Aiden's POV

The training fields are humming with activity as I observe Kael struggling with his initial training lunge. A serious pucker forms between his eyes as he concentrates, his little body tensing with effort and a determination all too similar to my own scrawled across his features. It's been only two weeks since their treatments started, and you can already see color in both boys' cheeks.

"Like this, Dad?" Kael inquires, shifting the way he’s standing.

"Almost." I lower myself next to him and adjust his arms softly. "Keep your center lower. Feel the ground beneath you."

He takes it again, wobbles and finds his footing. Pride fills my chest—he’s a natural, just like his mother.

On the other side of the yard, Lior sits cross legged under an oak tree, wholly absorbed in one of the oldest pack histories Marcus acquired for him. Not the same as his brother, but just as impressive in his own way.

"He's always been the deep thinker," Haylee says from behind me. She’s leaning against

Haylee's POVI press my back against the door I realize is shut, and my heart pounds in my chest as if it’s going to break my ribs. Aiden's touch haunts my skin, warm and somehow familiar in the worst of ways. I close my eyes, will my pulse to slow, to show up for duty, to re-establish the portion of the walls that guarded me, for the past five years, willing them to stand. They refuse to solidify. The twins are sleeping soundly, and Kael’s arm is thrown over his brother in a defensiveness embrace. No matter the murk between Aiden and me, our boys sit at the center of everything.I slide into the armchair by the window with the certainty I will not be sleeping. I absconded from here five years back, unhinged and betrayed by you with the truth of my pregnancy. And now I’m back, and nothing is the way I thought it would be.The way I remembered Aiden, he had been ambitious, even ruthless at times. The man on the other side of that door is not the same, he is a little more stoic, a littl

Aiden's POVThe council chamber gradually empties with elders filing out with tight nods as they leave. I stay at the head of the old oak table, eyes on Haylee as she reads the terrain maps sprawled out on the table in front of us. Her dark hair streams over her brow like a stage curtain over half-obscured and yet I see the fierce concentration in her eyes.“Your ideas for shoring up the eastern border were good,” I say to her, ending the silence that has spread between us. I haven't seen Elder Thorne look that intimidated since I fought for Alpha ranking. There is the ghost of a smile on her lips. "Some things don't change. The eastern ridge has always been easy to exploit — I’m almost shocked they hadn’t taken steps to address it already.”“Honestly, we’ve been thinking more about the northern approach,” I confess. “After we rebuilt from … well, from everything, resources were a little short.”The history we do not speak of sags between us — her leaving, Arielle’s betrayal, the pack

Haylee's POVThe morning light seeps through the thick curtains as I sit next to the still form of the sleeping twins, studying their chests as they rise and fall with each breath. Kael’s hand wraps my finger, clutching it even in sleep, and Lior splayed out with his arms extended. There are strange markings on their wrists that are faintly pulsing, a constant reminder of what we’ve endured — and what is still ahead.“They always bounce back,” Aiden says softly entering the room with a tray of steaming mugs. "Just like their mother."I take the tea offered our fingers lightly touching. My body feels the touch, the mate bond answering it, despite my best effort to shut it the hell up."Did you get any rest?" I ask, noticing the dark circles beneath his eyes.He shakes his head. "Too much to organize. The council is assembling in one hour to decide on our course of action.“Xavier will not be silent for long,” I say, and it's the fear I've been chewing on since I got the message from Ma

Aiden's POVDawn has been rising over the hills as we slog back to my patch, each step heavy with fatigue. Kael is sleeping peacefully in my arms, small body jerking occasionally with the onset of nightmares. Next to me, Haylee holds Lior, her expression set like flint despite the fatigue furrowed into her features.“The boys need some rest,” I tell him quietly. "We're almost home."Haylee nods, her eyes fixed on the trail ahead of us the whole time. “They’ve already been through so much.”The strike teams are spreading out around us, looking for stragglers of the faction that lived through the fall of the temple. But the forest is silent, the trees perhaps even holding their breath after what they’ve seen tonight."Do you believe what Arielle told us about Xavier?" Haylee says, a few minutes later, as all of us sit there in silence. “That he was after me that day out in the woods?”I want to reassure, but the jigsaw pieces click together. "It explains a lot. His timely arrival when y

Haylee's POVI'm running through the forest, my feet barely touching the earth, blood pounding in my ears. Every maternal instinct inside me is shouting at me to transform, to let my wolf loose to rip through the woods even faster, but I remind myself that I’m human. Saving my boys requires strategy, not just speed.“The northeast entrance is the most exposed,” Marcus says as our strike team gathers at the edge of our stretch of woods. “But we have a better view of the temple grounds from the west.”"How many guards?" wear silver daggers on your belt?” Aiden inquires.“Three patrols of two,” reports one scout, bursting from the shadows. “They are not trying to disguise themselves. TaliaJacoya Almost like they’re leading us to go.“It’s a trap,” I tell her, the twin bond pulsing in my chest, and it hurts. "But we have no choice."Then, Aiden looks me in the eyes. intense, serious Aiden's eyes looks into my, determined, with fire in his eyes. "We split up. Two teams. I will go with the

Aiden's POVChaos erupts in the pack house around me. Wolves pack the hallways, their voices escalating in disarray and panic, with the news: the Alpha's sons are gone.“Clear every room,” I snap to Marcus as he closes in. “Every closet, every crawl space. Then extend to the grounds."“Under way already, Alpha,” he tells me, his weathered face grim. “I’d sent teams to the perimeter, too.”I nod, struggling to keep my wolf in check— it wishes for blood. My sons. My boys. Gone. And now all I’ve got is the note I discovered in my pocket last night—the one that tells me Haylee is going to take them. The coincidence is too perfect to be accidental."Have you seen Luna Haylee?" I ask, dreading the answer.“She was combing the east wing when I left her,” Marcus says. "She seems... distraught."Of course she does. The perfect charade—the frantic mother in search of the children that she has stashed herself. It makes me sick even to think it as doubt tingles at the edges of my certainty."Let
