Haylee had finally found happiness. After struggling to conceive, she was overjoyed to learn she was pregnant with her mate's child. But when she got home to share the good news with the man she gave everything to, she walks into a nightmare.

“Congratulations, Luna, You’re three weeks pregnant.” The doctor said and I felt my heart stop for a moment as tears of joy welled up in my eyes.
Pregnant? I’m pregnant! I really am pregnant!
My excitement knew no bounds as I felt a sensation in my guts, my stomach muscles contracted with a delightful tingling sensation.
“I—” I paused to catch my breath, my fingertips trembling as I clutched the test results in my hands, “I’m pregnant?” I asked again to be sure I’m not just hearing things.
“Yes, Luna.” The pack doctor responded and that warm delight spread through my stomach, engulfing me in its fuzzy feeling as the pleasurable quiver ran through me.
I still couldn’t believe it. It’s been three years since I got married to Alpha Aiden Fenrir of the Shadow pack, one of the strongest packs.
Three years since I became Luna of a pack that was once strange to me. I touched my stomach as a smile crept up my lips and I felt a bottomless peace within me.
“Thank you, Doctor.” I said with a bright smile, joy bubbling in my voice and I didn’t need a soothsayer to tell me that it also shone in my eyes.
The doctor nodded, writing a prescription for me and giving me strict orders to take them as prescribed. Taking the note from him, I thanked him again before walking out of his office and to the pharmacy.
Who would have thought that I, Haylee Wolf of the Ragnar pack, the most powerful pack in the world, could ever get pregnant?
Being an orphan and a single woman in my previous pack, I was deemed unfit to rule by the priest and the people of my pack.
I didn’t know what I was thinking when I took over the pack after the death of my parents, I knew damn well that a woman single-handedly ruling wasn’t entirely accepted.
They were never going to take me seriously because I had no backbone and so with the pressure from the priest and the people getting too intense, I decided to leave while my best friend acted as Luna in my place.
I arrived at the shadow pack five years ago and for the first few months I was treated like a plague, segregated everywhere and treated horribly.
Shadow pack was never nice to strangers but then Alpha Aiden came along and redeemed me of the pack’s horrible treatment.
We dated for about a year before getting married three years ago. Despite being a housewife, I made sure to pull strings behind the scenes, contributing to my husband’s success.
But, all efforts to get pregnant only came to nought and just when I was about to give up on ever getting pregnant, I felt sick and decided to see the doctor one last time before losing hope.
Aiden doesn’t know who I really am, my identity except for my first name is a mystery to him and today, I have two good news to share with him.
“Are you sure he’s worth it? You’re really going to tell Alpha Aiden of the Shadow pack that you’re the Luna of the most powerful pack in history?” My best friend back home said and I nodded happily.
“It’s gone on for too long, Scarlett, and I’m sure he’s worth it, I wouldn’t have stayed married to him for three years with him if he wasn’t worth it.” I responded and Scarlett sighed.
“I don’t have a good feeling about this but then again I never have a good feeling about the men you choose because you always manage to pick out the scums.” She said seriously although I knew she meant it as a joke.
“SCARLETT!” I whined playfully and we both bursted out laughing. I miss her, I miss my pack, I miss my people and I really can’t wait to be back.
“Good luck, Luna,” she said, respectfully bowing her head even though I’d warned her several times that she was the Luna for now and not me.
Scarlett knew when to be formal and when not to be, “Your pack is waiting for you, I’ll start the preparations and put everything in place for your arrival.” She assured me and I nodded.
Dropping the video call, I took another deep breath before getting in the car, my excitement welling up again and I just couldn’t wait to give Aiden my good news.
The drive back home started and it didn’t take long before we’re almost at the house but strangely, the more we closed in on the house, the more I felt uncomfortable.
It was as though I’d been closed up in a really tight space and turning the window down didn’t help at all.
My heart palpitated as I gasped, realizing a shiver of unknown panic and it got even worse when we finally got to the house.
“Luna, are you alright?” The driver had asked, his voice heavy with worry as his eyes looked me over but I nodded as I rubbed my temple.
“I’m fine,” I forced out even though it was absolutely clear that I wasn’t fine at all. This horrible feeling kept eating me up, causing an unknown fear to knot in my chest.
What is going on?
I made my way into the house and the pain got more intense, so intense that I felt like I was going to pass out from the pain and every fiber of my being seemed to warn me of something.
My breath caught in my throat as I felt my heart pounding in my temple and no matter how hard I tried to brush it off, I couldn’t.
Hushed sounds traveled down the hallway and my mind floundered as I made it up the stairs and towards my bedroom.
I didn’t need a priest to tell me how red my face had gotten, my cheeks burnt really hot and a sense of betrayal swept over me.
The sound got louder as I got closer to my bedroom and it wasn’t until I was a few feet away from there did I realize what was going on.
“Ah, Yes! yes! yes! Harder! Faster!” A familiar feminine voice made its way to my ears, shattering my resolve and causing me to stop abruptly in my tracks.
“Who is daddy’s good girl?” Another familiar voice asked as the sound of bed creaking seeped out of the bedroom, causing my heart to immediately drop to my stomach.
No. There’s no way it’s who I think it is. Actually, there’s no way they’re doing what I think they’re doing.
“Fuck, you’re so tight,” Aiden moaned and I could hear their bodies slapping together as my lady in waiting moaned.
Putting one foot in front of the other half in anticipation, half in dread, I stopped when I got to my bedroom door and lifted my hand to turn the knob but I couldn’t and tightened my fist instead.
The sound grew louder, the smell coming from the room pungent. I bit down hard on my lips, my fist trembling with restrained emotions as I loosened my fist and finally grabbed the knob.
“Goddess, please, it shouldn’t be what I’m thinking.” I prayed silently. My heart was beating so hard against my chest as I braced myself for what I was going to see.
‘Aiden would never cheat on me. Aiden would never cheat on me.’ I repeated the words like a mantra and I had no idea why but I felt tears already welling up in my eyes.
He loves me. He wouldn’t cheat on me, especially with my lady in waiting.
Finally turning the knob, the sight before me was so lewd and painful that I felt waves upon waves of hurt sweeping me away.
Sorrow seeped into my bones and pain radiated from my core as I watched Aiden, my husband, thrusting into Arielle, my lady in waiting, desperately.
They were both sweaty, their eyes closed as they fully immersed themselves into their vulgar ecstasy, completely unaware of my presence.
My body throbbed with anguish and I felt my heart aching and slowly breaking into a million unfixable pieces. I felt devastated, the ability to react leaving me.
I watched as they both got off the mile high, both of them reaching orgasm and I felt my stomach churn when my husband collapsed on her.
“Fuck, that was the best sex I’ve ever had,” he said, his voice filled with lust, “I’m glad I have you.” He finished and my stomach twisted.
How long until they notice me?
“I’ll always be here for you,” Arielle responded breathlessly, “I just knew that your useless wife wouldn’t be able to satisfy you.” She finished, laughing as she said that.
My mouth opened but I couldn’t find the words, my teeth gritted as I clenched my jaw, feeling a gush of emotion washing over me.
“LUNA HAYLEE!” Arielle finally noticed me, she looked shocked as jumped out of bed and covered herself with the bed covers but my husband didn’t care.
“T— This is— I was just—” She stuttered, fumbling her words, physically scared as I looked into her eyes but soon turned towards Aiden.
“What’s going on here?” I asked as if I didn’t actually see what was going on, that wasn’t the question I intended to ask but that was what left my mouth.
“What does it look like?” He retorted, there was no hint of remorse on his face and his conscience seemed awfully clear despite his betrayal.
How could he?
“Were you never taught to knock before coming into someone’s room?” He deadpanned, he was completely unrepentant, no guilt seemed to weigh on his mind whatsoever.
“Someone else’s? It’s my MATRIMONIAL BEDROOM!” I was losing my mind, I was going crazy and it was very impossible to steady my erratic pulse.
Lots of thoughts crossed my mind, I wanted to grab the vase next to me and bash it on his and Arielle’s head. The sight of them together was disgusting, haunting and—
“Matrimonial?” Aiden’s mockery jolted me out of my thoughts, “you can only refer to this bedroom as your matrimonial place when you can bear me an heir, you worthless barren!”
I felt a sharp pang in my chest when he uttered those words, he had told me he didn’t care about having a child and now he’s calling me a barren.
“You think I’m going to waste my time on a woman who hasn’t been able to conceive in three years?” He laughed.
“I never loved you, Haylee, I married you because I pitied you but you’ve proved to be absolutely useless.” He went on, his words cut deep like a knife.
“I can never spend the rest of my life with a barren.”
Haylee's POVI gaze at the weird spiral etching on Lior’s wrist and panic scratches at my throat. My fingertips sear as they rest on my son’s skin, his heat unnatural for his small frame."What is this?" I look between Aiden and Elara. "Who would mark my child?"While she scours through her medical bag, I look over at Aiden and see that his expression is now rigid with a mixture of controlled fury. "Xavier did this, right?"“The evidence leads that way,” he says, whispering to avoid waking the twins. “The timing, the secrecy, this being written directly after he brought in a ‘specialist’. ""But why?" I push, arguing with myself, trying to make the man I’ve known for years fit with someone who could make a conscious decision to hurt a child — my child. "What does he have to gain from keeping Lior sicker?"Aiden does not get a chance to reply before Elara has a tiny gasp. She holds an old leather-bound book, its pages turned yellow with age. “Here,” she says, pointing at a faded pictur
Aiden's POVI see the darkness in Haylee's eyes deepen when she hangs up from Xavier. Her hands are shaking a little, but she looks determined, that stubborn set to her jaw that I’ve always admired — even when that stubbornness was against me.“He’s lying,” I say, and my voice is so sure that it even surprises me. "The timing is too perfect."Haylee glances up, her eyes more piercing. "What do you mean?""Think about it. Lior suddenly has new complaints. An enigmatic medic sneaks up behind you. Then followed a handy raid on the frontier demanding an immediate return of you? I move in closer, wary not to press her. “It’s manipulation, pure and simple.”“You don’t know Xavier,” she replies, but she still sounds unsure."I know men who crave power." My mind flits to my own father, his cutthroat climb to Alpha. “And I know what they are capable of when they feel threatened.”Conflict fills every step as Haylee paces back and forth in the cramped living room. “But why would he be spooked?
Haylee's POVAIden talking to the healer, and next thing I know I'm pulling myself together. The bond scar pulses under my sweater, after a sleep that spanned years. My wolfpaces impatiently under my skin, begging me for something I can't — won't — give him.“Elara says they’re stable,” Aiden shares with him before hanging up. “No change so far, but she wasn’t expecting immediate results.”Relief washes through me. "When's the next treatment?"“Dawn,” he says, glancing at his watch. "About five hours from now. We should try to rest."I could not even say that I imagined lying down again in my bed, where I was too uncomfortably conscious of the sensation of falling, nor yet to my desk, from which horsehair post a spectral persuasion of cascading seemed to dangle as before my eyes, nor yet to the floor, which I had only just acquired the habit of using to rest my head and brush against sheets for something that breathed differently from myself about my scalp. "I'll take the couch.""Hay
Haylee's POVI wake and I am very warm, surrounded by a scent that is like a cocoon. There’s one brief, disorienting moment when time dissolves, and I am in our bedroom at the pack house, six years and a lifetime ago. Then the presence smashes into me. I'm in Aiden's cabin. In his bed. And the warmth beside me...I sit up straight, my heart slamming in my chest. Aiden is asleep on top of the covers, fully dressed with a respectful gap between us that somehow feels more intimate than if he’d been pressed up against me."What are you doing?" “Well, I asked him to stay,” I whisper. He stirs at the sound of my voice, blinks open his eyes. Realization crosses his face, and then worry.“You were having bad dreams,” he says, voice thick with sleep. "You asked me to stay."Heat rises to my cheeks. "I didn't mean in my bed.""That's for your bed," he corrects, sitting up and raking a hand through his sleep-ruffled hair. “And you apparently slept better.”I wish to argue, to deny his comfort, b
Aiden's POVThe word lingers in the space between us as we finish the blend. Once we have the serum ready, it's time for the last part of this phase—charging it up with our combined energy.“We need to hold the container:” I say, quoting from Elara's work. "And let’s concentrate our thoughts on healing our sons.”Haylee places her hands on the glass vessel, and I do the same beside hers, our fingers almost touching. (My son and I are almost touching it and the contents of the serum inside are gently glowing.“This is where we focus,” I mutter, eyes closing.I focus on the vision of the twins, their little faces serene in sleep, their bodies strong and whole. Next to me, I feel Haylee doing the same, her energy warm, familiar. Over time, our disparate interests converge, and we bolster each other. It starts to warm in our hands.“It’s working,” Haylee whispers.I open my eyes to the serum, not only glowing, but pulsating with our mutual focus. Lighting her face, Haylee looks absolutely
Aiden's POVMy cabin is tucked away at the edge of my land in a cluster of ancient pine trees, just a little distance from the pack house so I can get some fucking peace and quiet but close enough that can easily respond to any kind of emergency. The morning sun pours through the trees and dapples the wooden porch with the shadows of branches. Inside, I take one last glance around the main room, making sure I’ve set up everything Elara told me to: medical equipment spread out on the heavy oak table, refrigerator filled with what we’ll need to eat to keep our energy up, research papers piled neatly at the side of two comfortable chairs.I’ve left nothing to chance, but anxiety roils in my gut. Three days alone with Haylee. Three days to cook up a cure to save our sons. Three days that could change everything — or solidify that some bridges stay permanently burned.Outside, a vehicle pulls up, the tires crunching the gravel path. I am listening closely and there is a muffled sound of a
