Chapter 2

Author: Yamano Fisher
Winnie, however, was still glaring coldly at me. "Words are cheap—if you don't sign it, you're not getting any of the answers. Don't say I didn't warn you…"

"Yeah, sure," I replied, nodding. "But I'll pass."

Winnie was stumped, not expecting that I'd give up so easily.

Gritting her teeth, she hollered, "Everyone heard her! She passed! When the whole class gets into Croma, let's hope she won't cry begging after she flunks!"

"Don't worry about her, Winnie," Hal scoffed, setting up his facial recognition while waving her off dismissively. "She's as stiff as a board, and she'll get a community college degree at best."

In under ten minutes, every classmate had registered for that app except me.

Standing akimbo like a queen, Winnie looked at everyone as she said, "Now, I'll start sending the answers into a new chat group. Memorize everything as soon as you can—especially the formula for important questions."

The room was at once filled with chants as everyone began memorizing their answers, while I put on earbuds and studied on my own.

During lunch, I had just taken my seat when Winnie and several other girls sat opposite me.

"You actually still have an appetite?" Winnie asked, tapping her fork loudly on her tray. "Your pathetic pride is worthless compared to a million bucks, don't you get it?"

I never looked up as I started eating.

"Oh, I get it—you're jealous." Winnie leaned closed to keep whispering tauntingly, "Jealous that I got my hands on such treasure, while you have to keep reading your silly books?"

"You worry too much," I said as I kept eating. "I just don't think anything comes for free in this world."

"You ignoramus!" Winnie's lackey, Vera Lowe, snapped right then, smacking the table. "Winnie's family is simply that well-connected. What would bottom feeders like you know?"

I looked up at her. "Then why isn't she using it for herself and insisting on sharing it with the whole class?"

Vera was left stumped right then.

Winnie also cringed uncomfortably, but that reaction was soon gone. "I brought everyone along for the ride because I am a big picture person. You wouldn't get it."

"No, I wouldn't," I replied, wiping my lips with a tissue. "I just hope that contract is the real deal."

As I picked up my food tray and stood up, Winnie growled coldly behind me, "Just you wait, Laura. You'll be crying on your knees when the results are out."

We had self-study in the afternoon, but the vibe in the room simply felt different.

No one was studying and were instead writing cheat sheets.

Hal was even organizing the whole thing.

"Multiple choice on the erasers, written questions in the shoes. For essays… just memorize the key points."

I sat in a corner, watching as they planned everything rowdily like a bazaar.

There was less than twenty-four hours left before our SAT, but everyone was caught in a completely frenzied state.

When the school bell rang mercifully, I packed my bag, ready to leave… only to see both classroom doors suddenly slamming shut.

Hal and several boys stood there, with Hal growling, "You're not leaving, Laura."

I held his gaze and demanded, "What?"

"Winnie told us you've been acting weird the whole day," Hal said as he closed in, his glare hostile. "For the sake of the class, hand over your phone."

The class was eerily silent as every pair of eyes were suddenly glaring fixedly on me, and I was all too familiar with that look.

That was the look they had in their eyes when they pushed me off the roof.

"My phone?" I laughed. "What gives you the right?"

"Right?! When you're a time bomb for all of us?!" Vera bellowed as she rushed up at me, pointing and screaming, "What if you recorded our conversation and ratted us out?! Our entire class' future would be destroyed!"

I smiled and nodded. "Exactly! I bet you won't!"Pulling out a sheet of paper from my pocket, I explained, "After all, you've already booked a flight that will take you straight to another continent. Even your luggage has been packed and stored in an airport locker!"Winnie's expression stiffened—my words were simply piercing even if I wasn't being loud.At the same time, I continued, "You drew everyone to this building and provoked them, so that they would call the cops. Then you're suddenly playing the victim in front of the cops and threatening to jump as a distraction, after which you'd slip away and dash straight to the airport."After all, you'd get a thirty percent commission from that fraud ring. That's well over a six-figure sum, and you can float abroad for a while… Or am I wrong, Winnie?"Winnie cringed, her lips turning pale as she couldn't manage a word. And hearing what I had to say, the rest of the class freaked out again."What?! She was still lying to us?!""Ar

The class went amok as they swarmed Winnie maniacally, shoving her to the floor.Winnie's screams hence echoed on the roof, along with the audible slaps, kicks, and ripping of clothes."Help! Somebody help! They're trying to kill me!" She kept screaming as she fought back, but there was nothing she could do.The girls who usually couldn't even open a water bottle for their lives were especially vicious, as they were the ones who had bet their futures on high-interest loans.Hal himself stamped his foot on Winnie's hand, shoving it down while snapping, "You were going to study abroad, was it?! You won't even make it to the hospital!""Please, I'm sorry!" Winnie cried in pain through snot and tears. "You can have your money back! I'll get you a refund!""Refund, my foot! I'm banned from taking the SAT for three years! Three years!" Hal bellowed hysterically.I quietly stayed at a safe distance, letting them fight. In my last life, it was me whom they were clobbering, cursing, a

It was the worst excuse anyone had ever heard, but sanity was also too much to ask for from an angry, desperate mob.Hal dropped Winnie right then as he turned and advanced on me, his glare bloodshot. "It was you, Laura?!"The mob promptly cleared a path for him, their eyes resentful and fixed on me.Just like in my past life.It was here, on this rooftop, where they bought into Winnie's nonsensical accusation before she jumped. If she was going to suffer, then she refused to suffer alone!"I knew a bum like you can't abide with us winning!" "You ruined our future! Now die!"But even as the boys closed in on me while Winnie hid behind them with a venomous smile, I stood where I was without moving an inch.Holding Hal's gaze, I then burst out laughing. "Magnetic field disruption? Rat you out? Oh, Hal… You've really lost your mind because you can't make it to Croma, huh?""What are you talking about?!" Hal bellowed, reaching out to grab my collar.I swiftly whipped out a Blue

[What's going on?! Why can't I find my score?][Me too! And the wifi connection says that everything's normal!][Can you access it, Hal?][No, I've got nothing too!]There was chaos in the chat group as hundreds of messages were sent in a single minute, with Winnie being pinged repeatedly.[What's going on, Winnie? Did the system glitch or something?][Winnie, I called the admissions office but it's busy!]It took at least thirty minutes before Winnie finally responded.[Calm down, everyone. It takes time for the system to finalize the results, so trust me, everything is going to be fine.]However, her assurance was meaningless because ten minutes later, Hal sent another screenshot of an internal notice circulating within the education department. It clearly read: 'Suspected plagiarized answers in the SAT, guilty examinees' scores to be deemed forfeit and examinees suspended from retaking the SAT for three years.'The group turned deathly silent, and it was only two minutes

I took the SAT as one normally would, and though some questions were difficult, it wasn't impossible.I'd also looked into the police report after they investigated the so-called AI prediction app that Winnie was offering. It was no AI—just a leaked exam paper that had been purchased and slapdash answers provided by another test taker. They were clearly short on time, and there were obvious mistakes in the math formula and even literature interpretation. As soon as the examiners noticed the similarities, they would determine that those were plagiarized by a hundred percent.Nonetheless, the test was over with a deafening ring of the school bell.Hal then sent a text in the class group chat: [Let's hit the karaoke bar! Winnie's paying!]I saw the text but simply tapped out as I headed home for a good night's sleep instead.Over the next seven days, my classmates were losing their minds, and the same messages flooded the class group chat every day.[I checked the answers. It's at

With that, the cheat sheet rolled quietly down my palm and into Vera's chest pocket."Next!" a proctor barked just then.I went up, spreading my hands. The only beeps that could be heard was when the scanner passed my belt buckle. Then, the proctor said, "Pencil pouch."I calmly opened it, revealing just two pencils, an eraser, and a calculator.Clean.Winnie's face dropped, her eyes fixed on my pencil case in disbelief."Go in," the proctor said, beckoning.I nodded, picked up my pencil case, and turned to look at Winnie. She was glaring at me viciously, while Vera was trembling nervously in front of her."Next!" the proctor barked again.Vera started forward with a clumsy gait.Beep! Beep! Beep! This time, the scanner blared loudly as it reached Vera's pocket. The proctor scowled right then. "What's in your pocket?! Take it out."Vera's face was pale. "Nothing… Just a pack of tissues…""Take it out," the proctor repeated, sterner this time.Trembling, Vera reached i
