“Congratulations, Luna, You’re three weeks pregnant.” The doctor said and I felt my heart stop for a moment as tears of joy welled up in my eyes.
Pregnant? I’m pregnant! I really am pregnant!
My excitement knew no bounds as I felt a sensation in my guts, my stomach muscles contracted with a delightful tingling sensation.
“I—” I paused to catch my breath, my fingertips trembling as I clutched the test results in my hands, “I’m pregnant?” I asked again to be sure I’m not just hearing things.
“Yes, Luna.” The pack doctor responded and that warm delight spread through my stomach, engulfing me in its fuzzy feeling as the pleasurable quiver ran through me.
I still couldn’t believe it. It’s been three years since I got married to Alpha Aiden Fenrir of the Shadow pack, one of the strongest packs.
Three years since I became Luna of a pack that was once strange to me. I touched my stomach as a smile crept up my lips and I felt a bottomless peace within me.
“Thank you, Doctor.” I said with a bright smile, joy bubbling in my voice and I didn’t need a soothsayer to tell me that it also shone in my eyes.
The doctor nodded, writing a prescription for me and giving me strict orders to take them as prescribed. Taking the note from him, I thanked him again before walking out of his office and to the pharmacy.
Who would have thought that I, Haylee Wolf of the Ragnar pack, the most powerful pack in the world, could ever get pregnant?
Being an orphan and a single woman in my previous pack, I was deemed unfit to rule by the priest and the people of my pack.
I didn’t know what I was thinking when I took over the pack after the death of my parents, I knew damn well that a woman single-handedly ruling wasn’t entirely accepted.
They were never going to take me seriously because I had no backbone and so with the pressure from the priest and the people getting too intense, I decided to leave while my best friend acted as Luna in my place.
I arrived at the shadow pack five years ago and for the first few months I was treated like a plague, segregated everywhere and treated horribly.
Shadow pack was never nice to strangers but then Alpha Aiden came along and redeemed me of the pack’s horrible treatment.
We dated for about a year before getting married three years ago. Despite being a housewife, I made sure to pull strings behind the scenes, contributing to my husband’s success.
But, all efforts to get pregnant only came to nought and just when I was about to give up on ever getting pregnant, I felt sick and decided to see the doctor one last time before losing hope.
Aiden doesn’t know who I really am, my identity except for my first name is a mystery to him and today, I have two good news to share with him.
“Are you sure he’s worth it? You’re really going to tell Alpha Aiden of the Shadow pack that you’re the Luna of the most powerful pack in history?” My best friend back home said and I nodded happily.
“It’s gone on for too long, Scarlett, and I’m sure he’s worth it, I wouldn’t have stayed married to him for three years with him if he wasn’t worth it.” I responded and Scarlett sighed.
“I don’t have a good feeling about this but then again I never have a good feeling about the men you choose because you always manage to pick out the scums.” She said seriously although I knew she meant it as a joke.
“SCARLETT!” I whined playfully and we both bursted out laughing. I miss her, I miss my pack, I miss my people and I really can’t wait to be back.
“Good luck, Luna,” she said, respectfully bowing her head even though I’d warned her several times that she was the Luna for now and not me.
Scarlett knew when to be formal and when not to be, “Your pack is waiting for you, I’ll start the preparations and put everything in place for your arrival.” She assured me and I nodded.
Dropping the video call, I took another deep breath before getting in the car, my excitement welling up again and I just couldn’t wait to give Aiden my good news.
The drive back home started and it didn’t take long before we’re almost at the house but strangely, the more we closed in on the house, the more I felt uncomfortable.
It was as though I’d been closed up in a really tight space and turning the window down didn’t help at all.
My heart palpitated as I gasped, realizing a shiver of unknown panic and it got even worse when we finally got to the house.
“Luna, are you alright?” The driver had asked, his voice heavy with worry as his eyes looked me over but I nodded as I rubbed my temple.
“I’m fine,” I forced out even though it was absolutely clear that I wasn’t fine at all. This horrible feeling kept eating me up, causing an unknown fear to knot in my chest.
What is going on?
I made my way into the house and the pain got more intense, so intense that I felt like I was going to pass out from the pain and every fiber of my being seemed to warn me of something.
My breath caught in my throat as I felt my heart pounding in my temple and no matter how hard I tried to brush it off, I couldn’t.
Hushed sounds traveled down the hallway and my mind floundered as I made it up the stairs and towards my bedroom.
I didn’t need a priest to tell me how red my face had gotten, my cheeks burnt really hot and a sense of betrayal swept over me.
The sound got louder as I got closer to my bedroom and it wasn’t until I was a few feet away from there did I realize what was going on.
“Ah, Yes! yes! yes! Harder! Faster!” A familiar feminine voice made its way to my ears, shattering my resolve and causing me to stop abruptly in my tracks.
“Who is daddy’s good girl?” Another familiar voice asked as the sound of bed creaking seeped out of the bedroom, causing my heart to immediately drop to my stomach.
No. There’s no way it’s who I think it is. Actually, there’s no way they’re doing what I think they’re doing.
“Fuck, you’re so tight,” Aiden moaned and I could hear their bodies slapping together as my lady in waiting moaned.
Putting one foot in front of the other half in anticipation, half in dread, I stopped when I got to my bedroom door and lifted my hand to turn the knob but I couldn’t and tightened my fist instead.
The sound grew louder, the smell coming from the room pungent. I bit down hard on my lips, my fist trembling with restrained emotions as I loosened my fist and finally grabbed the knob.
“Goddess, please, it shouldn’t be what I’m thinking.” I prayed silently. My heart was beating so hard against my chest as I braced myself for what I was going to see.
‘Aiden would never cheat on me. Aiden would never cheat on me.’ I repeated the words like a mantra and I had no idea why but I felt tears already welling up in my eyes.
He loves me. He wouldn’t cheat on me, especially with my lady in waiting.
Finally turning the knob, the sight before me was so lewd and painful that I felt waves upon waves of hurt sweeping me away.
Sorrow seeped into my bones and pain radiated from my core as I watched Aiden, my husband, thrusting into Arielle, my lady in waiting, desperately.
They were both sweaty, their eyes closed as they fully immersed themselves into their vulgar ecstasy, completely unaware of my presence.
My body throbbed with anguish and I felt my heart aching and slowly breaking into a million unfixable pieces. I felt devastated, the ability to react leaving me.
I watched as they both got off the mile high, both of them reaching orgasm and I felt my stomach churn when my husband collapsed on her.
“Fuck, that was the best sex I’ve ever had,” he said, his voice filled with lust, “I’m glad I have you.” He finished and my stomach twisted.
How long until they notice me?
“I’ll always be here for you,” Arielle responded breathlessly, “I just knew that your useless wife wouldn’t be able to satisfy you.” She finished, laughing as she said that.
My mouth opened but I couldn’t find the words, my teeth gritted as I clenched my jaw, feeling a gush of emotion washing over me.
“LUNA HAYLEE!” Arielle finally noticed me, she looked shocked as jumped out of bed and covered herself with the bed covers but my husband didn’t care.
“T— This is— I was just—” She stuttered, fumbling her words, physically scared as I looked into her eyes but soon turned towards Aiden.
“What’s going on here?” I asked as if I didn’t actually see what was going on, that wasn’t the question I intended to ask but that was what left my mouth.
“What does it look like?” He retorted, there was no hint of remorse on his face and his conscience seemed awfully clear despite his betrayal.
How could he?
“Were you never taught to knock before coming into someone’s room?” He deadpanned, he was completely unrepentant, no guilt seemed to weigh on his mind whatsoever.
“Someone else’s? It’s my MATRIMONIAL BEDROOM!” I was losing my mind, I was going crazy and it was very impossible to steady my erratic pulse.
Lots of thoughts crossed my mind, I wanted to grab the vase next to me and bash it on his and Arielle’s head. The sight of them together was disgusting, haunting and—
“Matrimonial?” Aiden’s mockery jolted me out of my thoughts, “you can only refer to this bedroom as your matrimonial place when you can bear me an heir, you worthless barren!”
I felt a sharp pang in my chest when he uttered those words, he had told me he didn’t care about having a child and now he’s calling me a barren.
“You think I’m going to waste my time on a woman who hasn’t been able to conceive in three years?” He laughed.
“I never loved you, Haylee, I married you because I pitied you but you’ve proved to be absolutely useless.” He went on, his words cut deep like a knife.
“I can never spend the rest of my life with a barren.”
Haylee's POVWe all load in for the drive to where Master Elias's body was found, which somehow seems longer than an hour from Dr. Sarah's office. Aiden continues to stare at me with concern, and I can feel through our bond that he recognizes my distress, but I need to see this on my own. I have to know just how powerful Xavier really is.“You don’t need to this.” Aiden says, for the third time, as we pull onto the access road to the woods. “The scene has already been processed by the authorities. We can get their report."“I have to see it,” I tell them, firmly. “If Master Elias was killed defending me, because he knew the truth of what Xavier did, then I owe it to him to speak. The place is cordoned off for crime scene, but Aiden is an Alpha so we can enter. The local sheriff, a no-nonsense old character named Thompson, guides us to the location where the body was found.“Found him right here,” says Sheriff Thompson, pointing at a depression under the forest floor near an ancient oa
Haylee's POVThe atmosphere in Dr. Sarah’s office is so thick, you can cut it with a knife as Aiden and I take our seats across from her at the desk. Her usual composure looks shaken, and the desperation in her voice when she summoned us here still rings in my ears.Dr. Sarah addresses us after the introductions, opening a worn folder. ”What I am going to teach you would shatter everything you thought you knew about True Bonds.” "What do you mean?" I lean in, despite the wad of dread in my belly.Dr. Sarah opens the file and fans a few documents out on her desk. I've been studying True Bonds since we last spoke, swotting up on the old books and cross referencing them with new magical theory. It turns out what I've found... it's not good."Aiden's hand grasps mine and I can feel how tense he is through our connection. "Just tell us, Sarah."“There are bonds which can be artificially influenced, with the help of dark magic,” she mutters, almost inaudibly. “Since natural generation coul
Haylee's POVThe dusty old books that cover Aiden’s desktop seem like they could contain the secrets of the universe, and yet after three hours of reading, I’m starting to see double. Aiden is on the other side of me, his brow furrowed in concentration as he reads an ancient text written in what I think is Old Norse."Anything useful?" I ask, rubbing my temples."Maybe." He glances up, and I can almost feel his excitement through our link. "The writer here references True Bonds, but in the archaic language of the time. Some of the passages are giving me trouble.”I circle the desk to see over his shoulder, attempting to ignore the fact his presence is inflating my pulse rate. Since we talked earlier, the connection between us is humming louder and stronger. Every feeling, everything is heightened."What does this part say?" Here I'm pointing to a piece that seems to be somewhat more legible. His finger trails the text as he translates, quietly. “Something about … ‘two souls, one flame
Aiden's POVThe doctor touches Haylee gently as she inspects her, but I can see the worry etched in every line of her face. Haylee is on the edge of my bed, pale but awake, and I pace behind her like a caged wolf.“So I’m just crazy, and if my son is gone, there will be nothing left,” Lou Jordan replies, to which Dr. Sarah says, gently lowering her stethoscope, through “a kind of heightened parental bond.” "But it's strange how it affected you, Haylee. Usually, these links don’t lead to buildings coming physically tumbling down.”"What does that mean?" I query, my voice betraying my concern.“It means there is something else that we should be thinking about here. Something more than a typical parent-child relationship.” She looks between us. "Have anything happened to your mates' link recently?"Satisfied that she is no longer angry, I take a long sip of my beer, and watch as Haylee’s cheeks turn bright red, averting my eyes. "We... things have changed a little.""What kind of develop
Haylee's POVI stride back and forth across my room like a caged animal, my brain spinning from my absorption in the kitchen. The vision — or whatever it was — is now stuck on replay behind my eyelids. The look of joy on my face, the love in Aiden’s voice, the two angelic little kids that had both of our features. It felt so real I still remember the scent of the nursery, the echo of laughter.“Pull yourself together,” I mutter to myself. "It was the mate bond playing up. Nothing more."But even as I say that, I know I’m lying. What we had was beyond anything I've felt, even when we were at the peak of our original relationship. The bond is not just waking up, it’s changing, giving us glimpses of what could be and it should terrify me, but instead fills me with a want so fierce I find myself gasping for air. There comes a gentle rapping, and I struggle to climb out of it."Mom?" There is the muffled sound of Lior’s voice through the door. "Can I come in?""Of course, baby."He slips i
Aiden's POVThe first thing to hit me is warmth. Not the hard, clinical heat of pack meetings or training sessions, but something soft and familiar that burrows deep into my chest and squeezes. The second thing I notice is the rise and fall and rise again of breath that isn’t mine; the weight of a body curled into position next to me, familiar, as though it should be there.I flutter my eyes open to see Haylee’s dark hair spread across my chest and her face serene in sleep. Her arm is thrown carelessly across my heart and I think she might be able to feel it how it hiccups Beat at the sight of her. Five years. It’s five years since I woke up to her sleeping in my arms, and the mate bond buzzes contently between us, like it’s found its right place in the world.I don't dare move. This moment feels stolen, is fragile as spun glass. One false breath, and she’ll wake up, recall who I am and what I did and the walls will come crashing back down. So I mentally catalog each, instead — how he
