simply laughed, “You know, Dante said almost the exact same thing to me on his first stake out as a hunter.” Mj’s attention immediately zeroed in on Ed, and she wasn't entirely sure if she wanted him to continue his story or if she needed to kick him in the face.

The featherlight touch of fur on her cheek had Mj forcing her eyelids open and as her vision cleared, a large red werewolf stood before her. Mj gasped and struggled to skirt away, but found herself stuck deep in fine yellow dirt. Mj opened her mouth to scream for help, but no sound came out, indeed though she could feel the force of her own voice strain hard against her chest. The colossal, regal looking creature cocked its head and the almost haunting gold eyes bore straight into Mj and the woman still struggling in the almost unearthly yellow sand sucked in a breath as the realization of who was standing before her caused her entire body to freeze in shock. Mj’s muffled whimpers and grunts woke Moxie almost instantly, and he began to shake Jay, “ wake our little sister mon amour… the shadows are creeping in her mind,” Jay rubbed his eyes and shook his head before the sound of his sisters muffled cries forced his eyes open wide. Jay leaned forward and started to shake her gently, “ Em, Mj, Mj… wake up little sister,” he whispered, trying not to wake Ed, who had pulled over at some point to sleep on the wheel instead of behind it.
