Jax’s POV
Riley’s palms slowly dropped from my cheeks. “You don’t have to do this, you don’t have to play the game,” she whispered. “You can go if you need to. Go be with her.”
I shook my head. “It wouldn’t make a difference.”
She looked confused—so I said it again, this time like I meant it.
“I can’t save her. I couldn’t when I was a kid, and I sure as hell can’t now.” I took a breath. It still felt tight in my chest. “But this? This game? I can try to win.”
She opened her mouth, probably to say something kind. But there was nothing kind about this.
I turned and walked out onto th
Camilla’s PovI wasn’t planning to come. Honestly, I thought I was above it, but something about the idea of her—sitting there, scared and helpless, still daring to think she’s special made my blood itch. “Pass the other road. I’m not in a rush.” I told my driver. I wanted the anticipation to build. I want her rotting there a little more in the darkness before I arrived. The warehouse was colder than I the last time I’d been here. The metal door groaned as I pushed it open, my heels clicked against the concrete floor as I walked. One of the idiots I paid to do this was leaning against the wall, eating chips like we were at a damn picnic.I rolled my eyes at him. “Is she awake?”He straightened, wiping his greasy fingers on his jeans. “Yeah. She’s been quiet today. Refused to eat again.”I smiled. “Good. Let her starve, pretty girls always love a diet anyways.”He snorted, moving aside so I could pass. I didn’t bother with gloves or a mask. No need to hide who I was, she already knew.
Riley’s PovMy wrists were in serious pain, the zip ties had dug into my skin so deep, I was sure I’d started bleeding, but I couldn’t see it. The mattress under me was thin, damp in some spots, and smelled like moldy gym socks. My back ached from being hunched for so long, but worse than the pain was the silence in the room.I tried shifting, twisting my wrists again, in slow careful movements that burned me but it didn’t give way, it remained tied and stuck.I didn’t know how long I’d been here. Three or four days now? The lights never changed. There was no window, just the cold concrete walls, the camera in the corner, the air conditioner and the metal door that hadn’t opened since they shoved me in.Until now.I heard the crunchy sound of footsteps, two pairs, moving slow and confident.I sat up straight, every single muscle in me tensed. The door creaked open, and two men stepped in One of them lit a cigarette with a snap of his fingers and took a long, loud drag. The other lea
Jaxs povI was halfway through reviewing the social media draft for the new campaign when Caleb burst into my office.“Nothing,” he said, waving his phone as he walked in without knocking. “I’ve called her, I’ve texted her severally and still nothing from her. I’ve even sent an email follow-up and still no reply.”“Riley?”“Yeah, Riley,” he snapped. “It’s been two days, Jax. I thought she was reliable. I mean, we were going to use her for two major rollouts this month.”I leaned back in my chair and stared at him. “She is reliable.”“Well, she’s acting like a ghost right now.”I opened my mouth to tell him she was probably just mad at me—because of the argument, because I kept coming after her even when she didn’t want me to, but something about Caleb’s frustration landed wrong. Riley wouldn’t just disappear on work, no matter how pissed she was, that was unlike her.“Maybe we shouldn’t have used her,” Caleb muttered, heading for the door. “I just thought she was the best person for t
Riley’s Pov After everything: the scandal, the kiss, the nonstop chaos, I needed this run more than I wanted to admit. My leggings clung to my damp legs, and my sports bra was sticky, but I didn’t care. The sun was sinking behind the rooftops, painting the street with a soft, hazy glow. For once, I felt like maybe I could breathe again.I glanced at my phone, still in my hand, music humming softly through one of my earbuds. The screen lit up with a reminder notification of the last text from Jax. I hadn’t replied, not because I didn’t want to, I just didn’t trust myself to say anything that wouldn’t sound like I’d already forgiven him. I wasn’t ready for that. I’d been replaying his words all day, every sentence looping in my head like a song I couldn’t get rid of.She’s out. For good. If you need me, I’m here. No more pretending.I shoved the phone back into the waistband of my leggings and took a deep breath. I needed to focus on the moment. The rhythm of my footsteps, the cool ai
Jax’s POVThe flashes from the cameras didn’t bother me, at least, not until my phone started vibrating like it was trying to crawl out of my pocket. The team and I were halfway through the shoot, they stuffed ridiculous branded gear into my view and made me pose with them with fake grins and forced chemistry, when Marcus from PR gave me a look across the set. He didn’t say anything, just tilted his chin and tapped his phone. That look meant one thing: check yours.I stepped off the white backdrop, ignoring the stylist trying to fluff my hoodie, and grabbed my phone. I unlocked it and saw twenty-seven missed notifications. Most of them were links, I clicked on the first one on the list. It played without sound. It was Riley, in a pale gold dress that caught the light like she belonged in it, Camilla stepped into the frame, looking wicked as always. Her lips curled upwards in a smirk as she said something I couldn’t hear. Riley’s facial muscles tensed and then she muttered words I co
Five hours ago…CAMILLA’S POVI woke up to the sound of my phone buzzing nonstop on the nightstand. Frustrated, I stretched my hand and reached for it. When I unlocked the phone, I was welcomed with dozens of notifications. My group chats were on fire. My mother’s name popped up, twice.“BREAKING: Jax Maddox caught kissing girlfriend backstage at gala.”Attached below it was a very clear photo of Jax holding Riley’s face like she was the damn oxygen in his lungs, his mouth were on hers while her hands fisted in his tux jacket like she needed him.I stared at the image for a full minute, my blood raging in my veins as I did.So, this is what it felt like to be replaced publicly. The two idiots didn’t even bother trying to hide it. Did they not think of what would happen when people saw him kissing his girlfriend and he abandoned his pregnant baby mama? How dumb was he? I thought he was getting better and smarter with his PR now, but apparently, he still hadn’t learned anything. I hisse
