Chapter 2 Being Caught

Autor: Silver
"Elly treats you well. She gave the candy to relieve your motion sickness, yet you didn't eat it. Are you saying that you don't like it?"

Everyone turned to look.

"Forget it," Elisa answered while waving her hand, her voice still soft and gentle. Her eyes even seemed a little red. "Maybe Anna isn't in the mood for something sweet. Drop the matter—I didn't think it through."

To everyone else, she looked like a kind soul who was still defending me even though she was hurt.

A few classmates were already shooting me displeased looks, as though I'd committed some unforgivable crime.

I watched her hold back her tears, letting them shimmer in her eyes without actually falling.

My anger slowly burned, but I forced it down. "Who said I don't like it?"

With that, I picked up the candy.

"Then, why didn't you eat it?" Freya kept harping on the matter. "Elisa gave it to you hours ago in the afternoon. Yet, you're still having it?"

"I never said I'd never eat it," I explained slowly. "I was feeling nauseous from the bus ride earlier, that's why."

She pressed me on this. "Then, why are you still not eating it? How long has it been? It's obvious you just don't like Elly."

Elisa sniffed softly, her voice barely above a whisper. "Anna, don't force yourself if you don't want to eat it. I'll just bring you a different flavored candy next time. It's okay."

I held the candy up and turned it over in my fingers, inspecting it for a moment. Then, in front of everyone, I peeled off the wrapper and popped it into my mouth.

The moment she saw me eat it, the corners of her lips lifted ever so slightly. "I knew it. Anna could never hate me."

When they saw me eat the candy, everyone around us relaxed.

Someone clapped and said, "See? She ate it!"

Someone else laughed at Freya for making such a big deal out of nothing. Others started shouting about playing spin the bottle.

Elisa smiled at me—sweet and gentle, just like those times when she'd told me how much she liked me.

I returned the smile, quietly watching her sugary facade and the gleam of greed in her eyes. Then, finding the entire thing almost laughable, I smiled at her again.

'Continue smiling. Let's see if you're still smiling tomorrow."

Early the next morning, I finished washing up and headed downstairs. Quite a few people were already gathered in the courtyard.

Everyone had their backpacks and sun hats, standing around in little groups. Some were putting on sunscreen, while others were discussing the route for our rafting trip that day.

Elisa stood in the middle of the crowd and waved at me. "Come, Anna! We're leaving soon!"

I walked over, nodded at her, and said nothing else.

Once almost everyone had arrived, the owner stood at the entrance calling for us to get ready to board the bus.

We all headed outside with our backpacks, chatting and laughing.

Just then, someone in the crowd suddenly commented, "What's this?"

A guy was holding his phone, repeatedly checking the screen. A few seconds later, he looked up, his voice filled with confusion. "Wait, I think I'm missing more than two thousand dollars from my account."

"What?" A girl next to him leaned over to look at his phone. "Are you sure you didn't remember the balance wrong?"

"No way. My mom just transferred that money to me for our graduation trip. I checked it yesterday, and now it's gone." He swiped through his phone several times, his brow furrowing deeper. "And there's not even a transaction record. The money just disappeared."

The courtyard fell strangely quiet for a moment.

Then, another classmate suddenly shouted while staring at her phone. "Why am I missing almost a thousand dollars too?!"

"That makes the three of us!"

"I lost over eight hundred…"

"I lost several thousand!"

Within seconds, the courtyard erupted into chaos.

I looked toward Elisa, who was standing on the steps. She'd been smiling at her phone just moments ago, but she looked pale now.

The other students hurriedly pulled out their phones, too, and soon, the courtyard was filled with screams and confused voices.

She stared at me in disbelief.

I met her vicious gaze and slowly smiled.

Just as someone shouted that we should call the police, the sirens in the distance grew louder by the second.

Several police officers walked into the courtyard. After looking around, one of them spoke.

"Who is Elisa Winters? We received a report from the bank that an account has shown suspicious activity and is suspected of being involved in illegal money laundering."

I froze for a second, then smiled. "Yeah. I guess I am.""Are you a freshman, though?" She closed her book and looked at me with interest. "I can tell you're a freshman. You have this look in your eyes, which seniors don't have."I laughed at that."Maybe I am," I replied before turning back to the window. At the edge of the plains, I could just make out the faint outline of mountains, a pale blue arc stretching across the horizon. Beyond them was Oxvale.I suddenly remembered something Grandpa had told me when I was little. When he was young, he'd taken a train to Oxvale on a business trip. It had rattled and rocked for more than a dozen hours, and by the time he got off, his legs were so swollen they could barely fit into his pants. He said the view outside the window had been completely different back then. There had been farmland and low houses all along the railway, nothing as neat and developed as it was now.He must have been about my age then, traveling alone with a

I locked my phone and slipped it back into my pocket. The city had completely disappeared from view. Outside the window, there was nothing but rolling green mountains and the occasional village flashing past.Sunlight spread across the sky in a dazzling golden haze. The clouds were thin, and wherever the light broke through, it was almost painfully bright.I leaned back in my seat, wondering what Grandpa was doing now.He was probably already down at the end of the alley, sitting beneath the old locust tree and playing chess with the neighbors. He'd have that well-worn set of chess pieces in his hand, and he'd probably be saying, as always, that he wouldn't go home until he won.My phone buzzed.I pulled it out and saw a voice message from Grandpa. He must have just figured out how to send voice messages.I tapped it open, and his rough, weathered voice came through the speaker. In the background, I could hear the crisp clack of chess pieces hitting the board. "Anna, you're on

I wiped my tears away quickly, thanking the doctor several times, my words coming out in a jumbled rush.He smiled and told me to take care of the paperwork for Grandpa's post-op recovery. Then, he walked away. When Grandpa was wheeled out, he was still asleep under the anesthesia. His face was pale, but his breathing was steady, his chest rising and falling gently.I followed beside his bed to the hospital room and watched the nurse transfer him onto the bed, hook up his IV, and adjust the monitors.I sat down beside him and watched his sleeping face.…In my previous life, he'd died while I was out delivering food. My phone had rung seventeen times, but I hadn't answered a single call.By the time I rushed back to the hospital, he was already gone. The nurse told me that in his final moments, he'd kept murmuring, "Anna."…In this life, he was lying right here, his chest rising and falling. The numbers on the monitor continued to tick steadily, indicating that his blood pr

"I'm not worried." Grandpa placed the neatly folded clothes beside his pillow and patted the edge of the bed, motioning for me to sit closer. "Come, Anna. I want to tell you a few things."I moved a little closer. He looked at me, and there was a light in his cloudy eyes that I hadn't seen in a long time.He reached out and took my hand. His palm was dry and rough, like a piece of tree bark left out in the sun for years. "Your parents left us when you were little. I raised you all these years, hoping I could stay by your side for as long as I could."His voice was slow, each word carefully measured."When I said that I didn't want treatment anymore, it wasn't because I was afraid of the cost. I was afraid you'd wear yourself out. You've always been stubborn, even as a little girl. You swallow every hardship and keep it all to yourself, just like your mother."My nose stung, and I started to say something, but he waved a hand, stopping me. "Now that we have enough money and you ca

After saying that, she paused before adding, "I didn't spend your money. Not because I didn't want to. It's because of the system."After it was transferred out, I don't know why, but that money stayed locked inside the system. I couldn't touch it."Maybe the amount was too large for it to process all at once or something. "I don't know. It just remained there."The police found it as soon as they investigated, so they returned the entire amount."I opened my mouth, wanting to say something, but my throat felt painfully tight. In my previous life, after that money was transferred away, I thought I'd lost it forever.I thought Elisa had spent every penny. Buying bags, buying clothes, eating and drinking—all of it had been turned into those polished, picture-perfect moments on her social media. The truth was, she hadn't spent it. The amount had remained trapped inside the system all along, like a piece of candy lodged in my throat, for three whole years. It wasn't until the pol

  • Let Her Ruin Herself   Chapter 7 The 100,000 Dollars

In the third week after we returned to school, Elisa asked to meet with me.We met at a gazebo behind the classroom building. When I arrived, she was already sitting there. A thick stack of A4 papers was spread across the table in front of her, every page covered in dense writing. She was wearing a faded T-shirt that had clearly been washed many times. Her hair was pulled into a simple low ponytail, and she wasn't wearing any makeup. She looked nothing like the glamorous class beauty she'd once been. Her fingertips pressed against the papers, her knuckles turning slightly white from the pressure.I sat down across from her.Without looking up, she pushed the stack toward me and spoke softly. "I finished it."I took the papers and started flipping through them.At the top of the first page, written in slightly crooked handwriting, were the words, "Complete Transfer Records and Repayment Plan".The handwriting wasn't particularly neat, and there were corrections scattered acro
